      Are these options, if you stay longer than around 8days really cheaper than a Monats-GA for 440.- CHF? I know its a bit more difficult to get one probably but i guess its still cheaper in many instaces.

    I am planning a trip to Switzerland for April, 23 days touring 6 cities, 3 panoramic trains and climbing as many mountains as I have nearby. I watched over 100 videos that made me change courses several times. Your videos from different places, how to go, how much to pay, etc. are incredible, thank you. I do not know how I did not find them before. I am almost 77 years old, I hope to return to Argentina whole and alive :), thanks, thanks.

    I wish I had this video 3 months back! It is so valuable for swiss travelers! Would recommend for anyone who travels to swiss. I heard mostly about swiss travel pass but knew others passes exist. I tried to get this info from the corresponding websites but it was difficult. Then I arrived in swiss thinking I will figure it out there. The pass options were truly overwhelming and did the full research which you have in video thereby wasting half day in Swiss just for this. Since my itinerary was flexible but limited to three days in the region and Jungfrau was a must, we decided to get swiss haf fare card for one year with top of europe pass. I would recommend to buy these two if one plans multiple trips to swiss in a year and one of the trips itinerary is restricted to 3 days in interlaken area with Jungfrau. We visited all the places where the top of europe pass was applicable. Bernie's pass is amazing but the area is impossible to cover/ utilize its fully value in three days. Unfortunately its not well advertised. If not for Jungfrau and my duration I would have gone for Bernie's Oberland pass. Also for us from Germany, it was a no brainer to buy one month half fare card as we will plan few more trips to swiss and for extra 65 euros we get one year validity. Half fare one year card can be applied online too by uploading passport and we got a temporary digital half fare card and later the cards were mailed to us to Germany. For our next trips we are planning the swiss super saver day passes 3 months beforehand on top of our 1 year half fare card for travel 😀.

    Hi guys. Great video. If you're on a budget and arriving at Basel you can also buy the train ticket from German Railwals. Buy the ticket from Freiburg to your destination in Switzerland and it can be significantly cheaper than buying vis SBB. Also, SBB offer the saver day pass. Book 2 months in advance and you can get the day pass coving all the main SBB routes (not mountain railways) from chf29. I always get this pass on my arrival day as it covers you if your flight is delayed and you miss your connection.

    • @AplinsintheAlps
      @AplinsintheAlps  2 года назад +1

      Hi Barry, these are great tips! We've never flown into Basel, so we'll be excited to try the German Railways ticket in the future!
      We have used the saver day passes and found those to be good options for us at certain times. Although, we've often found we get a better deal going to the airport (when we'll be flying out of Switzerland) by booking a saver ticket in advance instead of the day pass. But I love the Day pass option for arrival days (since you never know if you'll be delayed and can benefit from the flexibility!)
      We appreciate you watching and commenting!

    Well done! To the first timer the information can seem overwhelming, but just taking one’s time with this video and using the download is very helpful. I’ve traveled to Switzerland 8 times over the last decade and as I tend to go all over and like to make spur of the minute decisions on destinations depending on the weather I’m a big Swiss Travel Pass fan, especially when one considers the convenience of hopping on anytime without having to purchase a ticket beforehand. BUT, the advent of the SBB mobile app in recent years does make that half fare card a game changer if you’re comfortable maneuvering that. Will definitely consider that for future trips. I will note that in July and December of 2021 there was a 25% off sale for the STP, but I hadn’t seen that since 2013, so it was likely an effort to jumpstart travel after the shutdown. (It pays to stalk some good Swiss travel websites). Thanks for a great video!

      Laura, thanks for taking the time to watch our video, download our guide, and share your thoughts here! You’re absolutely right that this info is a lot to digest, especially for beginners! But we noticed that there wasn’t any info out there for beginners, ao hopefully this is a step in that direction! Also, we love you tip about 25% off the STP 😍That’s a huge savings! Have you used the SBB app? If so, what do you think about it?

    • @mountainlover830
      @mountainlover830 2 года назад +3

      @@AplinsintheAlps I've not used it to buy tickets as I've always used the STP. I've only used it to check schedules. For what I've needed it's a great tool. To be honest, until the last three trips, I've travelled on the cheap without getting a SIM card, only using the free wifi at the hotels. That changed though, when my hubby kept asking me questions while on the train about an upcoming connection. I told him if he wanted the info we were going to have to fork over the "dough" (money) to access it. 40chf well spent. Happy hubby, happy wife ;) It was time we joined the 21st century anyway!

    Pretty detailed video guys, thanks for uploading it. I will be travelling to Interlaken last week of July and will be staying in the region for 4 days, during this stay I also plan to visit neighboring cities in the region like Lucerne, Bern and Thun apart from the famous Jungfrau region. So I believe the "Bernese Oberland Pass" should be good option for this as I believe it would include all my travels including boat trips to Thun. Quick question : I also plan to club this pass with the "half fare card" which I believe will help in not only getting discount rates for the "Bernese Oberland Pass" but also to Jungfraujoch as I believe it doesn't cover in the "Bernese Oberland Pass", plus I will be flying into Zurich and travelling to Interlaken via train, where the half fare card can be of help ! Do you guys think this is good option? Also, how should I go about buying the travel pass? should I get the half fare card 1st and then buy the "Bernese Oberland Pass"? and can this all be done via the SBB travel app? thanks again for the video 🙂

    • @AplinsintheAlps
      @AplinsintheAlps  2 года назад +7

      Hi Shantanu! Thanks for the great questions! In this case, we absolutely agree that the Half Fare Card + Berner Oberland Pass would be a great option. You will definitely save more money with the HF Card than you spend on it!
      You first buy the HF Card, and then you buy the BO Pass so you can get the discount. Both can be purchased online in advance, or in the train station when you arrive. We included links for purchasing both in our related blog post: www.aplinsinthealps.com/the-ultimate-swiss-rail-pass-guide/

We will be travelling to Switzerland the first week of December and most train passes are only available until end of Oct/Nov. Is there a winter travel pass? Or will the Swiss half fare card be our only choice?

      Great question Dave! The Swiss Travel Pass and Swiss Half Fare Card can all be used year round. Last year, there was a winter pass similar to the Top of Europe pass (www.jungfrau.ch/en-gb/corona-pass-winter/) so hopefully they'll provide that option again. Hope this helps!

    Hi, what a great video, but I'm still a bit confused with all the options in our situation.
    we are with 5: 2 adults, 1 19year old, and 2 kids between 6 -16. We are staying in Wengen for 14 days. We like to do everything in the Jungfrau region, this includes the jungfraujoch and schilthorn. besides that we like to go 1 day to bern and maybe see some more places outside the jungfrau region but all in Berner Oberland region.
    So I was thinking to buy 3 half fare cards and 3 Berner Oberland region passes + 2 for the younger kids. But is that one for the younger kids necessary, or do they travel for free with us if I get the swiss family card?

    • @AplinsintheAlps
      @AplinsintheAlps  2 года назад +1

      Hi Jurgen, great question! If you ask for the Swiss Family Card, the two kids under 16 will be fully covered. You won't need to buy a Half Fare Card OR a Berner Oberland Pass for them!
      They'll ride free with you everywhere, with only two exceptions: the last segment of the Jungfraujoch and the Schilthorn. You'll still need to pay some money for their rides there. Last time I checked, 42.80 francs for the roundtrip between Mürren and the Schilthorn, and 25 francs for the roundtrip between Eigergletscher and Jungfraujoch (confirm that with the rail office though!)
      Kids under 6 always ride for free. Hope this helps!

    • @manoni75
      @manoni75 2 года назад +1

      For the younger kids the Bo card is only 30 CHF, so I would think the purchase of a half fare card is not necessary for them, nor the purchase of a Swiss family card when you stay mainly in the Berner Oberland region.

    • @AplinsintheAlps
      @AplinsintheAlps  2 года назад +1

      The Swiss family card is free if you hold a half fare card or Swiss travel card, so it’s a no-brainer for parents who will be purchasing one of those passes. We also discovered that anyone who plans to buy a regional pass and will be flying to/from Switzerland will actually save money if they buy it in addition to their regional pass!!

    • @AplinsintheAlps
      @AplinsintheAlps  2 года назад +1

      But to clarify, kids under 16 do not need a half fare card (in fact that product is not sold to children). And with the Swiss family card their journeys will be free so they don’t need the kids Berner pass either!

      Spring can be hit or miss-this year was really warm, but last year was really cold. If you want to hike above 2000 meters, you probably need to wait until late June to be safe (and some of the mountain railways and gondolas don't run until late May or June, so you'll want to check those schedules). But spring is absolutely beautiful for waterfalls, seeing more snow in the mountains, and less tourists!

    As a first time visitor in Switzerland, I was overwhelmed by all the travel passes, I went the safe route and just purchased the swiss travel pass. It was a good experience, literally you can hop on/hop off in different buses/train/tram/boat (of course, take note of the exemptions and additional passes to the main tourist spots) and we really just focused on the jungfrau region and zurich. Maybe the next time we visit, we'll try the other passes, check which can save us more money.

    • @mm-cm6kc
      @mm-cm6kc Год назад +1

      @@edgarascernikas2238 i purchased top of europe and grindelwald first tickets too. I think with the swiss travel pass, you can only use it up to one end but to go to the top parts, you need to buy the tickets for those. For example, we stayed in Murren. Up until Murren, the pass works, but I have to purchase another set of ticket to go to the top (which I think is Schilltorn). You might also get discounts if you first buy the swiss travel pass.

    This is the best video I have seen on the Swiss travel passes but we are still unsure. We have a rather complicated itinerary. We were thinking of getting the Swiss Rail Pass but now we wonder if the Half Fare Card would be better. We are planning a 13 night trip to Switzerland from USA flying into Geneva and out of Zurich using public transportation only while there. Looking to take the Golden Pass from Montreux as far as we can heading to Wengen. We are staying in Wengen for 5 nights going to Jungfraujoch and Schilthorn several times due to going all the way up once (weather permitting) and part way up to hike down several times. We leave Wengen and head to Zermatt for 3 nights. Naturally we want to take the Gornegrat while there. Also planning to take Glacier Express from Zermatt to Chur for 1 night. Finally we will take the train to Lucerne for 2 nights and then on to the Zurich airport. Buying the Swiss Rail Pass doesn't get us (retired couple) all of those places, so is it worth it to buy the Berner Oberland Regional Pass as well? Or should we purchase the Half Fare Card instead of the Swiss Rail Pass? Your advice would be really appreciated!

    • @AplinsintheAlps
      @AplinsintheAlps  Год назад

      This is a great question, and for sure a fairly complicated itinerary!
      Here's what we would likely do (but it's always hard to say without knowing everywhere you plan to visit):
      With plans to take Glacier Express and Golden Pass, as well as the length of your trip, the 15-day Swiss Travel Pass really might work well for you. You'll still have to pay quite a bit, though, for the trip to Jungfraujoch-but it will save you a ton on those long distance trains.
      So there's not a perfect answer. If you like the convenience of being covered by a pass most of the time, go with the 15-day STP. It will still provide a discount on the lifts it doesn't fully cover. And if you decide to ride lots of lifts in the Jungfrau region, you could consider adding a 3-day Top of Europe pass (at a reduced price).
      If you're all about budget and don't mind the inconvenience of buying tickets, a half fare card + 5-day Top of Europe Pass would work well. You could also be strategic with buying Saver Day Passes in advance for the days you plan to ride longer distance scenic trains. But this will require you to be quite a bit more hands on.
      Wish we could give you an easy answer!

The downside is it won't give you much of a discount on the Jungfraujoch. But depending on how important it is to you to go there, you can still have a great trip while skipping it. There really are so many incredible things to see here in Switzerland!

      My wife and I are planning to go there next March. Still deciding how many days to stay there. Fullt share your view that passes may not be the best option. But with a half fare card and the booking app from SBB is it possible to load two half fare cards onto one cellphone?
