  • I've been feeding a pair of Rainbow Lorikeets for the past 12 months on my balcony. Recently they brought their new born with them to show them where to get a free feed. All of a sudden word got out there was free food at mine and in the past 5 days a flock of them have arrived. There are now well over 30 of them!

Rainbow lorikeets give me real joy everyday in Sydney. They come to balcony by the harbor, they are so affectionate and gentle, they come to my window and “talk “to me when hungry and im still asleep. I give them Harmony powdered food moistened with water and they love it! They know “ couple power”. They come together, fly away together, eat together, “ kiss”, actually preening, one will not eat without the other. They are better than humans. Thanks for sharing the lengthy video!

I have a beautiful boy named maveric he is the funniest bird I’ve ever had the pleasure to bond with I can’t stop laughing when he is in a playful mood (98% of each day) he chases my hand loves to run under the covers and pop his head in and out he is like a dog. They remind me so much of dinosaurs. Especially rainbow lorikeets.

Try adding some fresh fruits: apple slices, banana grapes, etc.. anything that is iron-free. Corn, sweet potato, peas, carrots, to name a few iron-free veggies.

All good. Just a quick heads up. Rainbow Lorikkeets I think are better eating certain fruits. Check out information on feeding them just to confirm this, but I think fruits and stuff like that are better for them instead of seeds. Thanks for posting though.

If you cant find nectar mix fruit puree or puréed baby fruits (apples, pears, mangoes, carrots, even mashed squash,NO citrus or bananas ) , add a little honey and mix with a little dry baby food and water to make it the consistency of yogurt. No Seed. Lorrir diet: www.australianwildlife.com.au/Rainbow_Lorikeet.html
pollen is a rich source of protein; major component of the diet
nectar, blossoms mainly from Myrtaceae, Proteacea, Xanthoroaceae
fruits, berries, seeds, occasionally insects (beetles, wasps, thrips, ants, weevils) and larvae (fly maggots, weevil larvae, moth larvae)
also apples, pears, mangos - can cause damage to orchards
also maize and sorghum crops where they feed on the unripe 'milky' grain
Lorries are omnivores, and a few sunflower seeds is not going to hurt them.

There is a lot of disturbing information in these comments. I understand people enjoying these birds in their back yards and also wanting to feed them a bit. Seed seems a simple means of attracting and feeding them but with Lorikeets you aren't doing them any favors. They are nectar and fruit eaters primarily but in the course of gathering nectar and fruit they do ingest a reasonable number of insects unlucky enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. The absolute best you can do for them is to talk to your local garden nurseries in your area and plant whatever attracts these birds. If that isn't possible there is a simple solution for feeding Lorikeets which while not a perfect diet it probably won't do them any harm either especially as your feeding should just be a supplement to what they find for themselves to eat. Dissolve about two to three table spoons of honey to a litre of warmish water which will help dissolve the honey. You can make up a large jug of this mixture and keep it in your fridge. Place a slice of bread on a dinner plate and saturate the bread with your honey water mixture and these birds will go nuts over it. The best wild bird feeders you can very easily make for yourself. You should buy a couple of flat (with only the very edges turned up) clay pot bases at least big enough so your dinner plate will fit on them easily. The birds won't chew the clay and it will provide a great non slippery perch for them that they can easily grip onto while they're feeding plus it provides some weight so they feeder won't get blown around in the wind. Next you need to buy some metal chain from your hardware store. The decorative type probably designed for hanging baskets and not for boat anchors. The larger the links the easier it will be for the birds to grip onto. Drill three holes equidistant around the clay base, attach some chain to each hole and then above the base join your three lengths of chain together with some thing like a key ring. You can then hang your feeder where ever you like and if you do so over lawn or garden you'll never have anything to clean up. I used to have two feeders, one with the lorikeet mixture and the other with just seed directly onto the clay base for the seed eaters such as rosellas and cockatoos. Please feed seed mixes to the seed eaters. They adore sunflower seed but that's a bit like feeding humans only on a diet of chocolate. That noise is the women cheering. Siting your feeder should take up a bit of time to consider as birds are easily alarmed. From a tree that provides overhead cover to the feeders but with relatively open escape routes from the feeder may prove best. The tree will also provide perches for the birds waiting to be fed instead of them chewing up your house. Remember you are only providing snacks and even then you should expect times when you won't be able to see your feeder and chain for all the birds hanging off everywhere. If you are a glutton for punishment you could attach pieces of fruit to the chains of the feeders for both the Lorikeets and seed eaters. I'm not going to mention the meat eaters who will turn up looking for a feed as well as they will quite likely be thinking they're missing out. If you think this is a waste of time believe me it is nothing compared to the time you'll spend watching if you do. A great exercise because you'll be forever wondering what each bird is, is to have a copy of "Australian Birds" or something similar and record all the different species you attract. I think I got up to about 50 on my feeders. Some will be regulars and others will drift through.

My two bird feeders (one with just a seed mixture and the other a Lorikeet mixture) were about a metre apart hanging from the same tree limb. 99.99% of the time the Lorikeets will only feed from the Lorikeet feeder and completely ignore the seed feeder even after they have eaten everything off their feeder. The exceptions requires understanding Rainbow Lorikeets as they are the bullies of the parrot family. I have seen these birds muscle in on a seed feeder and push away Sulphur Crests, Corellas and Galah's, not because they wanted to eat anything but just because they could.

Hannah, rubbish. You have been telling these lies on several Lorrie videos. Lorries love seed. I photograph birds, and after a while you discover that birds, like most animals, are actually omnivores and will eat anything to survive.
Did you know that honeyeaters spend much of their day catching bugs and invertebrates, or, that Rosellas have been seen eating meat left out for Kookies. Birds are opportunists. Do some more research before uniformed moralising.
