Show Notes:
First of all, I'm really sorry for how late this video is. It was supposed to come out the day before or after Christmas, but I got incredibly sick that weekend and spent the last week recovering for it. I'm still having some issues with my hearing, so I don't even know if this video sounds good.
Secondly, I will say that I am pretty proud of the writing in this video. I think I did a pretty good job at covering what makes this figure special but also what problems I have with it. Not that I don't typically strive for that, but I feel like overall there's a fairly cohesive message to this review.
Now that I've done a few Legacy videos in a row, I think it's time for something different. So I'll be working on that video for the rest of the month. I'm trying new stuff to streamline my process more, so hopefully I won't take too long.

While I'm not a fan of Animated I do think this figure is impressive having seats, and added detail, being on the side of a OO gauge modeler and transformers fan I have a keen eye for detail, and while this figure is missing a few bits I do think this was ultimately worth it.
I think the biggest thing that could be improved is the colors. I wish Takara still did their own color variants of Hasbro figures 😭

Yoooo they finally did the clear plastic insert technique instead of just painting clear plastic and praying to God.
Jesus that trend is annoying. Imagine his torso being made of fragile clear plastic.
Uh I mean Legacy Kickback is the best Animated character actually
Yeah he would look a million times less cool if they painted his chest. The only noticeably painted part like that is the lightbar, but you don’t even really see it in robot mode anyway 🤔
@@Gei4Mei the structural integrity of the lightbar isn't at risk either because it's not being strained by weight-bearing joints or tight clipping sections. (To be clear I'm more worried about structural integrity when it comes to clear plastic over aesthetics)

To be honest aside from his torso being 95% pecs and 5% stomach, I think this is a fantastic Optimus figure. 👍 🚒

I love animated prime he was my actual first Optimus prime I got for Christmas then my dad broke it the first day and replaced it with a bayformers Megatron I was happy but knowing I had him in my life and to what I have now I'm quite satisfied I just wish I couldve preorder it. I do wonder what they’re actually going for with the Legacy toyline. I’d thought Prowl, stuff like that one Barricade hews closer to my perceived intention that they were going for other continuities but in G1.
Bulkhead didn’t work imo because it didn’t have much of its continuity’s look, but I would say this doesn’t look very G1 if at all.
It seems like they keep changing their design philosophy based on fan response. They probably started working on year 3 when year 1 dropped, so that’s why we’re seeing the major changes now
honestly, I can excuse the lack of yellow highlights and black on his feet, I can just do that myself, gives me something to do. what's really weird is that axe. itd cool that it can extend like the show, but I definitely would have preferred if it worked more like the Gamer Edition one. definitely getting this dude because hes one of my favorite versions of Optimus and the happy meal toy of him was my first ever transformer toy

@@Gei4Mei The familiarity of the transformation. It feels almost like I'm transforming the old deluxe Prime from the 2-pack he came in with Megatron. It just brings back a lot of memories I had with that figure and the Voyager class one as well, with the weird looking axe. It's just a very nostalgic figure to me. Makes me wish I still had all those old figures.

That could be nice, like if he was a leader figure and the back of the truck became a jet pack
As much as I enjoy the look of the figure's robot mode, unfortunetly, I have to say it, thanks to the altmode, I'm starting to wonder if this could been better as an R.E.D figure.
The main reason been the bumper, or more specificly how freakien far it sticks out (and the fact that it needs extra wheels on the inside to not scrap the floor, doesn't help either.)

No, this isn't really reasonable. And it's not hard to see, this 5:19, look's worse in comparison to this 5:33.
If anything, I say the placement of the wheels, it's worse than his sticking feet.
Again the guy needs hidden extra wheels, so the bumper doesn't scrap the floor. If this doesn't show you the problem with proportions, I don't know what does.

I wouldn’t say it’s surprising that animated blends so well into the g1 aesthetic. The designers worked front to back with the animators, so they were basically siege(without a terrible show to advertise them)

4:52 Again, the designers are veering into "We did this because we wanted to flex", even though it absolutely ruins the scale (he'd be the size of BULKHEAD) and *you can't even see this shit from the outside* , which is the *sole reason the chest isn't a single piece* . Why have interior bits that you not only can't see, but aren't even in scale?
I keep seeing stuff like this creep into Legacy. It's maddening.

What's worse is that they could have fixed this by filling in that gap above the mushroom peg instead of the hands. That would let you make the seat itself larger and the new filler piece above that could house a sculpted headrest. There's so much clearance in that space.
The tiny ass steering column is still ridiculous but I've seen worse van cab setups.

What I'm really surprised nobody bothers mentioning is the waist: or, rather, the fact it's... kind of nonexistent on this figure. Lmao. For real though, it looks as though his abs are collapsed into his chest, and his chest immediately transitions into his hips. It's very bizarre-looking. Also, while some people are into it, I just don't know; with how otherwise faithful the figure is to its source material, the added panel lines and the G1 Optimus details on his arms+legs both take away from Animated Optimus's individuality for me, and only work to make his design more noisy. Animated's designs were intentionally minimalistic and stylized as part of their visual appeal, so adding detail to them kind of detracts from the designs in a way that the G1 and Unicron Trilogy characters don't suffer from. So while I don't hate this new TFA Optimus, he just doesn't appeal to me in the same way my old Voyager does (who, mind, can also hold his show-accurate axe from the Deluxe too, and honestly it's scaled to him more anyway so hey I'm not complaining lol).

I'm glad you're fairly pleased with the figure - but the point of adding non-OG characters to Legacy was to make them look like they COULD have been in the 80s cartoon show. This is why figures like Legacy Bulkhead is still best non-OG figure as, aside from his head scuplt, he wouldn't look out of place in a first or second season line up. Animated Prime here differs to strongly to do that. Now there's already an OG Prime, so it's not as big of a deal, but I hope Hasbro remembers the point of adding these characters to Legacy when they do figures who don't have an 80s counterpart.
They probably rightfully realized that's dumb and decided to make the characters actually look like themselves
