    In this video, show you the worst, and most contaminated paint that I’ve ever seen!! My friend picked up a used car and wanted me to detail it. I did exactly that, but I was in for a surprise after I gave the car a wash.
    To make your car shine as best as it can, it is crucial to remove as many scratches as you can, so the light that refracts from the panel can hit your eyes are perpendicular as possible. When the light that gets reflected is diffused by the countless scratches, the paint doesn’t have a nice shine and it looks bad. Well to get rid of those scratches, you must first remove any dirt and any sort of paint contamination prior to polishing. If you don’t you might embed the scratches into your polishing pad, and RUIN YOUR ENTIRE PAINT JOB. I’ve seen it done before, so its very important to take your time and do all of the steps correctly.
    After you wash your car, you can then follow it up with a clay bar kit. When you clay your paint, you will be introducing scratches into the paint. These scratches created in the claying process are commonly referred to as marring the paint. These are easily removable through the process of polishing your car.

    I could have pressed a little less on the paint to remove the contamination, and that would have not make the scratches that were found at 5:09. However since I knew the entire car was going to get a 2 step polish and then ceramic coated, I knew I was going to have to break out the polisher and polish the paint, so by pushing a tad harder, it allowed me to save a bunch of a lot of time during the claying stage. Regardless, a beautiful shine can be achieved, just look at the final results at 7:32.

    17 years detailing experience. I love your videos and how you really take time to explain. But please be careful when teaching others to clay that way. In no way should you scratch the car when you clay. Work the clay much more into your hands. About five minutes to warm it up. Also use a lot more lubrication and apply less pressure.

      Just wondering if you used a fallout remover after the initial wash before claying? I would have thought iron fallout remover would have pulled a lot of the environmental fallout off the paint before claying. I've got a car in similar shape to detail. Has never been washed in 6 years. That's going to be fun!

  • @AIHurrell
    @AIHurrell 7 лет назад +422

    Less pressure, more lube and you wont get the horrible marring you inflicted - gives you less to correct too... The whole point of clay is to apply the bare minimum friction, not force it onto the surface.

    • @TheKorvbrodsbagarn
      @TheKorvbrodsbagarn 7 лет назад +39

      You can actually see how hard he is pressing that claybar to the hood.. paint should never look like that after a simple claying..

    • @AIHurrell
      @AIHurrell 7 лет назад +7

      MzNToS I'm talking about the white marring which can only have been caused by the clay bar. When claying you are not meant to apply any pressure, if you force it then the clay will not glide over the surface - instead it will stick and cause lots of friction which when combined with the dirt it's picked up is equivalent to sand paper. The more pressure you apply with clay the worse it performs and the more likely you are to damage your paint, and one can quite clearly see Milan *leaning* into it and the bonnet flexing.

    • @AIHurrell
      @AIHurrell 7 лет назад +5

      Thomas Cole Unfortunately that's not how clay works. As mentioned a few times, and in anyher previous comment of mine, clay performs best and is safest with minimal pressure. Putting too much pressure will result in it acting like sandpaper. Filthy paint like that will come back clean just by spending more time on a lower pressure. For reference, when I clay my car, I can normally do the whole thing in about 30mins. When I clayed my Dads car, which had never been detailed in its 10 year life and gets put through an automated wash maybe twice a year took me over two hours to clay, but came up perfect and I didn't have to apply any pressure at all and I certainly didn't marr the paint.

    I really hope the people watching this don't go and do this to their car. you should NOT be inflicting that amount of damage to the paint when claying.

    • @mdbangsund
      @mdbangsund 7 лет назад +4

      Herbert Halstead
      i think he is using a really abrasive clay. And if you use the wrong lube it will eat the clay and make it look that way. Old clay will disintegrate and look like this. Clay is very product pacific IMO.

    • @herberthalstead7035
      @herberthalstead7035 7 лет назад +1

      Word.

    • @harris8390
      @harris8390 7 лет назад +18

      Lack of lube is what will cause that. I use the Ammo NYC method for claying... Dunk my washmit in the buck of soapy water and have that serve as a constant lubrication source as I clay. It holds a lot of water and as soon as I need more, just clench my fist a little and down it pours lol.

    • @nirvandass5114
      @nirvandass5114 7 лет назад +7

      Agreed. Unless the paint is ridiculously soft and the clay is extremely aggressive, combined with his technique, it may very well be causing the marring due to the extreme pressure.

    • @frankly2677
      @frankly2677 6 лет назад

      Herbert Halstead you got duped! The marring is not scratches its from the clay bar turning liquidy, he did this to make it look like he fixed the paint i bet he buffed it out with some spray wax.

  • @Otagner
    @Otagner 7 лет назад +45

    I just want you to know that that type of damage coming from the clayng is not normal. I've never dealt with anything quite that bad so maybe there's nothing better he can do in this case but in a regular case that is NOT normal.

    • @ianrollins3233
      @ianrollins3233 7 лет назад +7

      Otagner I have dealt with paint that bad and he was using way too much pressure. Completely miss represented how clay should be used. Can you introduce scratches while claying? Sure but more on the level of micro marring not wet sanding.

    • @CalPhotoGuy
      @CalPhotoGuy 7 лет назад +3

      I've dealt with much worse than that and had it come out fine. I don't know what he's doing wrong as I've never seen that kind of result from claying but whatever it is it's wrong.

    • @VVladislavBand
      @VVladislavBand 7 лет назад +1

      Not enough lubrication have to keep it lubed at all times. But the end results are impressive

  • @CalPhotoGuy
    @CalPhotoGuy 7 лет назад +13

    DON'T USE THIS VIDEO AS A GUIDE.
    More lube. Slow down. Less pressure. Clay pulls contaminants off of the clear coat. Doesn't need a ton of pressure to do that. You're using it like a damned scrubber. If you take your your time and do it properly, perhaps with a less aggressive clay, you may not have to polish afterward. Also, with very bad contamination you should knead the clay almost constantly. You have too much abrasive contaminants in the surface of the clay. On a badly contaminated car a couple of passes turns that clay into something as abrasive as rubbing compound.
    5:11 was horrifying. I need a drink after seeing this and it's too early to be drinking.

      Morgan Mansfield doesn't stop the fact that this guy is using the wrong method of claying and is scratching up his paint by his own fault, not because of the clay or contamination on it's own. Good claying technique wouldn't have scratched the paint up like that. You also might want to educate yourself on proper Grammer before telling others to educate themselves.

      i dont know why everyone uses that shitty spray detailer to clay bar with, you have to use practically the whole bottle doing one car to get enough "lubricant" on the paint to avoid scratches like what was witnessed in this video. All I do is wash the car, dump out old soapy water, fill with fresh soapy water and use the soapy water with the clay in sections, rinsing frequently. Takes fewer steps and doesn't require you to dry the car off in between washing and claying, plus the soapy water gives you way more lubricant between the clay and paint to lessen the chances of scratching the paint. Never had any issues doing it this way.

    You should use Iron X or something similar first to remove most of the embedded particles like tar, brake dust, and other contaminants. It's going to prevent those marring. Using car soap instead of spray detailer will be better because spray detailer contains oils that can ruin the clay and make it kinda like it is melting based from my experience.

But it did have that harsh feeling when you ran your hands over the paint. I clayed it, polished it, IPA and many layers of sealants. The car still looks amazing. I do a Menzerna 4500 every spring to just bring that pop back out and reseal it. But this is a good video. I bet your friend was happy to see this black car back on the road clean as hell. Everyone keeps saying this guy is doing this wrong but he’s actually doing it correctly. This car has a severely neglected paint job and is littered with contaminates. The clay will remove those contaminates but they get caught in the clay bar, and the clay bar is repeatedly dragged across the paint. Unfortunately, a severely neglected paint job like this WILL scratch when you clay bar it. They is no way around that. But it can be buffed out during polishing.

    Do you use mainly meguiars? The results look amazing and I want to stick to a dedicated brand for detailing.

    I love your paint correction videos. It'd be great if you made an updated, step by step video showing what pad u put on to what compound your using, how much you use, what to look for and even an estimate to how much it cost you to detail the exterior of of an entire car.

      It depends what the contaminants are, and where they are on the vehicle.

  • @MrKeenan3325
    @MrKeenan3325 6 лет назад

    The light scratching comes from the cay bar being overwhelmed by contaminants, turning the clay into "sandpaper". I bet a solvent body prep used first would have removed the majority and saved the clay bar too. I ran across this same issue with a new F250 and Porsche Boxster. Great video man!!

    How long did it take you to do the full paint correction process Milan, considering you are an expert, how much time should a novice spend on the full process? Thanks!

    • @milanmastracci
      @milanmastracci  7 лет назад

      From claying, to 2 step-polishing (along with clear-coat burn), to everything, it took me about 15 hours, plus products. I found the clear coat to be on the harder side of the spectrum.

    And all the years I have clayed cars I have never had that kind of marring from using clay you need to use a lot of lube so there is no drag from the Clay. Forget even using clay use the new wash mits that does the job for you.

    Hello,
    Can I use a clay bar on the plastic from bumper to remove bugs and other impurities?
    I also wonder what means the paint was compounded and why did you use isopropanol alcohol?. That last product won't damage the paint?.
    Thanks mate 👍

    how long does the polish last for?

  • @jg89srt
    @jg89srt 7 лет назад

    Looks way better one question though you compound the car and polished it right. So before you applied the ceramic coating what did you use to remove all the oil so it would be prepared for the ceramic coating. I'm going to be doing this soon that's why I ask. I heard about the eraser but is there anything else you used? Let me know thanks.

    • @harris8390
      @harris8390 7 лет назад

      Go to RIteAid or any pharmacy and get it Isopropyl alcohol 90%.That's what you need to get rid of all the polish oils. I made the mistake of not doing that and the oils ended up mixing with my ceramic coating. Which meant twice and work for me and a waste of some expensive coating.
