In this video, show you the worst, and most contaminated paint that I’ve ever seen!! My friend picked up a used car and wanted me to detail it. I did exactly that, but I was in for a surprise after I gave the car a wash.
To make your car shine as best as it can, it is crucial to remove as many scratches as you can, so the light that refracts from the panel can hit your eyes are perpendicular as possible. When the light that gets reflected is diffused by the countless scratches, the paint doesn’t have a nice shine and it looks bad. Well to get rid of those scratches, you must first remove any dirt and any sort of paint contamination prior to polishing. If you don’t you might embed the scratches into your polishing pad, and RUIN YOUR ENTIRE PAINT JOB. I’ve seen it done before, so its very important to take your time and do all of the steps correctly.
After you wash your car, you can then follow it up with a clay bar kit. When you clay your paint, you will be introducing scratches into the paint. These scratches created in the claying process are commonly referred to as marring the paint. These are easily removable through the process of polishing your car.

I could have pressed a little less on the paint to remove the contamination, and that would have not make the scratches that were found at 5:09. However since I knew the entire car was going to get a 2 step polish and then ceramic coated, I knew I was going to have to break out the polisher and polish the paint, so by pushing a tad harder, it allowed me to save a bunch of a lot of time during the claying stage. Regardless, a beautiful shine can be achieved, just look at the final results at 7:32.
milanmastracci Hey man love you videos! I have a 05 TSX and I'm in Toronto. I know you're in the St Catharines area. How can I get you to detail my car?!?!
holy. I've never seen marring that bad. Less pressure and more lubrication dude !
17 years detailing experience. I love your videos and how you really take time to explain. But please be careful when teaching others to clay that way. In no way should you scratch the car when you clay. Work the clay much more into your hands. About five minutes to warm it up. Also use a lot more lubrication and apply less pressure.
Depending how bad the paint is its not always avoidable.
General HowTo you are absolutely correct sir.
15 yrs exp. u know they make less aggressive clay bar. I've never seen clay scratch paint like tht...
I've been detailing for 3 years and I've never had a clay bar introduce more scratches into the paint
Just wondering if you used a fallout remover after the initial wash before claying? I would have thought iron fallout remover would have pulled a lot of the environmental fallout off the paint before claying. I've got a car in similar shape to detail. Has never been washed in 6 years. That's going to be fun!
Less pressure, more lube and you wont get the horrible marring you inflicted - gives you less to correct too... The whole point of clay is to apply the bare minimum friction, not force it onto the surface.
Cookeh ya iv never seen paint mart that bad from clay
Cookeh I mean that was really rough paint. He probably needed to press harder
You can actually see how hard he is pressing that claybar to the hood.. paint should never look like that after a simple claying..
MzNToS I'm talking about the white marring which can only have been caused by the clay bar. When claying you are not meant to apply any pressure, if you force it then the clay will not glide over the surface - instead it will stick and cause lots of friction which when combined with the dirt it's picked up is equivalent to sand paper. The more pressure you apply with clay the worse it performs and the more likely you are to damage your paint, and one can quite clearly see Milan *leaning* into it and the bonnet flexing.
Thomas Cole Unfortunately that's not how clay works. As mentioned a few times, and in anyher previous comment of mine, clay performs best and is safest with minimal pressure. Putting too much pressure will result in it acting like sandpaper. Filthy paint like that will come back clean just by spending more time on a lower pressure. For reference, when I clay my car, I can normally do the whole thing in about 30mins. When I clayed my Dads car, which had never been detailed in its 10 year life and gets put through an automated wash maybe twice a year took me over two hours to clay, but came up perfect and I didn't have to apply any pressure at all and I certainly didn't marr the paint.
I really hope the people watching this don't go and do this to their car. you should NOT be inflicting that amount of damage to the paint when claying.
PLEASE GO AND WATCH OTHER TUTORIALS.
Speechless, don't follow this guys advice. That is not how you clay bar a car.
I have claybared many vehicles and have never caused scuffing like that. I think you are applying to much pressure or something. But looks like you were making your job a lot harder than it should have been
Herbert Halstead
i think he is using a really abrasive clay. And if you use the wrong lube it will eat the clay and make it look that way. Old clay will disintegrate and look like this. Clay is very product pacific IMO.
Word.
Lack of lube is what will cause that. I use the Ammo NYC method for claying... Dunk my washmit in the buck of soapy water and have that serve as a constant lubrication source as I clay. It holds a lot of water and as soon as I need more, just clench my fist a little and down it pours lol.
Agreed. Unless the paint is ridiculously soft and the clay is extremely aggressive, combined with his technique, it may very well be causing the marring due to the extreme pressure.
Herbert Halstead you got duped! The marring is not scratches its from the clay bar turning liquidy, he did this to make it look like he fixed the paint i bet he buffed it out with some spray wax.
I just want you to know that that type of damage coming from the clayng is not normal. I've never dealt with anything quite that bad so maybe there's nothing better he can do in this case but in a regular case that is NOT normal.
Otagner I have dealt with paint that bad and he was using way too much pressure. Completely miss represented how clay should be used. Can you introduce scratches while claying? Sure but more on the level of micro marring not wet sanding.
I've dealt with much worse than that and had it come out fine. I don't know what he's doing wrong as I've never seen that kind of result from claying but whatever it is it's wrong.
Not enough lubrication have to keep it lubed at all times. But the end results are impressive
DON'T USE THIS VIDEO AS A GUIDE.
More lube. Slow down. Less pressure. Clay pulls contaminants off of the clear coat. Doesn't need a ton of pressure to do that. You're using it like a damned scrubber. If you take your your time and do it properly, perhaps with a less aggressive clay, you may not have to polish afterward. Also, with very bad contamination you should knead the clay almost constantly. You have too much abrasive contaminants in the surface of the clay. On a badly contaminated car a couple of passes turns that clay into something as abrasive as rubbing compound.
5:11 was horrifying. I need a drink after seeing this and it's too early to be drinking.
Larry from ammonyc said that if you're doing it right, claying should not leave any scratches whatsoever
great job. u just turned ur clay bar into a sandpaper.
Love the regular uploads Milan keep it up :D
In fact, I think you have done ok, but you lacked enough lubricant for your claying man. By no means, should claying cause that marring you have. You think and say it is normal, but it is not. You're a great guy and are doing well but I do not agree with you on the marring you have from the claying man. Honestly.
I appreciate the input :)
Isaac Okyere-Darko i
I claybar my car all the time from brand new, no way scratching like that is normal!
No need to clay it every time, it's very abrasive so only do it when it's needed.
mazdarati2 claybars arent abrasive at all.
They can mar the paint
U don't need to clay your car everytime. Its not good for the clear coat
Well it needs to be clayed every time before applying sealant so it should to be done 1-2 times a year at least
sorry, but i wouldnt wnat you touching my car with the way you clay. that damage is not normal and i have never experienced that, ever.
Jay G sorry but educate yourself on heavily contaminated paint and educate yourself
Morgan Mansfield doesn't stop the fact that this guy is using the wrong method of claying and is scratching up his paint by his own fault, not because of the clay or contamination on it's own. Good claying technique wouldn't have scratched the paint up like that. You also might want to educate yourself on proper Grammer before telling others to educate themselves.
*grammar
i dont know why everyone uses that shitty spray detailer to clay bar with, you have to use practically the whole bottle doing one car to get enough "lubricant" on the paint to avoid scratches like what was witnessed in this video. All I do is wash the car, dump out old soapy water, fill with fresh soapy water and use the soapy water with the clay in sections, rinsing frequently. Takes fewer steps and doesn't require you to dry the car off in between washing and claying, plus the soapy water gives you way more lubricant between the clay and paint to lessen the chances of scratching the paint. Never had any issues doing it this way.
Jay G the paint was super contaminated. It’s ineveitable. He was going to compound and polish it afterwards and he needs to remove everything before even putting in the machine. He’ll remove the scratches left by the clay with the polisher
Bro I can see the hood going down as you're claying it? WTF
Awesome vid man im trying to break into detailing and your channel is awesome. Subbed
amazing video, keep it up!
Thank you :)
great content man!
Thanks buddy :)
use a solvent based tar remover, ironx, and strong apc as a prewash before you handwash the car then clay it before polishing.
Awesome work !! Looks great.
Nice work (y) , just a little question, how many pads did you use to complete the entire car? I mean, how often do you change them while machine polishing?
bro, your video and video description is on point!
Thanks man!! :)
I like your videos - you're an awesome instructor! Thanks ;)
I was da rep for Auto Magic when Clay Magic was introduced I have never seen a clay do damage on clear coat in fifteen years
Awesome video, thanks!!!
Thanks buddy!!
Very nice work!
Thank you! Cheers!
Great video as always. Always learning from you.
Cheers Adrian :)
off topic question
will you be installing sway bars and struts in your accord?
can you explain the reasons for having them too please
Excellent video.
Just bought a black 2016 GMC Sierra and I'm trying to take care of it but it got swirls and I'm trying to get ride of those wat do u recommend, have u heard of F11
Hey Milian! Thanks for the videos. Do you have a video that shows the 2 step polish process?
Yes I do :) Look up on my channel 'how to polish your paint'
isnt clay bar supposed to remove scratches? so why here did it embed them...??
I'm glad you said it because I was about to say those headlights are sticking out like sore thumbs now... lol
You did it again buddy! Nice work
Thanks man!!
You should use Iron X or something similar first to remove most of the embedded particles like tar, brake dust, and other contaminants. It's going to prevent those marring. Using car soap instead of spray detailer will be better because spray detailer contains oils that can ruin the clay and make it kinda like it is melting based from my experience.
Super.
Thank you for tutoring.
I'll use your methods
Glad you found the video helpful :)
Dude you are an amazing detailer!!! I have learned so much and can't wait to attempt to use what I learned.
Can i use the gold california bars to clay WITHOUT SCRATCHING IT AND NOT POLISHING AFTER? Or do i ALWAYS have to polish after i clay?
where do you get all your meguiars from? do you get it online and shipped to you, or do you go to a store and buy it, if so what store.
Can you list the brand of ceramic coating you used? Is it a coating or another form of paint layer that needs to be painted on? Thanks for any info you can provide!!
ive been deeply deprived of your videos! I cannot wait to binge watch your channel again!!
AND CONGRATS ON 100K
Thank you!!! :)
I've been detailing for many years and I did the exact same procedure to my STi. When I first bought it, it wasn't nearly as bad as this infiniti. But it did have that harsh feeling when you ran your hands over the paint. I clayed it, polished it, IPA and many layers of sealants. The car still looks amazing. I do a Menzerna 4500 every spring to just bring that pop back out and reseal it. But this is a good video. I bet your friend was happy to see this black car back on the road clean as hell. Good video!
Yeah he really was!! Its crazy though how a detail can make the car look like new again, even though the car can be old, like the 03 G from the video. Cheers man!!
what a transformation!! you are a very under rated RUclipsr!
Share share share!!! :)
can i remove scratch on nano ceramic coating on my car with clay bar? if can't, could you tell me how to repair scratch on nano ceramic coating because i wax it and it make my car scratched
Great job!!
Thanks bud :)
@milanmastracci I've got old car where I had to paint a door .after that latest painted door began to contrast with the old door.what can I do for it.I need your help.my car's color Is blue.
I dont have that DA polisher.. after i clayed my car.. can i polish it by hand?
Very nice!
Amazing work
Is it must to use isopropyl alcohol after polishing? Won't I remove polish layer with this isopropyl alcohol?
Milan i live in ontario as well and cquartz says it doesnt ship to canada how did u get your hands on it
could you give us a name for a beginners da polisher that's friendly and safe to use on paint? I'm not sure which to buy and would like to avoid wasting money. Thank you for the video
The amount of filth on that car almost made me puke.
really?
Danial Daneshmand yeah
well... damn.
Does the back dye penetrate through the clear coat and dye the base layer? How does it become more black if it lies upon the clear coat?
Can you please explain?
great vid!
I have an 03 g35 as well lots of swirls and small scratches and was wondering how much will a process like this should cost me
1:50 for DJ mastracci!!
Will this work on the hood of my Forester? It has some deep tree sap stains. Nothing I’ve done seems to remove them 😫
the car should have been treated for tar and fallout first....thats why the paint is marred by the clay
Isn't better to do all the body work and then apply ceramic coatings?
is it possible to remove it for bondo/repainting a panel?
I’m so happy my old man made me become a painter in his shop when I was a young kid. I respray my cars when the paint looks tiered.
Hey Milan. What do you think about the XFE 7-15 150 Exenter Flex?
milan please answer. so if you are going to clay bar your car , you should use polish after wards?
I always do. Its not mandatory, but if you induce any scratches while claying, you can only remove them by polishing
Used something very similar that when in contact u could see the rusty material running off the surface just like in ur vid,but still had to clay bar as the solution only acts as a break down agent but thanks. That was also about 4-5 yrs ago. Technology has come along ways since then as it seems to almost every other day.Love the vids.
What kind of led light you using for find imperfections on the paint?
Danm Bro!! Good job 👏🏼
Great job car look like new paint job keep up the good work peace n blessings
Everyone keeps saying this guy is doing this wrong but he’s actually doing it correctly. This car has a severely neglected paint job and is littered with contaminates. The clay will remove those contaminates but they get caught in the clay bar, and the clay bar is repeatedly dragged across the paint. Unfortunately, a severely neglected paint job like this WILL scratch when you clay bar it. They is no way around that. But it can be buffed out during polishing.
Wow amazing result. I wonder how did you remove the oxidation on the hood or there wasn't an oxidation?
Hey Im living in Miami and I need to take my car to get detailed completely do you know of a shop you can recommend me due to I don't have time to detail the car myself
Do you use mainly meguiars? The results look amazing and I want to stick to a dedicated brand for detailing.
Yeah. Most of their products are top notch and I use almost strictly, Meguairs.
Nice one Fella going to get my mates car ready for a car show this was very helpful
I love your paint correction videos. It'd be great if you made an updated, step by step video showing what pad u put on to what compound your using, how much you use, what to look for and even an estimate to how much it cost you to detail the exterior of of an entire car.
That's not a bad idea :)
My car is new. Barely 3 months old and has rough surface (not as bad like your friend's car). Would you recommend to clay it because i wanted to wax it but im afraid i would scratch it instead i have not clay it yet. Pls adviceee thanks
wash the car
clay (watch some videos how to clay)
wash
and put some paste wax on car befor winter and after.
It depends what the contaminants are, and where they are on the vehicle.
The light scratching comes from the cay bar being overwhelmed by contaminants, turning the clay into "sandpaper". I bet a solvent body prep used first would have removed the majority and saved the clay bar too. I ran across this same issue with a new F250 and Porsche Boxster. Great video man!!
"hi milan" i have a question i have a silver car and when i was clean it! i scratched the roof leaving a bunch of lines on the clear coat ! please help !!.
How long did it take you to do the full paint correction process Milan, considering you are an expert, how much time should a novice spend on the full process? Thanks!
From claying, to 2 step-polishing (along with clear-coat burn), to everything, it took me about 15 hours, plus products. I found the clear coat to be on the harder side of the spectrum.
Awesome!
How do you take care of your car in the winter? How often do you wash it? What about the salt underneath?
Very good job !
Thank you!!
So if im going to get a clay bar and wax I have to polish it too?
hi l like your stuf you have agreat way of explaining what you do and you are doing things the wright way as l am aprofishinal detailer wish you the best of luck and good jop
dude may i know how much is that ceramic coating that you used? also the brand? thanks! good job!
It is a product made from CarPro; amzn.to/2KIqrJR
is there anything I can do about minor sun damage starting on my g35?
Hi, wondering what is that!....to the right of the wheel/above the side skirt on the panel at 8:02...?
This is insane dude, it baffles me how little people know about car paint.
And all the years I have clayed cars I have never had that kind of marring from using clay you need to use a lot of lube so there is no drag from the Clay. Forget even using clay use the new wash mits that does the job for you.
Looks great. I see an Ontario plate. Are you from the GTA ?
Hello,
Can I use a clay bar on the plastic from bumper to remove bugs and other impurities?
I also wonder what means the paint was compounded and why did you use isopropanol alcohol?. That last product won't damage the paint?.
Thanks mate 👍
1 1/2 weeks of professional detailing I like your videos and agree with you methods.
How did the whole process from start to finish take you?
Nice job Milan! ✌
I have the exact same car and my paint is not as bas as this one but there is a lot of contaminants and swirl on the paint so i’m looking to detail it myself instead of paying like 1000$
how long does the polish last for?
Looks way better one question though you compound the car and polished it right. So before you applied the ceramic coating what did you use to remove all the oil so it would be prepared for the ceramic coating. I'm going to be doing this soon that's why I ask. I heard about the eraser but is there anything else you used? Let me know thanks.
Go to RIteAid or any pharmacy and get it Isopropyl alcohol 90%.That's what you need to get rid of all the polish oils. I made the mistake of not doing that and the oils ended up mixing with my ceramic coating. Which meant twice and work for me and a waste of some expensive coating.
ok thanks so much. did you add some water to it or just used it pure??
No, you dont need to dilute it with water.
Wow....what a difference. Nice work sir. You worked a miracle on that paint.
Thanks Lee!! Yeah that paint sure looked a lot better after I gave it some loving ahah
I have never seen damage like that from any claybar ive used. What the hell
Lol you should see my 07 camry, the paint clearly is losing it's clear coat on the roof and hood. I wonder if a good wax would help.
How long does it takes you to finish one car to completely detailed?
