      I only use treats for training. :) And I use string cheese because I can break off tiny pieces for a reward. They don't need anything big. There are also other small training treats, Charlie Bears are also good. But again, treats are for training! :)

    I am so glad I found you and this video. First, I am bringing home Leo on 8/28, and his first vet appointment will be on 8/31. He will be 8 wks old on 8/24. Breeders & Dame & Sire were not on BernerGarde. He was the last of the litter not spoken for
    I do know that the breeder has not attempted to potty train since in her words, "every owner is different." Our first AKC Puppy Training session isn't until 9/8 - so I am on my own to potty train him. I have read and heard different things about using Potty Pads. Since I will be crate training & potty training at the same time & I live in an apartment - I have ordered potty pads (if I don't use them, I can always give them to a shelter). Since I have no clue about his habits ( I can ask breeder) I am not sure of where to start - or what time to set my alarm for or what schedule to set.

      Make sure you get your puppy's pedigree so you can at least put him in Bernergarde! I am happy to help if you need! I don't use potty pads because it encourages them to go in the house. I want them to immediately learn go to the door to go outside, not the potty pad. It creates a step that you just have to remove later...takes longer for the end result. I would plan on getting up 2-3 times a night for a few nights and then get it down to 2 times a night and to one by about 13 weeks and maybe none at all. Be prepared for very little sleep and early mornings.

      @@SitStaywithStacySlade Yes, I need help! From watching yours and others videos - CONSISTENCY is key. So, to that end, I am putting myself back on a schedule (wake & sleep) since the pandemic had made a schedule mute for me! I'm ordering Nature's Miracle, poop bags, a breakaway collar for this young portion of his life, a 6' slip lead, and a 16' Flexi-lead. There are a ton of parks within a 30-minute drive from me so we will be going on lots and lots of walks. I am also getting a crate with a divider so the interior can grow with him. There's more of course. I private messaged you in Facebook

    Any tips for when I go to work or she is alone for any reason? Can you get them use to go potty at a specific schedule eventually, like early in the morning and in the evening? I don’t have a puppy yet. I’m trying to learn as much as I can before I get one.

    • @SitStaywithStacySlade
      @SitStaywithStacySlade  4 года назад +1

      Yes eventually they get on a schedule and they can hold it for eight or more hours. I have an indoor/outdoor dog run for my dogs while I'm at work so they are sheltered and have access to a place to potty. Many people hire dog walkers or come home at lunch or things like that. What I don't recommend is giving them too much freedom in your house until they are 100% reliable from destruction. Usually for me around a year and a half...depending on the dog of course.

      @@kaylafarlow4644 What age? 8-12 weeks within 15-25 minutes, you have to watch them and figure out their schedule. 12-16 weeks they can hold it for awhile, but still need their structured schedule.

    We’re getting out berner this summer and live in an apartment. We also have a full grown 3 yr old GReat Pyrenees. Should we take both dogs out so that the puppy can learn from our grown dog or should we take the puppy out independently because they have to go more often then our grown dog. We’re on the 1st floor and really close to a grass area. Should we use bells by the door? That’s how we trained our adult dog but we were in a house at that time. The apt is temporary.

    • @SitStaywithStacySlade
      @SitStaywithStacySlade  3 года назад +1

      Oh I'm glad the apt is temporary as that is a lot of dog for an apartment! :) You should do both, bring the Pyr and also bring him out on his own so he learns how to cope on his own. I don't use bells, but some people find them helpful. Good luck!

      When they are babies it’s good to plan to come home at lunch or have a dog walker if they are in the house. You can have a garage space where they can potty while you are gone or an outdoor kennel, but it’s good to have “all hands on deck” for a couple weeks to do the early training 24/7 if possible.

    Hey Stacey, what is your opinion on something like Potty Plant? A grass based indoor toilet for dogs. They have amazing reviews. Thanks again for these videos. I'm hoping to get a puppy in about 1-2 years time.

    • @SitStaywithStacySlade
      @SitStaywithStacySlade  4 года назад

      I personally would never encourage my dogs to potty in the house. I think that creates a lot of bad habits, especially for a large breed. And if your dogs stay at someone else's house??? I can see how some small breed owners might use it, but I have never heard of it for a large breed.

    Hey Stacy, these videos have been great, we have a 12 week old puppy that we just got this past Saturday. We’re trying potty training and have our jackets, shoes, and everything ready by the door however a lot of times, our girl will be outside for 15-20 minutes then come inside and potty 2-3 times within 10 minutes of coming inside. We’re trying to reward a bunch when she potty’s outside but we’ve been having a lot of accidents. Would once an hour be better than trying to gauge when she has to go? Doesn’t have a a UTI, was tested Friday, any tips?

    • @SitStaywithStacySlade
      @SitStaywithStacySlade  3 года назад

      Congrats on your puppy! When you come inside does she go right in front of the door? Has this been an issue for 4 weeks? When she’s not sleeping they need to potty every 30 min or so. Take her to the same spot every time outside, leave a pile of poop there so she knows. Inside the house, keep her space small corralled right in front of the door to go outside. Be 100% consistent in the routine. She should always be in plain sight of the one door to go outside. And confined when not with you. She isn’t making the association. I would not come inside until she potties.

      @@SitStaywithStacySlade hi Stacy, we only got her on Saturday so only been happening for the first few days. She is a poop eater so would leaving the poop in a bag be ok? She mostly pees in our office so I just closed that off after a pretty deep clean. She has a favorite spot to lay down which is close to the back door so I’ll start working there and get her out the back door to the same spot and give her a key word. We’ll stay out longer and make sure she potties. We’ve been watching just about all of your videos and they have been helping a lot! Thank you so much! We love our Panda!
