  • Short bonus video! Longer cab ride video will appear online soon!
Cab ride on the instruction ride with the SNG (Sprinter New Generation). During this ride the drivers on board of the train can get used to how the train runs. But this ride is also meant for trying out functions of the train. Not to see if they work, but to get to know how to deal with it after the train has come to a full stop.
In this short bonus video you’ll see 3 sorts of emergency braking. The first is done by the ATB, the second by the dead man’s switch and the last one if activated by pulling one of the emergency brakes in the passenger area.
    Privacy:
Because of the privacy of my colleagues there’s background music under most of the video.
    Full Speed to Full Stop:
As you can see in the video it takes and empty SNG on dry track about 550 meters to come to a full stop. Can you imagine what happens if one of those parameters changes? I guess you can! It will take a lot longer before the train stops.
    ATB-system:
ATB stands for “Automatische Trein Beïnvloeding”. In English; automatic train influence system. This system makes sure the driver doesn’t speed with the train. On our first stop you can see the train is running 135km/h where 140km/h is allowed. A little further on the route is a curve where we can only drive 130km/h. As soon as the train passed the sign to slow down the train the ATB picks up the new speed. When it sees the driver doesn’t hit the brakes of the train enough it will apply all brakes of the train until it has come to a full stop.
    Dead Man’s Switch:
The dead man’s switch is meant to get a reset about every seconds by the driver of the train. This way the train knows the driver is still driving the train and didn’t get a stroke or something like that. If the driver doesn’t reset the timer you’ll see what happens in the video.
    Emergency Brake by Passenger:
When a passenger pulls one of the emergency brakes in the train all bells ring in the cabin of the driver. On this moment the driver needs to follow the rules of the law to make the train stop of a save place. If the driver doesn’t react you’ll see that the train applies the brakes automatically.
Please note: over 200 euro fines are applied to those who abuse the emergency brakes on the train.
