Just to clarify, this is not an official movie trailer, this is a university project I made at age 19. It was completed on a budget of about $50 and filmed in one morning. It was made without any crew though my brother composed the music. I also couldn't find an actor to match the build of the original character in my limited time so I went with what was available to me. That being said, there is much about the trailer I would love to have done differently, including the historical accuracy of the costume and the tagline. Some users have suggested "War Is God" as a possible tagline, which could have been great.
"War was always here. Before man was, war waited for him. The ultimate trade awaiting its ultimate practitioner. That is the way it was and will be. That way and not some other way."
This trailer goes well with the book if you imagine that the hair being stroked at the beginning is that of the Indian boy whom the Judge suddenly kills and scalps.
I'm not sure I can imagine Daniel Day-Lewis as a giant, hairless albino. I don't doubt he would give the role his all. He could pull off Glanton with aplomb.
No no, don't touch this masterpiece. Don't smear it with TV shows nowdays agendas because TV shows lack freedom of expression. The people who will watch the show would think that they've got the message and they won't be near it and that way the genuine piece of art will be enshadowed.
+Belligerent Stag you may be right, people are becoming more and more desensitised nowadays, I think it'd have to be a series if you were going to get the whole story in it, be difficult to watch if they stayed graphically faithful to the book though, children being scalped, dead babies, rape etc
well, children get decapitated, castrated, and hanged in the middle east...This is why no one cares..because they don't have to see it. The media doesn't report truth. The natives had the same daily fate. Truth isn't always easy to swallow. It will be a shame if filmmakers shy away from the greatest and most honest novel ever written...because they fear for the weak stomachs of viewers.
Who ever they would get to play the judge would have to be a great actor. The judge would be one of films greatest villains. Far more terrifying than even the dark knights joker.
Good work on this. This novel is absolutely amazing and you nailed the tone perfectly. As an aspiring filmmaker it is my absolute dream job would be to adapt this to the screen. The thought of seeing the judge on screen just gives me chills. Well done!
This eerie music is spot-on for the judge. I'm pleased to know that I'm not the only one who hears and envisions a sort of apocalyptic fever dream when thinking of Judge Holden.
Yeah, that kind of killed it. Maybe just the Blood Meridian title would have made it much, much better, as it was already heading in the right direction.
I agree, that was pretty dumb. I figured something else was coming, but just the title. Needs a much better tag line. I'm not sure this book will ever see the big screen.
For all those wanting this movie to happen, Scott Rudin (Hollywood super-producer) owns the rights, and has shut down just about every effort to have this finally get made.
I agree that much of the power of Blood Meridian comes from the words and language of the writing, but I still think it could make a great movie. Themes such as the warlike nature of man and the origin of evil are more or less eternal and even if the film isn't the masterpiece that the novel is, that doesn't mean it simply can't be done.
During the shots of the hand fingering the hair it would have been awesome if you had a voice narrating the Judge narrating all life being an offense to him. Even the birds in the sky.
Not A Pipe this has always struck me as a metaphor for the west. still to this day any nation it cannot control is subverted, sabotaged or destroyed. this is the same attitude it takes towards it citizens with the police/ surveillance state . the spirit of the judge lives today.
james deroc Western imperialism plays a significant part in Blood Meridian's narrative, but I feel that the Judge represents something more basic. He is humanity's desire for dominion. Dominion over other humans, dominion over animals, dominion over the earth we stand on. When he meets any kind of opposition, he crushes it. He seeks knowledge so that he can more effectively control his environment. He manipulates everyone around him. He is our worst aspects embodied.
this music is fucking fantastic. the digital shutter rate on the hair is fucking gorgeous. the costume design is top notch. I'm going to watch this every night until somebody picks it up
I'm an avid reader of Harold Bloom and I agree that McCarthy doesn't want conclusions about Judge Holden to be DEFINITE, but he provides a wealth of clues, enough for the reader to be reasonably sure that he is at least one of the two possibilities that I suggested. The scholar Leo Daugherty has actually written entire essays on the gnostic symbolism that pervades the novel, and the logic of his argument is very convincing. At any rate, I think it's safe to say The Judge is superhuman. lol
We may never get a full movie, and if we did, it probably wouldn't do the book justice. What we need is a miniseries, with an episode for each chapter.
People say it could never be filmed due to its length and excessive violence. But, there have been really long movies and really gory movies made in the past. Gone With The Wind is only 7 minutes away from being 4 hours long, and Lawrence Of Arabia is 3 hours and 47 minutes. Saw is renowned for its gore. Even such Oscar winners like Slumdog Millionaire feature a child having his eyes burned and then scooped out with a spoon, which is similar to the violence depicted in the novel. It would really work and translate well as a 4 hour, bloody epic with a director like Paul Thomas Anderson or the Coen brothers or maybe Tarantino, who would adapt the screenplay immaculately. It just all depends on the director and cast. For the Judge, I might choose either Conleth Hill or Vincent D’Onofrio to portray. For Glanton I’d go with Jackie Lee Hayley. The cinematography would definitely have to be headed by either Roger Deakins as he can definitely capture that western landscape or maybe Emmanuel Lubezki who would translate scenes amazingly with his environmentally continuous shots. It would definitely have to be a very long movie to fit in the entire book. At least 4 hours and 40 minutes. I mean, people sat through a 4 and a half hour extended cut of one of the Lord Of The Rings movies and lauded it. It’s not impossible, they just need the right people to make it.
So i'm just now reading this book but i love how subtle this is. Even without revealing too much just showing the back of who i assume to be judge holden carrying a scalped head is perfect implying the brutal sadistic nature of his character.
after accidentally setting off an unknown chemical reaction whilst cooking up some meth, walter white is transported back in time to 1840s New Mexico, where he becomes a scalp hunter to raise the money needed to pay his medical bills
my fav book of all time! Good job with the trailer! My only critic if you don't mind is I'd use a diffrent tag line. There are so many masterful quotes to chose from in the book. Also I'd have "the Judge" riding horseback with a rising red sun as you get closer you see a number of scalps on a lance he's holding. Of course easy for people to critize who sit on a keyboard.
Love it, great start and great music. My appetite is whetted. Whoever does this movie MUST NOT stuff it up - ya owe it to the people and it's a big challenge. Interesting to speculate who should play the parts. I reckon Brando coulda been a contender for The Judge 20 years ago (think Kurtz in Apocalypse Now). Dunno who's right now - maybe 'Every man has a scalp', just love it.
if you want to be period accurate , the book takes place in 1850 around 30 years before the invention of FMJ cartridges in the book they mostly use centrefire ammunition, caplock and flintlock pistols.
It's definitely got its high marks - the high quality, the music, the basic idea. However, I think that the guy looks too clean to be a member of Glanton's rough-riding gang. Plus, I was expecting blood on the gloves. And the tagline wasn't great. Other than that, I echo the sentiments: "Bloody amazing!" Great stuff! Hope to see more from you!
Amigo ! Congratulations from my Mexico !! I think you should create this film for this amazing book !!! My all time favorite book as well amigo !!! Adios !
For my 2 cents I would love to see a film addaptation of Blood Meridian directed by Werner Herzog... or maybe Paul Veerhoven. RIP Mr McCarthy Born: July 20, 1933, Providence, RI Died: June 13, 2023, Santa Fe, NM
Miniseries? How long do you think the novel is? It's not long at all and much of the narrative is devoted to descriptions of scenery. The storyline is basically a chain of action sequences and campfire conversations, which are going to be edited regardless just to keep the film from lagging (I'd like a good three-hour Blood Meridian, anyway). And there's no hard-and-fast rule about three-act scripts, though you could still do it for Blood Meridian. The key is not watering down the violence.
This was fantastic. Most fan trailer are really obnoxious. You really nailed the whole subject matter within a few seconds. I like the black gloves, reminds me of the Itailian Giallos.
Ridley Scott wanted to do this project, but dropped it. I think a director of a classic western should do it, anyway. but someone needs to do it. And no time or money should be spared!
I am just worried about who they will cast as The Judge. I think it should be a relatively unknown actor so we don't have any previous conceptions about the character.
This would be a great movie, but it will have to be as a good director sees it. The lyricism of this novel is so vast and perfect, I don't know how it would be possible to film it. Modern day Moby Dick. Maybe and HBO series could do it justice.....
Whoever the director is they need Roger Deakins as cinematographer (same guy who did True Grit, Assassination of Jesse James). There are many scenes in Blood Meridian that would unbelievable to see.
Great work man! This was great! Gah, now I need to go read the book again... Every film adaptation of a McCarthy novel (except All the Pretty Horses) has been great, and this, being viewed by so many as his masterpiece, simply CANNOT be done wrong. maybe that's why it's been in development hell so long - the sheer magnitude of the ideas and concepts in the book would be so hard to portray well on film.
The music for this is spot on, though I still maintain hope that no film version of this novel is ever attempted, least of all by a major Hollywood studio.
Netflix should make a 12 episode mini-series of Blood Meridian, using Joel Fukunaga, Nicolas Windig Refn, Alejandro Innaritu, & Terry Gilliam as directors, keeping the dialogue as close to the novel as possible...maybe have the Coen Bros. produce...this is turning into a prayer, sry. Also, Lord, a fatter Michael Shannon or Vincent D'Onofrio could do justice to 'the Judge' character
Worst problem with this movie is no doubt to find fiting Judge Holden. 7 feet tall, robust man who can act flawlesly and have imposing face. Visualy best choice would be either Big Show, or Kane (both from WWE) but they surely cant act for shit, let alone on level required. But it sure would be nice to have a miniseries
good job man! anyone who's read that book and isnt half brain dead should know that its a landmark of american fiction, something that one day a film-maker will attempt... god help them.
Read The Road, No Country For Old Men and Blood Meridian. All three were very hard to put down. Always imagined the Coen brothers doing Blood Meridian.
Glen Jacobs has also had a leading role in a Hollywood horror film, I would take a chance on him when the movie gets made (it will, it might be animated I heard, talk of Ralph Bakshi working with Pixar to make 3d models of his cartoons to make an animated Blood Meridian---they should get Glen Jacobs to do the voice of the judge)
@digvoldon One upshot I see is that Todd Field is set to direct it; he made In the Bedroom and Little Children. To me those films are virtually perfect and demonstrate a lot of skill and taste, and though they're not very violent, his track record suggests good things. That being said, it'll be a challenge to make the plot work on screen, and even to make the gore bearable to the eye, but maybe Field will be uncompromising and do something unprecedented like Kubrick did with Clockwork Orange.
That's what the term means, all right. And as far as having a triumphant antagonist, there's nothing to argue. The Judge is the last "man" standing, and War "will never die." By the way, just click on "Show comment" if you want to see what the troll in question wrote originally. lol
I just needed to clear up any confusion about the video, that's all. I appreciate everyone's criticism, I have learnt A LOT from the comments posted here. The great thing about RUclips is that it can be a great place for honest feedback, so I am very grateful for the time people have taken to provide their thoughts. I hope you will all be just as happy to do the same for my upcoming short film!
As much as I would love to see a film made, I agree 100%. I don't think they would be able to the book any justice. Took me a few tries to finally get through it, but it was brutal poetry.
+professorbland Horseshit. It wouldn't necessarily be a travesty. No book is unfilmable, as it always comes down to the skill and creativity of the filmmaker. True, it likely wouldn't be as rich as the novel, because McCarthy invests so heavily in the language of his narrative, but it's still possible to have a successful adaptation. If Sean Walsh can adapt Joyce's Ulysses, anything can be adapted.
Lietiel that is not horse shit at all. Film and literature are two entirely different expressions and one has the absolute possibility of holding within itself things which the other cannot touch, regardless of talent, timing and a practical budget. If you think that McCarthy's literature can be captured on film and you can say it with such ease, what other baseless comments to you throw around in the breeze? There are hundreds of authors that have written stories that cannot be anything other than what they are, a written story.
McCarthy himself sees 'Blood Meridian' as filmable and says himself that it will be difficult to pull off but the payoff will be magnificent. I truly hope someone is able to adapt 'Blood Meridian' into a film. Not only is it a great story but it would be such a great honour to get to create it and respect to McCarthy.
it could probably be done in a 3 hour epic-type film. the violence would have to be handled like the coens did it in no country for old men, with a there will be blood-esque tone. you'd have to get someone completely insane for the judge role though. that would be the most difficult part of the entire process, nailing that character.
Any film version of Blood Meridian is going to be de-clawed & sanitised beyond recognition. I mean they couldn't even get the barbecued baby scene into the film version of the Road. I might be wrong, Mel Gibson has gotten away with some gore, but not the level you'd need for a truly visceral adaptation of Blood Meridian.
Personally, I think Lars Von Trier is the only man for the job. Just watch any of his trailers and you can imagine The Boy's story being told through his lens. He captures the realism of fly on the wall but with the depth and detail of a documentary.
Just to clarify, this is not an official movie trailer, this is a university project I made at age 19. It was completed on a budget of about $50 and filmed in one morning. It was made without any crew though my brother composed the music. I usually never venture into the comments section, but yes, this is a gripping and superb trailer
Frankly, I like the tagline
"War was always here. Before man was, war waited for him. The ultimate trade awaiting its ultimate practitioner. That is the way it was and will be. That way and not some other way."
This trailer goes well with the book if you imagine that the hair being stroked at the beginning is that of the Indian boy whom the Judge suddenly kills and scalps.
I put the book down for a good few days after that passage
He never sleeps, the judge. He is dancing, dancing. He says he will never die
"What brings men together, he said, is not the sharing of bread but the sharing of enemies."
Wet dream: Blood Meridian adapted by Coens/Fincher/PTA
Glanton portrayed by Daniel Day-Lewis
Daniel Day Lewis: The Judge
Ive had the exact same lineup in my head for years. P.T.Anderson alone..with DD Lewis would make this come to life!
I'm not sure I can imagine Daniel Day-Lewis as a giant, hairless albino. I don't doubt he would give the role his all. He could pull off Glanton with aplomb.
Vincent D'Onofrio for Judge. I bet Philip Seymour Hoffman could've nailed it too.
he is too small
I do not believe there is a man on earth who could properly portray the judge on film, but excellent job with the teaser. Perfect music.
this should only be done as a 12 episode hbo series 2 hours is not enough
I really like this idea. A season would allow so much more development and would have a much better chance of telling the story as whole as possible.
No no, don't touch this masterpiece. Don't smear it with TV shows nowdays agendas because TV shows lack freedom of expression. The people who will watch the show would think that they've got the message and they won't be near it and that way the genuine piece of art will be enshadowed.
What about a novel adapted to a graphic novel, or a comic book?
I was thinking it should be a 4+hr epic, dual directors, and with AI for certain visual scenes.
as interesting as it would be you could never do a truly faithful adaption of blood meridian because it would just traumatise people
+Belligerent Stag so it would never get made
+Belligerent Stag you may be right, people are becoming more and more desensitised nowadays, I think it'd have to be a series if you were going to get the whole story in it, be difficult to watch if they stayed graphically faithful to the book though, children being scalped, dead babies, rape etc

did you see west world?
First season was great, second was a mess.
Well done!
Honestly man if you ever did adapt it would have to be a tv show or else you wouldn't be able to ha e enough time to depict all the brutality
This eerie music is spot-on for the judge. I'm pleased to know that I'm not the only one who hears and envisions a sort of apocalyptic fever dream when thinking of Judge Holden.
Its great minus the "Every man has a scalp"
Yeah, that kind of killed it. Maybe just the Blood Meridian title would have made it much, much better, as it was already heading in the right direction.
I agree, that was pretty dumb. I figured something else was coming, but just the title. Needs a much better tag line. I'm not sure this book will ever see the big screen.
Yeah I didn't care for it either, seemed cheesy.
+isaiah nguyen Yeah. If they absolutely had to have a tagline, it should've been: He says that he will never die.
@@JakeNaughtFromStateFarm No tagline neccesary
For all those wanting this movie to happen, Scott Rudin (Hollywood super-producer) owns the rights, and has shut down just about every effort to have this finally get made.
As he should until there is a viable script. Its going to be a bitch of a film to make but it'll be worth the wait if it's done right.
Damn, dude. This trailer is bad-ass. Love the music, too. The notion of a svelte Judge Holden is interesting, as well.
I think the music is even better! Totally amazing, and definitely makes me think of all the horrors in the book Blood Meridian. Kudos to you, sir!
im only 80 pages in, and its the most cinematic book i have ever read. so much beautiful and hellish imagery comes to mind as i devour this book
Yeeeesssss. Do a film that is true to the book, it will make Silence of the Lambs look like a children's story.
During the shots of the hand fingering the hair it would have been awesome if you had a voice narrating the Judge narrating all life being an offense to him. Even the birds in the sky.
.
its freedom that he was offended by

Western imperialism plays a significant part in Blood Meridian's narrative, but I feel that the Judge represents something more basic.
Bleak. Raw. Desolate. Ruthless.
If the film can keep with these - it should do some justice to the most magnificently brutal books I've read.
@AndrewIngramVideos Wow, brilliant , brilliant work sir. This is one of the best trailers I have ever seen, including major studio trailers.

I think Blood Meridian is impossible to film. However, this trailer is excellent.
I think John Milius writing an adaption of Blood Meridian would be amazing.
So i'm just now reading this book but i love how subtle this is. Even without revealing too much just showing the back of who i assume to be judge holden carrying a scalped head is perfect implying the brutal sadistic nature of his character.

When the lambs is lost in the mountain, he said. They is cry. Sometime come the mother. Sometime the wolf.

The real tagline for Blood Meridian should be "The evening in the west is red."
For an "amateur" effort, that's seriously good mate! Nicely done!
Love it, great start and great music. My appetite is whetted. Whoever does this movie MUST NOT stuff it up - ya owe it to the people and it's a big challenge. Well done, this will no doubt be a better trailer than whatever atrocity is made by Hollywood to cash in on Cormac.
This was really well done. Cheers to you.
This trailer was shot so well, it kills me that you guys didn't attempt to make an indie fan film. Then again, it would be a hell of an epic.

I'm very impressed with your work on this good sir
Make that movie your life's project and your life will be worth it to you.
This passage somes up the premise entirely. Thank you
Reminds me of the flashback scene in Once Upon A time in the West.
Complete with annoying music.
Anyone else think the guy that plays The Swede in Hell on Wheels should be The Judge if they ever make this movie?
hemmingwayfan If he gains a bunch of weight, sure
So sad that such a talented guy only has one upload, from years ago. What happened?
Great work mate perfect teaser I guess you can just tell thats the Judge
that was freaking awesome.
I think Clancy Brown would be a good judge. He’s huge, plays great villains and has a deep intimating voice
That would be incredible.
Absolutely brilliant. You good sir, are very talented
Very well done, man!
Genuinely good job.
Wow this was great work!
VERY nicely done.

I love your work
this is pretty amazingly well done. just great
I am just worried about who they will cast as The Judge. I think it should be a relatively unknown actor so we don't have any previous conceptions about the character.
Good luck finding actor for Holden The Judge.
Kane the wrestler
The lead singer of Midnight Oil.
Matthew McConaughey or Daniel Day Lewis.
Brilliant mock trailer

I hope this gets turned into a film soon

Hollywood magic can make a competent actor seem 7'. No need to cast an actual giant.
Hire short actors for the other parts, they're a common breed.
good job man! anyone who's read that book and isnt half brain dead should know that its a landmark of american fiction, something that one day a film-maker will attempt... god help them.

if someone were to make this into a movie, it would be 18 hours long
Could also be an ad for Head and Shoulders
The Judge is the last "man" standing, and War "will never die." By the way, just click on "Show comment" if you want to see what the troll in question wrote originally. lol
I should add, however, that I don't think Blood Meridian should ever, ever, ever, ever, ever be made into a movie.
There is no way it would get an R-rating
It´s a good trailer. Simple not overloaded. About Blood Meridian: Does 'unfilmable' really mean anything anymore?
The music from Meek's Cutoff would work amazingly with Blood Meridian.
Pretty damn good
I just needed to clear up any confusion about the video, that's all. I appreciate everyone's criticism, I have learnt A LOT from the comments posted here. The great thing about RUclips is that it can be a great place for honest feedback, so I am very grateful for the time people have taken to provide their thoughts. I hope you will all be just as happy to do the same for my upcoming short film!
any film of blood meridian would end up a travesty of the novel. the themes in the language hold too much for film to capture correctly.
If Sean Walsh can adapt Joyce's Ulysses, anything can be adapted.
this is hard to argue with
Lietiel that is not horse shit at all.
I loved it!
Personally, I think Lars Von Trier is the only man for the job. Just watch any of his trailers and you can imagine The Boy's story being told through his lens. He captures the realism of fly on the wall but with the depth and detail of a documentary.
