Eddie said that when he went to Buffalo to record this at Rick’s studio/home, he got stuck there for two week because of a massive snow storm. He said that those two weeks where some of the best times he ever had in his life.
He was always doing hysterical impersonations of Rick James on SNL. At first starting to sing he was tentative. But, after a few beats dropped it was on! You should have heard the Radio DJ’s absolutely dreading having to play it! Weren’t laughing anymore after it became #2 on the charts for 3 WEEKS!!
I knew it was a hit back then...but I forgot this song stayed #2 on Billboard Top 100, for 3 weeks. Second only to Say You, Say Me, by Lionel Richie. To take in the full scope of what that means, you would have to really understand that era. It was the sound of that era. To be on the Top 100, wasn't that easy, because it was all genre's, it wasn't broken up into just RnB, Pop, Rap, Rock or whatever. It was everybody. Love his reggae music, but that doesn't take away from this!! Even makes all of the Charlie Murphy tales, that much funnier and interesting. LOL
I am glad you are discovering Eddie the singer. He has another soulful song titled 'How could it be... that you don't love me anymore'. You should check out that one also. My favourite Rick James songs are: 'Hard to Get' and 'Give it to me baby'
Haters always have something negative to say, but when this song came out FOLKS was BUMPIN IT. In the right rotation you can still bump it. At least he had the BALLS to do it. Shout Out J.T from the Bay Area, Ronnie BIGDOG

They had a bet that Rick could write a song for Eddie that would be a hit
A banger since 85’
Hard not to take Eddie seriously with the Rick James AMMO backing him up, though Eddie sang well for sure.
Featuring Rick James, the background vocals. The deep voice. Rick
Back in the day, celebrities were genuinely multi talented.
Please check out the other song that Eddie Murphy sang as well.
It's called, I was a king. this was supposed to be from the Malcolm x movie.

His reggae music is better. It's pure.
Rick James - "Fool On The Street"

Try listening to some Ashford and Simpson, Street Corner and Solid.. They wrote for artists from Ray Charles (let's go get stoned) to Chaka Khan'.
My favorite from Ashford & Simpson was a track called "Nobody Knows" released in 1979...
