i totally just ordered these shifters. i have a diamondback response and want to go drop bar on it. really hoping these work well with my shimano 8speed mountain derailure. and 3 speed mountain front derailure.
I didn't say it earlier because I didn't have time but this is a very good video. I'm very much into budget builds and I think everybody should have at least one budget build in the garage. My bike started that way and now it looks like it actually cost something but it's really cosmetics.
Could you help me. I'm using MicroNew 2x8 and old Shimano 600 tricolor brakes. The breaking power is very poor. What could the reason? Different cable pull lenght?
It's hard to know without looking at it but it could be different pull lengths. I'm assuming the pads are new and aligned correctly? What cable housing are you using? Sometimes switching to compassionless brake housing (Jagwire makes a good one) helps. That made a huge difference for me on my gravel bike.
Thanks for the review. Three years later, what do you think of the shifter s? And have you ever used the current Shimano 7 speed shifter, I think it’s the Tourney?
Unfortunately I didn't get any ride footage! I ended up swapping out some of the parts from this bike to build a road bike about a week ago. I tend to always be changing things up! Thanks for checking out the channel!
What brakes do these shifters work with? I have them on my bike and I’m using some disc callipers, but the levers feel very loose and I’m not getting the brake power and response I was expecting. I’m not sure if it’s the levers, the pads, or the rotors.
do you use a 1 piston caliper? because these shifters works well with small calipers or rim brake because they only need a small movement in cable in order to brake
I purchased a single right side MicroNew R8 for my 1x8 gravel bike and so far it has worked flawlessly. I got mine for $29 including shipping from China via Aliexpress. It matches well with a knockoff TRP brake lever that I got on Amazon ($13 for the lever set including Prime shipping). I am wondering if MicroNew is actually part of MicroShift and maybe a brand that is primarily sold overseas. They appear to be identical, even the font of the MicroNew logo is the same.
Hey man i really want replace the flatbar on my old MTB with a drop bar and i was wondering if the Micronew r7 brifters would work on older MTB derailleurs? (Mine's the Shimano EXAGE 300 LX) thanks man!
Hello! It's March 2021, seems to be 1 year after this video... looking to replace my Triban RC100(the entry level road) How's the Shifters now? What's the total months of use so far? Thanks! Great video btw.
Thanks! I actually don’t have them on my bike right now. I’ve used them for a total of 5 months or so and they were still working flawlessly. No issues
Hi What front derailleur are you using please ? I have these for a Schwinn Kempo drop bar conversion and I’m having trouble dialing in the front derailleur shifting. I’ve tried the original one on the Kempo (a Shimano MTB version), a Shimano Sora road triple, and a SRAM Apex. Please let me know! Thank you ! EB
@@PennyPinchingCyclist what was i saying. Sorry that i wasn’t being specific with my question. I am looking to buy a silicon protector for the r7 lever that I recently ordered but i cant find any for the r7. Most of them are shimano’s, is there any shimano’s lever that is similar to the r7?
I’m not sure if the shimano will fit the r7, I haven’t compared the levers between the two. You might want to take it to a bike shop and see if they might be able to help.
The shifting is good! Clean and crisp. The only thing that takes a little getting used to is how far you have to move the shifter until it drops to the next gear.
A nice bike has not to be expensive. Great build! How does the R559 feel, when you brake? Does they feel "spongy"? I want to buy them for my Peugeot road bike from 1986.
Compared to the shimano 105 brakes, they feel slightly spongy. Not enough to stop me from using them by any means, though. Also, these are the long reach caliper, so that may factor into the slight spongy feel. If you do purchase them, let me know how they work out for you! 🍻
@@PennyPinchingCyclist I think I will purchase them. As I know right now, they are the best long reach caliper which are available in a nutted version. The complete rebuild of the peugeot will take some time. Hopefully, it's finished in August. I will let you know. Best regards from Germany Jonathan
It’s much better than the single pivot weinemann brakes on my vintage Bridgestone from 1975. Longer reach caliper arms lets me convert to 700c rims seamlessly. my vintage was on 27”.
I realise now that one of my older bikes has the shifter cable coming out of the side and it does not matter to me at all. I have two other bikes one with broken brifters and the other with 11speed brifters on 10 speed mech both internal (ST 57000 and ST 5800). Do you know if can I use the same shifter cables that are on my internally routed Shimano Brifters? By the way, with regard to brake pads I recommend www.aliexpress.com/item/2044339230.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.27424c4dha8fCf Option 19 at 5.35 USD a pair but perhaps they are not penny pinching enough. I have also had option 13 at a dollar cheaper.
Ya, you shouldn’t have any problem using the shifter cables. If you’re swapping cables from a different bike you’d just need to make sure you have enough length. The cable diameter is the same for internal/external housing. And thanks so much for the brake pad recommendation, that price isn’t bad at all!
A couple notes on these components: First, the Tektro R559 brakes are their long reach version. Don't buy this model unless you need the long reach. Tektro has two other shorter reach models that will work better on many applications. Second; I bought the Micronew 7 speed brifter to use with their 7 speed rear derailleur, and found that I could not get the indexing to work well with a 7 speed freewheel. Each shift moved the rear derailleur a little to far for the 5 mm spacing of a seven speed freewheel. So I tried them with a six speed freewheel and the indexing is great. So there is a problem with the cable pull ratio in one of the components. If the seven speed brifter works well for this guy, it is probably because he is not using it with the Micronew rear derailleur. Third; if the Micronew brifter and rear derailleur work well with a six speed freewheel, they should also work with a five speed freewheel, since the cog spacing is 5.5 mm on both five and six speed freewheels.
That’s a good question. I believe the Microshift hoods would fit on these, but I’m not 100%. I couldn’t find anyone selling the Micronew hoods by themselves.
Hey, do you think the cable pull would match an old acera 7 speed mtb rear derailleur? The loose shifter cables do bother me a bit, so I'm still thinking about wether do go full budget build and just switch to these brifters and mini v brakes, or wether to buy a claris r2000 brifters and RD set.
I’m not 100% sure, but I think it would match the acera 7 speed derailleur...the Claris/rd combo would be a good set up too. Let me know what you decide and how it works out!
@@PennyPinchingCyclist Other video review on Micronew, said, and show, that the gear lever took a long inward movement to change the gear, and the drop gear lever is poor reacheable from drop bar. What do you think? Claris costs a bit more than double, and in fact I don't know how better it is, related to this Micronew chararteristics. About compatibility, I saw that shifters and derrailers from shimano are all compatible in range of 7 8 9 speed, so claris, sora, can run on any derraileur, tiagra not anymore. So if micronew is compatible with shimano, should run fine with any 7 8 9 shimano derraileur.
I agree that there is a longer push movement needed to change the gear, but these are budget items, so I can’t really expect them to be on par with some of the higher end options out there. It’s a little awkward at first but it’s easy to adjust to. For the amount of money it saves, I think a little longer push of the lever is worth it! Cheers!
@@PennyPinchingCyclist I decided to go with the claris r2000 because of the hidden cables, and I'll see if I can also put an 8 speed cassette on the back.

They are plastic, but they don't feel like the cheap, flimsy plastic. Mine are still holding strong!
