So to my understanding MSI doesn't consider this as a manufacture defect, so they don't cover it under warranty, and that also means they won't make a recall. They're ripping people off, you can make a case that it's a low form of theft, people aren't getting what they paid for and MSI knows they're doing it as they have several models with the same issue. My girlfriend got the GF63 and her frame broke right above the hinge, I was able to brace it with aluminum tape and straight sections cut from bobby pins (which are spring steel). Also, her battery needed replaced after a year because it swelled, the batteries are known for doing that in MSI laptops and with this issue you run the risk of your house burning down. They might give you good specs but you're getting a very sub par frame and shell which they won't recall, and they won't even recall the far more disturbing battery issue. Needless to say, I will never consider an MSI laptop after seeing this, I will recommend against them.

My brand new MSI had massive screen bleed when I got it out of the box. I contacted the company I bought it from and they said that there was no way for me to prove that it wasn't me who broke the screen when I took it out of the box. If I wanted a replacement I'd have to send it back to them and they'd send it back to MSI for testing. This would take from 2 to 4 weeks. I was also using the laptop for work purposes, so couldn't wait 4 weeks for a replacement, so I tried to deal with the screen bleed myself. Through lots of squishing and pushing, I got it down to minimal levels (although it's still there). 4 months later the hinge broke. 3 months after that the screen started to defect further.
I'm now 23 months after purchase and the hinge is so screwed that the screen pulls away from the laptop and the bottom layer of the laptop cracks off.
I'd give my laptop a month, if I'm lucky, before it breaks completely. For the amount of money I spent on this thing, 2 years is a terrible life span.
I will never buy MSI again. Horrible construction. I have a newer version, the GS75. So this issue has still not being addressed 4 years after this video was made.

I just bought an MSI GF75 Thin a month ago while it was on sale. So far my expectations highly exceeded until I found about the hinge-problem. I immediatly took a closer look on my product if the hinges are too tight and my fears became true. It already makes small crackle sounds no matter how soft I try to open/close it.
Good thing for me tho is that I´m mostly stationary so I can leave it opened up so that I barely have to transport it anywere, safing some usage before it (hopefully not) breaks. Nontheless, it sucks so hard if you also plan to actually travel alot with such a machine.
In my case, I´ll wait until the warranty wears off so I can make the fix of yours as a first step of enhancement/improvement since I plan to use my machine in a long term (at least 5 years with casual play only). Until then I improvise on how I open/close it without breaking.

1st behind the hinge itself and then clamp. After at least 16 hrs. apply over the hinge and fill in open areas. Should do the trick. I also invested in a set of Metric mini and SAE wrenches from Amazon. I fix everything around this place so the $20 was worth it. The nut size on the hinge was 5.5 mm. You can't get a mini ratchet on the nut because of the design. I tried the needle nose plyers but the nut was so tight I couldn't budge it. What a small hinge assembly for a 17 inch screen. Terrible design and Costco should be ashamed of their refusal to make things right for their customers like me who have been a member for 20 + years.

Oh man, this pains because I stretched my budget way too much to try and keep up with university software demands. So I went and bought a $2800 MSI g63 Raider ordered to top specification. And my screen snapped at the hinge this morning, spitting out splinters of plastic. MSI.... I'm already up to the gills in bills... why do you have to make a panel that lasts 3-12 months?

Thanks for this video! I have a GE72 2QF that has had the hinge freeze and front bezel crack twice. The first time MSI repaired it (quickly) under the factory warranty, but the hinges froze up two years later and the front bezel cracked, so I had to take it on myself.
    Two Notes:
    - If you loosen all four screws on both hinge brackets you can remove the back cover and get to the hinge nut with a small wrench.
    - I didn't want to use epoxy to repair the brackets because I was worried about cementing the screws in place. Also, 3x wires for the monitor run under the left bracket. Instead, I placed a 3/4" binder clip around each bracket once the bezels were back in place. The binder clips compress the bezel and brackets, taking the load off the spot where it cracked. Once the binder clips are in place you can remove the metal handles and leave just the black clamp in place. A bit of electrical tape keeps it from popping off. It's not pretty, but it's completely reversible if I ever decide to replace the cracked bezel.
ETA: example 3/4" binder clips: goo.gl/nE2EBt

broken hinge as well on GE75 Raider with light use 14 months old, extended 2 year warranty by Costco would not cover as MSI wont admit that it is a defect covered by warranty per Costco (not certain who is giving me the runaround here) Nonetheless, I appreciate the video so I may repair this on my own. Understand potential design flaw, those things can happen. Its the miserable customer service from potentially both companies that is criminal and even if MSI changes design their uncaring customer service will still be the same. That should be the lesson to all of those that post replies that the design has changed.

Update from my previous post: Today I managed to repair my GE73VR.
Take out the bezel is not such an easy task. Mine was glued around frame with thin double sided tape. During bezel take out must be very careful and best way to do it, use a hot hair dryer gun. More heat you supply more easy to unglue from frame. In the lower part of screen where MSI logo lies, bezel is clipped with small plastic edges so pay attention during unmount. Same on the left and right down edges where tight bolts are located. I had a minor problem on some spots of the LED frame. During bezel take out, I accidently also removed the black sticky frame tape protecting the LED screen around. This is not a big deal as you may apply later black insulation tape (PVC Electrical). If you don’t then you will face white light leaking from those spots where the tape removed and will be annoying during screen operation. Do not forget to remove the old and reapply new double sided tape around bezel as the old tape won’t result same grip on bezel and was already destroyed during removal.
Now, in order to proper repair the broken part of the plastic hinge, I removed all screen frame (4 left + 4 right small flat head screws) and I applied two part adhesive glue as the video but only where the broken part was and also on the back side touching the screen frame. I was very delicate and I took my time to apply the glue as you should be very gentle on what you do. Do not apply to much glue as this will result with a thick joint and later bezel will not stand on properly. Using this technic, allowed me to screw back the frame (after 24 hours) and let no gap between the bezel and screen. Keep in mind, my hinge broke on left side where screen and web cam cables are passing next.
Let it dry 24 hours as mentioned and then you should be able to mount back the all screen frame.
Do not forget to let loose the bolts on both sides as mentioned on video. If don’t then expect soon a new brake in hinge. Good lack and too bad for MSI to supply (as realized) all series of laptops with such a bad construction. MSI should had correct this problem from early models and not let it appear again and again in all future series.
By the way, time of repairment was around 5 to 6 hours total but I was too slow and careful on what I was doing.

    • @Meccaill
      @Meccaill  6 лет назад

Good job on ur fix dude!! u did good and also pointed out some issues that i encountered as well but did not mention in my video. Very true that the double sided tape AND the black plastic gets damaged when pulling off the bezel, unless perhaps using a heater gun or hairdryer to heat it up but i did not want to do that, to avoid damaging the actual LED. anyhow the simple solution to all that was to head to hardware shop and get a small roll of 3M double sided adhesive tape. Once i removed the old tape and cut out the loose black plastic on the led, the Bezel with new tape stuck to the screen like new, if not better with absolutely ZERO light leakage.

Ugh, adding my hinge complaint to the pile.
I bought a GE75 raider at the very end of 2020 and within about 12 months of use, the plastic hinge cover completely shattered, both the front and the back. It was completely busted, and while the main metal part of the hinge remains connected to the bottom of the laptop, the connecting screw must have flown out when the plastic shattered, because that part is completely gone. Because of this, the screen is no longer stable on the right side as there's no structure to connect it to the base of the laptop, so it's wobbly and droops down to the right slightly. The exposed metal hinge now sits behind the screen, completely useless.
Since warranty had expired by then and I absolutely did not want to deal with MSI's customer support and fees required for repair, my broke ass taped the bottom of the screen so that it's connected to the base of the laptop enough so that it stays upright. It's jank and a poor solution, but as the left hinge is-surprisingly-still properly in place and functional, this provides enough stability for the screen to remain upright. That being said, I refuse to close the damn screen at this point out of fear of causing the left hinge to shatter, so it's never leaving my apartment now and remains just a glorified and horribly shitty desktop!
Just trying to hold out until I can get myself a desktop to replace it. These "gaming" type laptops aren't worth the headache. Although the MSI GS70 Stealth I used to have did not have any hinge issues, it did eventually start to fail with excessive overheating, keys breaking/falling off, slow booting/loading, etc. Hell, the Lenovo G series laptop-that I had over a decade ago-also had a hinge cover shatter, so it's not even just an MSI issue. Such a rip off paying for gaming capable internals when the externals aren't of the same quality.

The design is still shit. Just had a customer come in with a Stealth Thin GS65 where the stupid plastic at the back of the hinge broke/split. Laptop Repair tech here. Some advice on this repair, that we just dealt with. First, the left hinge and the right hinge, are very different. The left hinge is more sunken in, so the expoxy can go in easily and expand and the bezel will go right on, but the right hinge is more bulky and the epoxy will expand and prevent your bezel from going back on. Both hinges are only able to be loosened so much and the unit we worked on, was already in it's loosest state possible, so loosening would not help. We used expoxy designed for engine blocks, but even then, looks like people on reddit still had the hinges break. It's probably best to just avoid these models all together or send it back for a refund. Hopefully there is a class action lawsuit of some sort, because this is clearly very poor design.

Hi I found an easy quick $4 repair for mine. Purchased package of 4 Fixed Clips for 1/4 inch mirror hanging at the home improvement store. It was Gardner Glass Product. The clips fit perfectly and with just a small amount of black (or design of your choice) Duck Tape to hold the cllips you have a quick cheap repair. You can use 2 clips on each side where the hinges are located and the small side of each clip is angled perfectly to catch the back of the lid. The longer side of the clip supports the front of the lid (screen side). They are thin enough not to interfere with the power button etc. I was heart broken when my one year old apache's lid split at the hinge corner. This saved the day. I recommend using these clips as a preventative action even where the lid has not split yet. Took about 10 minutes to do. Hope this helps someone.

Tunahn yes. It seems like they all break and MSI won’t fix them. The weight of the screen pulls the metal threads out of the plastic around the back of the screen. It started popping a few months after I bought it, then about 6 months later, the screen broke loose on the right hinge. The part to fix it off eBay is almost $80 shipped from China. And then the whole computer has to come apart to get to the hinges. I would definitely consider another brand if I were you.

Right hinge +1.... for me there is something blocking the way and I could not loosen up the screw nut, I have to grind away the stupid thing to loosen the screw nut. Luckily for me my computer didn't suffer from permanent damge. My laptop is GL75. Thank you for your video.

My msi gl62 6qd has the exact same issue and it’s even worse because the lid is plastic, so the lid is cracked and the hinge snapped in half lol.

I'll never ever again buy MSI laptop. I had the same problem with GE72. I also had problems with touchpad buttons. They've just collapsed after some time.

Had my MSI GP73 Leopard 8RF for just over 4 years and my hinge just broke. First problem I have had with the laptop really. Gutted. I cannot afford a new laptop. I've fixed hinges on some of my other laptops so hoping I can just glue/chemical bond it and loosen the bolts a little bit and it will be fixed. Fingers crossed.

      How'd it go?

    • @1DY.
      @1DY. 2 дня назад

@@rotatorcuffs8140 ok. Still going on that laptop although the other hinge has loosened off quite a bit now so the lid isn't as rigid as it should be. Could do with tightening it all up again but don't want to risk it now it's too frail and will probably just break.

I had the same issue with my MSI Laptop. It´s probably a production error in this model.....Rude to sell something like that though

Bought 2 of these Msi Laptops for my son's, £1000 each with 2 year warranty, hinges break, one broke just before 2 years, the other just after 2 years, Msi repaired one but refused to do the other, obvious design fault, DO NOT BUY THESE LAPTOPS!

I got this fixed once and by MSI and after about a year it happened again! Why make such a bad design? If I close the laptop the whole screen will rip out!

The hinges on my GE73 have broken 3 times and its barely a year old. I've got it repaired from computer repair shops all three times, but the third time I specifically told them about this video and the comments and that they should consider loosening the hinges and using cement. Really hope it doesn't break again :/

Got an MSI GE72VR 6RF... the only issue i had, it was a bios update needed for my laptop to work proberly... got it for about 2.5 year now, never had any other problem... But now, i'll need to clean a bit the ventillation system and change the thermal paste... start to heat up too much when IDLE. but if you take care of your laptop, you won't have much trouble :)
(taking care by cleaning it, using something to avoid dust to get into the ventillation, etc...)
    Nice video also :)

i had this problem with my Lenovo computer and since the frame was aluminum, i drilled holes through lid and put in longer bolts which worked. after about two years, my MSI just broke so i will use your solution this time on the MSI. Thank you very much!

i also bought a very small thin file that i broke and glued on top of the hinge after gluing hinge in place, to get more strength. i'm not able to loosen the other hinge unless i break off the plastic cover and use a 7 socket wrench, but it doesn't seem too tight, so i'll let it go and open and close slowly. i used Gorrillaweld glue steel bond epoxy for 4250 psi strength. Thanks again! when i broke it i think the cord may have been in the hinge crack, which caused the leverage to go whack.

Msi pe60 here, used it for 3 and a half year, and it suddenly broke in the midnight out of nowhere, i thought it's my problem but after watching your video and the comments i realised this is quite a stupid mechanism from MSI

Good to know... Thank you I just found out MSI will not provide part or repairs on machines 5 years old. Lack of supporting their own products will have me looking elseware next repair. As Cloudyhb Gamer posted... this is a lot of money not to have professional follow-up.

I had the same hinge problem after 8 months of purchasing; and they refused to support.
8 months later broke again for the second time; they were troubled yet did nothing to support.
A week ago it broke again; this is the third time; and i will not risk waiting their slow repair service and bad customer experience.
I’m looking for solutions here and will do it my self.
But 100% sure MSi is never a choice for me anymore.
