  • This is our walkthrough of the Stamford Town Center mall in Stamford, CT from May 13, 2021. We've shown this mall off once before very early in the channel and figured an update was in order. Good thing too, because it appears this mall is on somewhat of a death spiral, with many stores vacant preferring instead to relocate to the new SoNo Collection in Norwalk. Much of the center of the mall is still doing pretty good with high end retailers holding down the fort. But the anchor wings are another story, with rows of vacancies lining the walls and big junior anchor spots sitting empty. Despite all this this mall has the nicest Macy's we've been to.
Songs used in this video (in order):
    Steve Gray - Velvet Magic
Patrizia Calvi - Dressed in Red
Syd Dale - First Flight (Gerry Butler)
    Alan Hawkshaw - Sky Train
Paul Mauriat - Le Peintre Des Étoiles
    Simon Park - Lady May
David Marriott, Jr. - On the Seventh Day
    Steve Gray - Wonder Groove
    Steve Gray - Reach Out
    ---------------------
I'd like to say a few words about being an ambassador to your local malls. We have been taking the time to visit all the malls within a reasonable driving distance to check up on them and see how they are doing. Also filming an updated video every year or so, regardless of the lack of many changes, just so there is a video record of the health over time. We think this is an important thing to keep tabs on, especially in these wildly turbulent times. The health emergency has accelerated the impending Retail Apocalypse we've all been talking about these last several years. This was already a big problem, but the restrictions have made the issue 5x worse and likely hastened the death of the enclosed shopping mall.
I know we've all been on pins and needles wondering how bad the fallout is going to be from all of this.
There really is no way to know exactly unless we ALL go and do our small part to make it known how it turns out. I implore you, if you have the means to pick an area you would like to be an ambassador for, and go document your local malls. Whatever your medium, it doesn't matter, any and all documentation is necessary and vital in this day and age. Whether it be on Social Media, Flickr, RUclips, any platform gets it out there and preserves it for posterity. We can't paint this picture unless we all grab a brush...

We used to visit this mall once a year between 1987-1990 from Maine. I always loved the experience of being there. We used to get lunch at the A&W on the top floor if my memory serves me correctly.

I had been there a number of times until about 2005, never since. What a shocking difference. It's a mere shadow of what it once was.

Beautiful mall with beautiful skylights. Your mall videos never disappoint! The video shots of the beautiful water fountains and the beautiful music are the best features of you mall videos! When you do the video shot over the railings it so realistic that it looks like I am looking over the railings and I am going to get dizzy and fall over the railings. But I love it! You are doing an awesome job!!

This mall needs a redevelopment plan fast! SoNo Collection is now the dominant mall in the area. Taubman selling this property should have been the first warning sign.

I guess the SoNo Mall would be considered a "Galleria Mall ?? Xd

What a tall mall. Very cool design and the elevator is nice as well. Thanks for going on it and giving a great view from the top floor to the bottom.

@@RawRealRetail Ha, yeah, it almost sounds like a martial arts movie from the 80s. ;) Great name for a Chinese food place. Thanks again for the great historical Mall footage. I also like your appropriate choices of mall music too!

I grew up in the 80s - loved the malls. Used to make a special trip to this mall w/ a good friend every year for Christmas shopping. Then got a job in downtown stamford in 1998 - went to the place all the time even if it was just to walk around. It was always bustling, even on weekdays. My company, at the time, move from Stamford to South Norwalk in 2002/3 and I don’t think I’ve been to this mall since. Kinda sad to see what it’s turned into. Change is good, for the most part, but it’s hard to see places of my youth dying slow deaths.

That Macy’s is on the neighborhood store list! Which basically means it will probably close relatively soon. Which is a damn shame.....

A really well designed mall. Skylights and the fountain (may be more, I forget) are a nice touch. This another example once of once thriving mall that is just too big. Additionally there are just too many vacant stores. I’d close off the top floor all together. Problem though is that Macy’s is hanging by a thread. It has to be one of the 100 or so locations they are planning on closing. If that happens the inline stores will vacate for sure. It’s such a shame as I really like this mall. It’s just one of those properties that likely won’t make it any time soon.

The mall feels big, but it's on the smaller scale at just about 760,000 square feet. Most of the retail is on two main floors and the food court is in its own floor. I think the mall would still do okay if the sono collection wasn't a thing.

@@rl8429 I just checked out the Sono property website. With the roster of stores they have, this mall has a limited chance of success. So sad.

You can blame the shiny new mall in Norwalk for much of Stamford's woes.
