Adrian, I am nobody and a legend only in my younger mind..... 😂 I am having fun with the adventure and have found many things going back through older photos, these newer photos, different lenses.... etc. Working on comparing the Tamron 150-600 on the D850 and the Sony A7iii with the native 200-600. I am going shooting again tomorrow morning (sunrise and wildlife at Malibu lagoon) as the Santa Ana winds are too strong for me to ride. One thing I have found..... for snow and landscapes in general, my old D800 with my cheap & slow Nikon 24-85 is the king! Pure creamy magic.... to my eyes! Not to your caliber but working my way up! And then when I am done with this toy....... the Nikon Z7..... 😏 I am obsessing on it so I have a feeling it will be in my house soon! Love the internal histogram, but prefer the ... .and then... but this one....
Looking to move from a old Canon 7D. Stumped on the Sony a7R IV or the D850. What would you suggest for someone picking back up photography who takes landscape, wildlife, and some sports?
Thanks from a fellow cyclist, John. I’ve been having a hard time trying to decide between buying the D500 or going all out for the D850, you’ve just nudged me towards the D850. I only needed a very gentle nudge! Awesome images. 👍
Hi Peter Higgins! I just finished another video shooting with a new Sony 200-600 for birding. And..... I will say it again and again. Larger megapixels make a difference. The D850 is still and will be my main rig - low light, fast, amazing focus, old lenses are relatively inexpensive and plentiful... I could go on. Also, if you put in DX mode, you get the additional reach, but my thinking is why? Fill the frame and use every single bit of information. It is worth every penny! And thank you - comparing my D850 shots with the Sony ... no comparison! Nikon hands down for color and clarity.
Peter, one other thing. Mark Smith shoots and prefers his D850 over his Sonys and his D500. When he puts up the photos, there is a difference - D850 - worth the money!
Exceptional review John! I actually totally agree with you regarding your D850 as compared to the A7iii. Both great cameras but there is a warmth in DSLR’s, those close to D850 quality, that I just don’t see in the 7iii. Maybe the A7R IV might be closer, but 60+ megapixels, just too much. My sister has the D500 and I again agree with you that cropping in, say on birds, really shows a loss in detail. The only way I can describe it is some mirrorless and SSLR’s do lack character, the way cd’s compared to LP’s are too neutral. Sure I don’t miss the static and noise of LP’s but the ‘warmth’, the character, yeah that’s a different story. Beautiful photos, really enjoyed your review!
Bill... LPs.... warm and even with the pops and scratches, sound amazing! That is just my take on it..... and also why I prefer the D800. It is the warmest of all of my cameras by far. Thank you Bill!
Absolutely in agreement, sometimes I see ads for the sale of used mirrorless cameras with photographs of the camera without a cover and that sensor in sight, I always think, that must be full of dust eheheh
Hi Vitor Guimaraes! Absolutely. If you forget to turn the camera off when switching lenses, the charge on the sensor sucks up dust. Easy to clean with the internal or a rocket blower, but if you forget..... that dust could be at the wrong part of your photo and a problem later. It happens to all of us and to me, it is just one less thing to worry about. The ONLY thing I really like about a mirrorless is the EVF. I realize I may be a dying breed, but I prefer the eye piece over the backscreen except for some landscapes..... I will be a hold out and buy all the inexpensive used lenses when the other switch completely to mirrorless. LOL Thank you again Vitor Guimaraes.🙏💖
I have the opportunity to buy a very slightly used D800 for around $800 which I would use for landscape. Your observation that it is not as clear as the D850 concerns me. Do you still like the D800, or should I hold off to when the D850 becomes more affordable? Thank you. Love your videos!
Don S!!!! I still have and love my D800 but sadly, my sensor has spots so I am constantly cleaning the images. LOL. The truth is, ANY camera with the right lens can take amazing photos. Advice I got a long time ago and what you will here from any photographer who has been around a while - invest in glass. The pro level lenses are expensive because they are just that much better. Believe it or not, my favorite camera body right now is a discontinued Canon M50 - ruclips.net/video/2cdAWTpQaJY/видео.html that I reach for even over my Canon R5. I have since switched to Canon because Nikon was not and has not kept up with the rapid tech the others are putting out. I went with Canon over Sony because of the deep rich color. I recently took my D800 out and only shot a couple of shots with it - it is older and wearing out unfortunately. I know it is a workhorse, but even those have a lifespan. The D850 has a larger sensor and is a better camera with way more to offer..... but again, it is about the glass you put on there - that is where I would spend my money. And although 3rd party lens have become amazing for the newer cameras, for the older cameras like the D800 or D850, I would stick to native. Just my $0.02 and I hope it helps. ruclips.net/video/QZ-zD8V6kLY/видео.html ruclips.net/video/gfleDPGtRt0/видео.html
Nice one, Just sold all my old Nikon gear and moved to an A7iii, I've only had it for a month or so but I feel there is something missing in the image quality, I will persevere till the summer but my gut feeling is I'll be moving back to Nikon. I only shoot landscapes mainly so I was thinking along the lines of a second hand D810. I was previously a DX shooter (inc the D500 which I hated).
Hi Mark Gilmour! Well, I bought this in hopes of well..... I dont know. I know EXACTLY what you mean about something missing. My very favorite set up for shooting landscapes is my old D800 (cheap on eBay) and an old Nikon 24-85 that has dust inside. There is a depth and warmth that just wows ME every time I develop my photos in lightroom. If you have not seen it, this is from a couple of weeks ago with that set up - ruclips.net/video/Q_8QDMdnThE/видео.html Death Valley last March also. Until it dies, it is my landscape set up.... and portraits too if I have control of my light. The 500 is a great camera for birding but not landscapes in my opinion. And as far as DX - the older stuff still has a warmth to it..... ruclips.net/video/ZwqRoD3YxC4/видео.html and this too .... ruclips.net/video/1YmTSYDHGoE/видео.html ..... and this.... LOL ruclips.net/video/2K4-Cc9Um0w/видео.html My Sony will be for astrophotography only going forward.
i m not surprised. I have a a7iii for video, though.. it's a dud for that as well. shooting 8 bit 4:2:0.. but hey different story. The D850 is the greatest full frame camera ever made, hands down. it is, what it is. But the d800e (the e!!) for landscapes is magical. and cheap as fuck. beats the a7iii any day of the week.
Juventin - I am a Sony video guy - I use a dedicated Sony video camera - that is, until the D780 that borrows from the D780. All my most recent music videos have been shot with the D780. It is...... amazing. If you combined the D780 with the D850, it would be the best DSLR ever made. I have been meaning to make a comparison video of the video qualities between the two in terms of auto focus (the D780 is amazing and that is something I never would have said about Nikon for video, and clarity. I will get to it. And still in 99% of my stills.... I go for the D800! 😁
me 2 found sony files to have somewhat of a digital look to it. Maybe it's the lens, maybe it's the color, I just coouldn't tell exactly what is causing the issue. Both my Leica m and canon EOS-R files look more organic, is the best way I can put it. It's not about mirrorless vs DSLR, it's the sensor in inside.
Hi Jimmy!!! Organic - that is PERFECT. My D800 is still my favorite for landscapes because of the "organic" look that old sensor has. I is missing some of the clarity of the D850 and the 780, but no matter what lens I put on there, the raw files just have a creamy look I LOVE for me. Digital is also a great way to describe Sony for landscapes. I use my Sony now ONLY for astrophotgraphy because I like what it does with the blacks and grays for that only. I did not like the Sony for events either. I may at some point buy either the newest Canon RA or newest Sony, but either would strictly for astro. Thank you Jimmy for putting it so perfectly! ruclips.net/video/JA6KkwtixgY/видео.html
HI DrSnuggles22. Well, I don't like Sony for landscapes.... or anything photo related than astrophotography. Video to me is where Sony shines the best. I did try using The Sony for an event and was disappointed in most of the photos from that camera - since it was a back up that I only shot with for a while to check it out, it was no big deal. I don't like the way the Sony's process black and they seem pretty consistent across all their cameras with that. It is almost like it is crushed into the raw file like color is baked into a JPEG. My old D800.... - it is not quite as sharp as the 850 or even the A7Riii even with my best lenses, but it has a warmth to it that the others do not for landscapes - and portraits. The old Nikon D3200 has that same warmth as well that I like for landscapes and clouds. It is my preference just as some people rave about Canon because of the color or Panasonic or.... it is all preference. And what I noticed with this Sony that I bought just to see how much it had changed since I had the 6500, it that it has not changed at all. I was still as disappointed with their color processing. I spent more time in Lightroom trying to make it look like a Nikon photo. Don't get me wrong - I LOVE the EVF and seeing everything right in the view finder is so much better, but the rest to me (and for my taste) just leaves too much to be desired. I am old school and like the viewfinder and when Nikon's mirrorless has evolved, I MAY switch. And as for comparing the 850 to the A7Riii - there would be no comparison - to me the 850 would be where I would go. To me, there is more to a photo and photography than just how clear it is - it has to have personality and make me happy. If I was hired for a job and asked to make look like something other than what I see as my style for events, I would not take the job. Just my $0.02! 😁 Thank you DrSnuggles22
Oh and thank you sooo much for the shout out my friend, you’re a legend 🤙
