Um.. okay.. 1. LIthium iron phosphate batteries are called LiFe batteries for short, not LiPo which refers to lithium polymer cells. Different type of battery. 2. Watts are watts. If you motor is producing 1 horsepower, then it is producing 746 watts of power by definition - same measurement, different units. Plus accounting for efficiency, if this is a brushless motor then you may be running in the 85% or so range, so you would be drawing about 875 watts or so from the battery or 36.5A of current per horsepower, or about 66A at 1.8hp. Wait a minute. Is your display reading amps not watts? The indicator says "W" though.
Thanks for the video. You made some really misleading comments. This unit still needs a 24 volt battery to work correct? When compared apples to apples this unit with a lifepo4 24 volt battery will be in the 1800 range which is roughly $300 more than a Bixpy with the same adapter plate. Not to mention a lot heavier with a 24 volt lifepo4 battery (or 2-12 volts). I'm glad to see more competition in the market. I don't like misleading videos/comments. Keep it real sir.
thx for the feedback. i mentioned you could have a motor setup with 2 35ah 12v deep cycle lead acid batteries plus the NK-180S for half the cost of a competing model, that happen to require proprietary lipo packs. of course if you want a 1:1 comparison, you'd be spending similar money to add a true 24v lipo or LiFePO4 to the NK. no intent to mislead at all, rather illustrate how this system isn't a closed system and let's you have considerable power with basic power options to start👍🏼
Happy to see you guys dappling with the electrified kayaks. Your RUclips presence bring info to the masses and get them thinking of the possibilities. I bet Haswing is the OEM and Newport likely combining a kayak mount with a brushless motor and bringing it to the market. If you use lithium, do use the LIFEPO4 chemistry. That’s safest and still have all the advantages in lightweight, power density and longevity. It usually has 3000+ lifecycle versus about 500 or less for the heavy lead acid battery. Also, the capacity of lead acid is usually less because if you draw the voltage down and use 50% of the power, you shorten its life. You should showcase a 50-60 mah 24v lifepo4 should give the same runtime as the two 100mah 12v lead acid but at much lessor weight and size. There’s so much content you can make on all this topic during the fishing season downtime.
I've considered this because pedal drives cost about $1500. The reason I won't is because I can't mount enough solar on my kayak to power the motor. I tend to spend long days on the water and carrying more than one battery on a kayak is just not an option.
There are 746 watts in one Horse Power. The 417 Watts you were drawing at 5 mph is a bit over 1/2 HP. Did you ever notice the wattage draw on full throttle from a dead stop? I would venture to guess it doesn't peak over 746 watts or 1 HP.
Facts, however with electric motors, current draw is directly related to load. I'd imagine if it were on a very heavy kayak it would draw more. Lastly I'm pretty sure they call it a 1.8hp equivalent, not actually 1.8hp

Pretty neat setup! Too bad in the state of Missouri ANY motorized boat - including trolling motors(!) - must be fully registered as a boat in the state. So, if I added something like this to my kayak I would have to go through the pain of registering my kayak as a boat…
I’m a noob to batteries but Question: If was to purchase a (1)Lithium Battery (thinking of purchasing Dakota Lithium) for this motor, what volts/AH battery should I purchase?
you'd need a 24v battery, or be willing to run 2 12v in parallel. Newport Vessels is coming out with their own 25.9v lifepo4 battery in the summer, should be a perfect match👍🏼
Dude. I give you three thumbs up for sharing this great idea . It is so simple and cheap, that I was kicking my ass for not thinking of this myself. Now , I’m thinking of a new project, but similar.
I run a 30 pound thrust Minn Kota Enduro with a 20Ah Duracell dry cell. Installed a $20 in line PWM speed controller and I get about 4 hours of battery life. $80 for the Minnkota sure beats $1,000 for the NK-180S. Way too expensive. Be well, fish on.
I would totally buy it but then I have to register my kayak with the DMV...and I think they now make you purchase insurance if you motorize your vessel...
Registered my Outback last October and no insurance required. You will need to have a sales receipt (don't want the DMV to charge you sales tax again!) or a bill of sale. I called my dealer and they sent me a copy - I only had the faded cash register receipt. Also, you will need a manufactures statement of origin, which Hobie supplied me. Lastly, you will need to fill out the DMV Boat Form 101, which you can download and complete online and print out. Now, here is the tricky part if your DMV office has not dealt with a kayak registration: There is a section on the form that you check regarding how the vessel is powered, which includes an alternative fuel box. Leave it blank. My DMV tried to charge $298 (wtf!!!!), but I politely said HELL NO, that the fees should be less than $60. They said they would contact Sacramento the next morning and get back to me. Next morning they called and said come in that the fee was only 50ish dollars. I think I paid $47 which included the two year $20 fee. So, my boat is good to go until 12/31/21. My Certificate of Registration arrived in a week. If your local DMV is confused, ask them to call Sacramento. Hope this helps. PS - Go to Newport Vessels website as they have a section that basically tells you what the fees should be.
correct. if it's locked it won't move, same as traditional trolling motors or outboards. its to keep it from popping up when you hit reverse hard, which it does!
@ishwithfish can you lock the motor facing forward? i'm looking at getting the slayer max and i think i would have to use this motor in conjunction with the handle controlled rudder.
sure can! according to their website "Steering cables can be setup to turn the motor like a rudder using your kayaks OEM mounted foot braces, or a pin can lock the motor in a forward drive position for use on SUPs and inflatable kayaks."
Nice, would be better if they had various options for the depth. I would want mine about 3" below the surface. That would depend on the load in the kayak too. I would be good with 3" unloaded, and whatever that is full load, maybe 4". Just not 1.5'.
Put the Newprt 160 on my Titan 10.5 last week, and even with all the gear, me, and the 60 amp 24 volt battery, was going over 4.7 miles per hour (my Titan and gear weighs about 175 to 180 pounds, and I weigh right around 200 pounds. The 20 amp battery and 9" Garmin weigh another 25 pounds). The 'Yak is only rated for 500 pounds, so I guess I'm alright. Couldn't be Happier with any other 'Yak motor! (Can't wait 'til my Titan X 12.5 gets here, along with the Newport 300 Drive!...!). Lol
ikr! i think Torqueedo skimmed the market while they could, everyone else has finally caught up and pricing these fairly now. you could outfit 3 yaks with 3 of these for the cost of 1 high end Torqueedo unit.
@@ishwithfish I like your enthusiasm but with an equal lithium battery this unit is would be in the 1500 range. A 3hp Torqueedo 1103A is 3000 delivered not 4500.
Very informative and helpful video! I have a 2016 Big Rig that I'm looking to add a TM to and I think this might be what I need. I'm 61 years old and paddling for miles on the river is getting to be too much for me.
If you put a motor on a kayak, you will have to register it and pay a fee. In California a new kayak at $879 will cost you about $80. Then you will need to paint the number they give you on the kayak.
Technically you can pull that motor all the way to the shaft, not by the string but with your hand, tie it to something to hold it during transport so it doesn't stick out.
true. if i drive far, i just unmount the motor and secure it under the yak seat. the motor mount just locks in place with a bike wheel skewer, very easy to take off.
@@ishwithfish Unlocking the entire motor with the black plastic mount portion yes, but if you take your hand, and move the motor shaft itself forward until the motor hits the black mounting piece then it'll be tucked in without removing the entire unit. Hard to describe but I'm able to do that on my outback, and clip it to one of the tie down loops.
In some states no, in some states yes. I'm in CA so motorized vessels require registration, notice the stickers and CF numbers at beginning of the video👍
I want one! Tried for halibut off the shore today… nada… haven’t taken the Hobie out much at all. And I do have 15 foot Ocean Kayak I think will work well with one of these!

You gotta solar power it, that would be amazing. There is a guy who works on ebikes and he helped his dad solar power his kayak. I'll find you the link for his video. 😁👍
the mini max 12v are less than half the size of normal marine trolling battery, so qty 2 is a little smaller than your usual marine battery. the point being you have lots of options to power this motor, not tied to a proprietary battery like other brands.
I run a 45 lb. thrust minkota. With a 12 volt car battery and roll up solar panel for under $400 on my jon boat. That’s for brand new. If I do a little Craig’s list surfing, I can get the cost down to $150 dollars used motor and car battery out of my pickup. Instead of turning battery in for core charge refund. I just replace the battery in my truck long before it goes bad. I get 2-3 years out of a used battery. And forget about a charge controller. Everything is just a manual toggle switch to run and an electricians tool to check the charge rate and capacity. A tool I already own for fixing my house and car electronics.
Recently got the NK 180 (There is no "S" model anymore) The speed control seems to be analog not digital, meaning it goes in steps, not in variable increments of 1%. Mines is flat out at 60% on the controller, rpm does not increase moving beyond this level. Also, it does not start as soon as you move the throttle from zero, it moves almost 20% before the motor even engages and it is very hard to set it for an exact % of your choice. Still better than a ridiculously overpriced Torqeedo, but I am thinking I would have saved a lot of money going with a 24v trolling motor and moding it to mount in the rear myself. Hopefully this motor has enough for me to fish upriver in my local rivers, but I see Newport just launched a new 3hp kayak motor that will kick ass, but unfortunately, its 36v which is not ideal. We will see what 2023 brings.

@@KidBako ty! great info
If you keep the reverse lock engaged the motor won't kick up if you strike an object?
correct. if it's locked it won't move, same as traditional trolling motors or outboards. its to keep it from popping up when you hit reverse hard, which it does!
Riddle me this....what happens to the throttle controller after a roll over??????
Luv'n this!
Gahh! I've been wanting something like this for a long time.
Just not 1.5'.
you can adjust depth, there's a collar you tighten to set shaft height👍🏼
Ya have an updated one year review video? Am thinking about getting one.
Hey Nick Fish! This is the Tesla of Kayaks!
Lol
Is that a Doug Demuro reference in the beginning?
Man that’s way cheaper! A torquedo is like $2500
ikr! i think Torqueedo skimmed the market while they could, everyone else has finally caught up and pricing these fairly now. you could outfit 3 yaks with 3 of these for the cost of 1 high end Torqueedo unit.
@@ishwithfish absolutely I’m glad I waited
@@ishwithfish I like your enthusiasm but with an equal lithium battery this unit is would be in the 1500 range. A 3hp Torqueedo 1103A is 3000 delivered not 4500.
Very informative and helpful video! I have a 2016 Big Rig that I'm looking to add a TM to and I think this might be what I need. I'm 61 years old and paddling for miles on the river is getting to be too much for me.
np hope it helps!
If you put a motor on a kayak, you will have to register it and pay a fee. In California a new kayak at $879 will cost you about $80. Then you will need to paint the number they give you on the kayak.
You sounded like Doug Demuro! Especially with your intro.
hopefully I covered all the quirks and features lol
How is that compare against the Motorguide xi3
Now we need a drag race video against all the Old Town kayak boys! 😂
"i live my life one 24 volt at a time..."
Ish will walk on the 12V boys.
Draws too much water for most kayak back-water areas........
This is great for my obese friends!
dmann, mike😂😂
It’s pulling 25a without a load!??
WoooooHoooooo 5 MPH? 😟
*with crab pots going downhill
Great kayak! Good control. Good for beginners. You will get wet paddling. Universal scupper plugs fit this kayak.
You should go race nick fish and his old town. $800 bucks verses $4,000. Lol
anytime Nick! i live my life one quarter mile at a time...
@@ishwithfish is their any discount for IQ fishing rods?
This is great and all, but powered water vessels require registration, numbers on hull, etc.
In some states no, in some states yes. I'm in CA so motorized vessels require registration, notice the stickers and CF numbers at beginning of the video👍
@@ishwithfish Just saying for viewers, not you. Kansas yes, Florida yes, Oklahoma yes...
States want the revenue...lol..
@@eiserntorsphantomoftheoper2154 haha yup esp CA!
I want one! Tried for halibut off the shore today… nada… haven’t taken the Hobie out much at all. And I do have 15 foot Ocean Kayak I think will work well with one of these!
I have a quick question Ish. Can I use this motor without the stearing and just use the rotor on my hobie compass @IshWithFish?
yup! motor has a fixed position config if you want to steer with rudder or paddle.
Thanks for asking this question, I have a Titan and I was wondering the same thing.
Sooo..a boat
pretty much lol
I have a native slayer max 12.5, I’m still trying to figure out if it will work if I lock the motor and use steering handle ?
hi, yes, per NV the Native Slayer Max 12.5 will fit. here's a link to the NK-180S kayak compatibility guidestonly.com/sl/en/623ea50f-3570-437c-945c-261aa89ed378/Steps/126261, they'll have an updated version of this on the NV website in March.
This is exactly what I wanted to know. I have a titan 13.5. I would want to lock the motor and use my rudder to steer
That's a lower priced version of a Torqeedo
Top muito bom!
Dude what a great idea!
Got $50 discount. Thanks Ish, hope to see you out there someday.
awesome! good luck with chrome this season
I love my nk-180 with the exception of the throttle controller. Going from a remote controlled motor to the lever style was a downgrade for me.
did anyone catch the red fish at 8:56? bottom left hand corner?
Sun reflecting off the lens.
@ish do you have to register the boat once you have this installed?
yup, in california you have to register any motorized vessel👍🏼
You gotta solar power it, that would be amazing. There is a guy who works on ebikes and he helped his dad solar power his kayak. I'll find you the link for his video. 😁👍
awesome, please do!
@@ishwithfish I found it, it's from the ebikeschool channel ruclips.net/video/DNtvwc6kk_s/видео.html 😎👍
@@williamaungleyraud sweet! will check it out👍🏼
It takes ''2'' giant marine batteries???
the mini max 12v are less than half the size of normal marine trolling battery, so qty 2 is a little smaller than your usual marine battery. the point being you have lots of options to power this motor, not tied to a proprietary battery like other brands.
This is my second kayak of this model. It's a very nice and very well built kayak.
Lmao thought I was watching Doug Demuro for a sec
next video i'll show you the quirks and features😁
Just got mine yesterday and I got the discount. Thank you Ish!
👌🏽
what top speeds are you getting?
I avg 5 mph top speed on my featured yak setup👍
Recently got the NK 180 (There is no "S" model anymore)
The speed control seems to be analog not digital, meaning it goes in steps, not in variable increments of 1%.
I wonder why they would not make it more controllable.. btw if you ever need lithium batteries for 12/24/36v I build them at half the price of a Dakota lithium. My main work is building electric mx bike conversions. Batteries are my deal!
Discount still works! Got mine today.
right on, enjoy!
You're near Cal Canoe & Kayak for this demo. Nice.
yup! i used to go there when they were by REI in san carlos too.
746 watts in a horse power, not sure who's leg the are trying to pull.
Is this motor safe for saltwater?
I just got installing one on my Hobie 360. Can't wait to try it on the water
awesome, have fun!
Newport makes great stuff! I’ve had my Dana for 5-6 years now.
agreed! they put all their trolling motor experience into this unit too, very happy with it so far👍🏼
Cuda HD is no longer made.
thx, tbh after putting 25-30 hours on it, it kinda sucks lol. quick with motor but it's tippy, even with battery for ballast.
