Approaching The Scene 210: Glacier National Park + Ways To Expand Your Photography

- (LINKS BELOW): Here’s another update from Glacier National Park. (@GlacierNPS) While Rick and I wait for bears, we’ll talk a bit about Glacier National Park as well as the practice of photography and how gear is a tool. Like any other set of tools, different types of photo gear enable different artistic possibilities for photographers who learn to use it well through practice.

04:31 I shoot with a lot of cameras from a GoPro and Z50s to Z9 and Q2
05:30 Sometimes you want big heavy gear, but often you don’t
06:20 A fixed focal length can change the way you think
07:31 Black and white photography in the middle of the day
08:40 Small prime lens cameras opened new ways of seeing for me
11:35 You don’t need a Leica or even a different camera to try this
14:00 The camera or brand makes very little difference. It’s a tool
18:30 You have a camera, the key is how to use it more creatively
19:00 A good prime lens is an affordable way to get out of a rut
19:50 For Nikon fans, the Z9 is new and exciting. There will be more…

“It’s the light that really matters.” Enough said.
The light and the practice.
The Leica Q2 is a great addition to your bag. How cool!!
Beautiful place. Last time I was there, i was chased by a moose and crossed paths with a huge grizzly. I loved the west side and it's open expanse, and beautiful skies. Now I am living in India and the landscape is completely different. Glad you are living your passion
As I continue on my journey to become a better photographer, I work on trying to see light better. Whether it's natural conditions or using artificial lighting. Then compositions. Then, understanding when to use the best focal length for the intended results. The last one, is probably the most subjective. All those concepts are really, but you get the point. I'm a Nikon Shooter. I have made favorite images, whether it was on a D5300, a D850 ( which is my favorite, until I can get a Z9 I imagine) or a Z6, even a camera phone. My love of gear bleeds into my other interests too. Modern camera gear is so good, now if you can't get great results from any system, it's the user. I have gravitated towards primes, and I feel like that has forced me to slow down and think a little more in many situations. One lens I picked up recently in order to feed the creative bug, is the Voigtlander 58mm f1.4 in f - mount. Its a manual lens. I used it recently on a portrait shoot and I loved the results.
Photographers have an equipment obsession. Shoot with what you can afford/enjoy and don’t worry about the rest
Loved the video, reckon you guys could talk about anything and we'd listen. Have never been to Glacier, living in Ireland, but it's on my list for sure.
The cheap Z 28 mm f2.8 lens is another great lens. It is small and lightweight with very good IQ. It couples well with any of the Z cameras including the Z50. On the Z50 it becomes a 42 mm lens which great as a general walk around lens. Highly recommended!
I have reviewed and raved about it on the Z50. It's corners are not stellar on the Z7 or 9 sensors, but it is fabulous in the middle. great street lens.
Always enjoy listening to you guys riffing on all things photography! I’ve gotta make it back to Glacier some day!
Love the message in this video.
Glad to see you have your bear spray handy. I took a 5-day backpacking trip in Glacier's Two Medicine backcountry about 7-years ago. Rained every day and the mosquitoes were horrendous, but still a great adventure. One of my favorite National Parks because it feels so wild compared to the other NPs in the lower 48, IMO. Glad you had a good time in Glacier!
I will be the first to admit that I suffer from "GAS" -- Gear Acquisition Syndrome, and believe that while cameras may come & go, there is no real substitute for great glass.
Having said that, I am also a firm believer in what I "affectionately" call the 95/5 rule. 95% of what makes an image great happens 5 inches behind the viewfinder.
Gear doesn’t matter as long as a you are using the Nikon mirrorless system :). I got caught up in the GAS and had a ton of F mount lenses and my beloved D850 which I said I would never sell. Well, I just sold it and my remaining F mount glass. I now have a Z6, Z6II, and 5 native lenses that serve me really well. I am stoked to have paired my kit down to what I actually use and no more. And it fits perfectly in my Atlas pack and I have the Leofoto/Acratech setup and its golden!
??? What microphones were you using? ... They sounded great. The road noise was subtle while your voice had outstanding tone well able to talk over the traffic. ... Made a great video. Enjoy your adventure.
Rode Go II which (excuse the pun) are my go to. :-) bhpho.to/3C0KmhJ
It’s funny, I was giving very serious thought into getting a Q2 before I opted for the Z7ii. If I was still living in NYC, the former would’ve edged it, but as I now live in CO, the Z7ii made more sense. Would still love to own a Q2M - or any Leica for that matter, at some point though. 👍👍
I live 170 miles South East of Glacier. 💪🏻 Small town of Anaconda.
Last time I was there, we drove leisurely up the "going to the sun" road and my daughter saw her first snow. Now I hear there are only certain times you can drive up and it is extremely crowded. Not for me now!
It's not bad up high and on the many glaciers side, particularly midweek. Thankfully they do limit the traffic, which helps on the weekends. It's how the parks are now. Besides, as photograpghers we enter in the dark before the gates open, leave marveling at the hoards lined up to get in and go back in at dinner hour as the hoards are leaving. It's fun to be on that reverse commute. :)
I was there two weeks ago and you had to have a reservation to get into the park before 5:00pm. It is a way of trying to cut down on the sheer volume of traffic. After 5:00pm we could enter with no reservation but we had to be out by 10:00pm. Not much time but by Sep those restrictions will be gone and the park will be virtually empty. If you are planning to go try not to go during peak season (June through Aug). Personally I would go in the Spring when there will be much more snow. Well worth a visit.
I have a canon D7 mark ii , what lense is a good one to use. I have a Tamron 18 to 400 3.5 but i was looking to buy a sigma 60 to 600 . Would that lense work well with my camera and would it be to heavy to take hiking. What do you take hiking.
I'm a big 100-400 fan. Canon has a VERY nice one. The longer range zooms always have major sacrifices. Sony, Canon and Nikon have fabulous 100-400 F4s. I ditched my Nikon 70-200 2.8 the 100-400 is so good. I was jealous of Canon's for a long time before Nikon's arrived. :-)
