    I know some of these are a bit controversial, but I want you all to know that everything presented here is from the heart. We don't want to see anyone who wants to start the rv life, be held back by thinking that they need to spend MORE money on these things just to get started. The truth is you don't need much, just the basics really. That's what I LOVE about this lifestyle 😊

    KLEEN TANK BLACK TANK CLEANING SOLUTION RECIPE:
    Mix eight ounces of Calgon bath beads and 40 ounces of PINE-SOL® in a one-gallon jug. Fill the jug with water. Shake gently and allow any foam to settle down. Use four to eight ounces in each tank, every time you have emptied them.

    • @kitbaker1629

      Since we're allergic to pine we use 1capful of liquid calgon and 2 capfuls of liquid gain in 2 gal water after every dump. Works for us. On a long boondocks in hot climate did have to flush down a teaspoon scent booster beads, that fixed that.

    On one of our trips we picked up a screw in a tire on our trailer and I was unaware that it was losing air as we drove. It wasn’t until we made a sharp turn that I could see that the tire was just about flat. Luckily it hadn’t separated and blown apart yet. I always check the pressure and condition before a trip and when we stop but no amount of pre trip inspection or a pressure gauge could predict an incident while driving. I still do the usual checks but we now use a TPMS to alert if something develops on the road. The $200 was a lot cheaper than it would be to repair damage caused by a shredded tire. I also carry a 12 volt compressor and some tire plugs.

      @ladikmk 2 месяца назад +2

      Yes, if you're rv-ing you need to do your walk around inspection every time you get on the road, but what if the weather is bad and you end up missing something with the tires? There are some things you can't put a cost on, and I personally think this is one of them. I do agree that this can be life saving because blow-outs can have deadly consequences and/or cause very expensive repairs to your RV's undercarriage.

      I think it's what you feel comfortable with. My husband is very knowledgeable when it come to vehicles and so just using a tire pressure gauge would be enough for him along with checking the tires etc. However if it were me in charge I don't know enough so I would want a tire monitor. My husband and I are planning on living full time in an RV next year and I do watch a lot of RV videos. I understand what she means about pushing products. Some RUclipsrs get paid to push a product and others just have been on the road for a while and they have found certain things that work for them. It's all good : )

      @ladikmk My husband has worked highly skilled transportation jobs all his life, his experience and knowledge offer better safety and peace of mind than any electronic device out there. Could he miss something? Sure, but so could a TPMS. Their not fool proof, there are things a human being can pick up on that a TPMS never will. As far as bad weather, if the weather is bad are you going to skip the pre trip inspection and depend on a computer? I think it's very dangerous to believe that machines and computers can do things better than the humans that created them. A TPMS will not prevent a blowout, that needs to be abundantly clear. I must confess, maybe we cheat a little...before EVERY single trip we pray a prayer of protection over our travel and the safety of everyone else on the roads with us. 🤷🏼‍♀️☺️

      I think what will primarily influence this decision is how many days per year you spend in your RV/Travel trailer. The majority of weekender types will get by fine with inspecting their tires and checking inflation levels manually before each road trip. If you live in your RV for large parts of the year... Get the TPMS.

    • @MakingMyAbodeOTR

    TPMS has saved my butt three times in the last 6 years while driving down the road saving my tires. Haven't had a blowout. And yes I inspect the tires before every tow. I have a ryobi air compressor that stays in the truck and if I need to pump up the tires it is easy to do. The TPMS isn't any different than the tire monitors on your vehicles. Do you check the pressure in those tires before you drive every time? No you rely on that system to warn you.
    Also love my icemaker. I spend a day making two or three big ziplock bags and keep them in a Dollar Tree basket in the freezer. I fill a bowl from them that sits on top of the bags and is easy to reach into to get ice. They aren't for keeping on the counter making ice constantly Those three bags last me a couple of weeks.

    • @MakingMyAbodeOTR
      @MakingMyAbodeOTR  2 месяца назад

      @mur6822 ABSOLUTELY not! We do not rely on the built in tpms in our tow vehicle WHATSOEVER. We check them with every single trip as part of our pre trip inspection. Never, ever, ever should you rely on any tpms to tell you your air pressure!

    I personally want to take out an oven and put in the convenient oven/microwave option. Takes up less space. I know my toaster oven/air fryer is something that is a must for me. But the RV ovens I don't find them worth the trouble they're small and put out a lot of heat. I know the rig I want is going to be $200k. So figured if I can't really decorate them I'm splurging on things like am amazing fridge and freezer, microwave/oven. My goal is to get in a Noovo in 10 years or I might be luckier enough to get it in 5 years.

    TPMS saved me from an RV blow out from Las Vegas to CA. Tires with perfect pressure upon leaving, 1.5 hours into the trip TPMS alerted me to low pressure allowing me to stop at a station rather than being stuck in area whereas there was no immediate help. 110 weather with two dogs, a flat or a blow out would have been a nightmare. Ended up being a valve stem issue on brand new tires. Also, had a blow out with my SUV after TPMS went bad, had TPMS warned me I would have been saved a blow out on a busy CA freeway. TPMS a lifesaver from my experience.

    Thank for your insights and I’ve come to agree on most. However, I have to say that our inexpensive TPMS (less than $100) has absolutely saved us from blowouts at least three times over the past four years and 45,000+ miles. Each time the TPMS has alerted us to rapid air loss and gave us plenty of time to safely pull over without having the tire disintegrate and cause significant damage to our rig. I do wholeheartedly agree that TPMS doesn’t replace regular manual inspections and pressure checks. I do this at every stop for gas and we still had the misfortune of having three flat tires while going down the road.

    • @rui1863
      @rui1863 Месяц назад +1

      I would agree; I've had only a few flats tires in my 30+ years of driving. When the front tire goes, it's very noticeable; however, rear tires are not as pronounced. I can only imagine that a flat on a trailer would be even much less noticeable especially with a dual axle trailer. A TPMS system is something you hope to never need and is simply an insurance policy to limit or avoid the damage from a flat tire. Monitoring and checking you tires is great; but that won't catch the nail/debris that just punctured the trailer tire.

    Hello from central Colorado, Leigh Ann love this video. Your TP comment, yes you can test out your favorite TP. Place two sheets of paper in glass jar with 1 cup of water, shake well. If the paper shreds it’s usable in black tank. Waste of money buying RV TP. I like Calgon tip. I did buy a pizza stone for our oven, the first one cracked. Found a better one at thrift store.
    Black tank story…….. came back from 6 days of boondocking on our son’s property in Westcliff. We stop to do the black tank flush, hubby puts clear elbow on, connects sewer hose. He pulls the sewer black tank lever, “HOLLY CRAP”, suddenly the elbow falls off. Brown crappy liquid gushes out. I thought, oh no the hose has failed. Well it turns out the clear elbow was not attached completely. Thank god we did have water hose ready, I was able to spray bleach and water to dilute the mess. Lesson learned double check connection. Safe travels.

    I have to disagree with you on the TPMS. Sadly, a pre-trip inspection is not enough because, for example, you can hit something, pick up a screw, or throw a thread while driving after your pre-trip or even mid-trip inspection. Is a TPMS foolproof or a replacement for pre- and mid-trip tire inspections? No; however, it is, undoubtedly, a must have safety item.

    Totally disagree on the TPMS well except for you don't have to buy a $300 one you can get a real nice one that works great for $70. A TPMS is not designed to prevent normal maintenance and inspection before travel. When you're towing four trailer tires and one blows out and you don't feel it, you don't know that you've had it because you don't have a TPMS it can do a lot of damage or worse.

    • @MakingMyAbodeOTR
      @MakingMyAbodeOTR  2 месяца назад +1

      @Hobiecat181 First I want to say, I would NEVER recommend buying a tpms at such a low price point. You get what you pay for and for people who want a tpms, and the reasons they want it, it needs to be a high quality product! There's no way you'll NOT be able to feel a blow out. That is incredibly misleading and a very dangerous idea to put out there. 1. Your trailer will feel different immediately 2. You'll likely hear it even with the radio on 3. You should see it if you're paying attention and regularly looking in your mirrors.

      @@MakingMyAbodeOTR well, the TPMS that I purchased is a Tymate RV Version it's actually quite good. It has a lot of very good reviews. I do agree with you that it is very possible that you will feel a blowout, but it is also possible that you won't. I know this because it happened to us. We had a blowout and a passing car pointed back. I never felt it and it did a bunch of damage to the underside of my trailer.. If I would've had a TPMS, maybe possibly I could've stopped in time before the damage. Like I said, it is no replacement for visually checking your tires before after and during your travels.

      Hobiecat, I looked into the Tymate that you stated and bought one. I had a blow out on camper and did not feel it at all but the alarm went off and my wife couldn't read it fast enough as pressure went down to 0. I was on a state highway and going 55. I just put the system on so I did check the tires/pressures just before leaving the house. I have a F350 with a just a 27' trailer so it pulls like I'm not even pulling anything. So thanks for mentioning the Tymate system. BTY The trip before I got the Tymate I arrived home with a flat- and did not know it.-- lucky was not completely flat but read less then 10 PSI. And yes, some of our trucks have them and they constantly go out and give you false readings. You definitely need to pay attention to your vehicle. I do clean his boxes everyday to avoid any smells for him and me. They also have the dry toilet (not really economical but does seem pretty cool. You can’t use a tire pressure gauge while driving. I picked up a screw while driving through Colorado Springs and my TPMS warned me in time for me to get off the road and find a good place to stop before the tire was totally flat. If I didn’t have my TPMS, I would not only have destroyed the tire, but would have ruined the rim. Instead I was able to just put on my spare. Should you always do an inspection prior to driving - absolutely.

      @@gardnetbush9768 I found a video that I think you may be referring to and it was not done by the same creator I mentioned. Just want that to be clear...however the test the guy did was interesting but in my opinion flawed and likely biased. For example he used a well known tank treatment that often sponsors rv RUclips channels. Not only that dog food isn't the best choice for mimicking solids because it floats, whereas human feces do not. At the end of the video I didn't notice much of a difference between both test tanks and he confirmed my observation by saying so. Another thing is that he used bath pearls as opposed to the bath beads which are significantly cheaper and dissolve much faster. Kleen Tank recommends the bath pearls, but has said the bath beads will also do. The biggest takeaway from his test is the importance of using PLENTY of water, which Kleen Tank also drives home. All I know is it has worked for us and it's a worth a try considering the high cost of these products.

    don't buy rubber gloves but get these rubber gloves instead.
    I think you need to understand what the gloves are made from, how to size correctly and where they are best used. there are so many different glove types and sizes that it is easily to become confused and overwhelmed. while the heavy rubber glove you use is a good long-term choice, for some people, a cheap box gets the job done when correctly identified. another issue of these gloves is the way you are storing them in a sealed box, it allows for bacterial growth, and it is something you cannot see until it reaches a dangerous level.
    understanding why you are getting into travelling and camping is very important. this knowledge should then govern any other purchases you make. a caravan/travel trailer/towable will be different to a class A/C/B or even tent camping.

The whole point of this video in my opinion is if you are starting out to live on the road DON'T feel like you have to run out and buy all kinds of stuff. She even tells us to give it some time to see what you may or may not need. I can see my husband having a pair gloves that he may reuse for the black tank. It is true you have to be careful with the bacteria however most people wash their hands after even though they wore gloves.

    You are absolutely wrong about not having a TPS, you are lucky so far you haven’t had a flat on one of the inner dual tires while rolling down the road. I always do a visual inspection while we’re parked but how can you monitor your tires while driving? A few hundred dollars for piece of mind while driving to protect my expensive toy is well worth, someday you will wish you had a heads up on a low tire.

    • @MakingMyAbodeOTR
      @MakingMyAbodeOTR  2 месяца назад

      @justanotherguy7798 First of all, I don't believe in luck. Luck comes from lucifer. Second, tires can be monitored while driving down the road by simply being aware of your surroundings and defensive driving. I can look in my mirrors and see 👀 if my tire is low. There is absolutely ZERO need to constantly be aware of exact tire pressure and tire temperature. Both of which constantly fluctuate based on a number of factors. As I said in the video, if it brings you peace of mind, great go for it... you do you, but for us, it's unnecessary, and here's why... blah blah blah. I find it ridiculous that people get so offended and defensive about their TPMS. This attitude is what's wrong with America these days. Too many sensitive Sally's who just can't stand that someone has a different opinion or different experience! I don't have a problem with people who use them, and I don't criticize them either. I want people to do what they think is best for them with information from both perspectives. And what a terrible thing to say... "someday you will wish you had a heads up on a low tire" ... what is that supposed to mean?! Are you HOPING something terrible happens and we'll change our evil, non tpms using ways?! Wth? Get out of here with that crap! If you want a tpms go for it.

I agree with snap pads. Move on, we’re convinced. RV TP is a waste of money. Black tank treatment is a toss up. Home made Surfactant recipes abound. BUY GOOD GLOVES and they won’t break. I see no point in hauling around used gloves that you used to protect you, and then storing them in your RV. You have to handle them again with bare hands? Use em and toss em. Not that costly compared to some of the other junk advocated. Talk about a waste of money, blue water filters. Filter your water to the extent that you trust the quality. If it’s a blue tube fine. If it’s a higher quality system, good on ya. Agree on memberships. Just the basics in the kitchen. Not a lot of trash and trinkets. Paper or plastic, whatever you want. Poisonous plastic? @MakingMyAbodeOTR TPMS is an early warning device. For example, you pull out of your spot on a 250-mile travel day. Right away you run over something and develop a leak. You dont plan to stop for at least 100 miles.Now you're going down the road, and the TPMS alerts you to low air pressure. Otherwise, you keep driving, as the pressure gets lower, the temperature gets higher, and the sidewall deteriorates. That's when blowouts happen. Your tire pressure gyluage in the glove box can't help you bin this situtation.

    • @JeffSchooley-b7l
      @JeffSchooley-b7l 2 месяца назад +2

      I thought she did a good job and sounded very educated. Proper pre trip will prevent way more blowouts than tpms sensors. Using a tire gauge forces you to physically get down there and look at your trailer and I would say most people with tpms sensors don't get down there and look they depend on there sensors to do the job there to lazy to do. I'm not saying that tpms sensors can't help they can but they are not necessary and should not take the place of a proper pre trip and keeping an eye on your trailer and tires driving down the road .
