    Dan congrats on the new unit! Hopefully being so close now will make for more regular content? Regardless, my Dad has a barn and it recently had the locks smashed and it was broken into. Pikeys took a bunch of tools and god knows what else. Thankfully his motorbikes weren't harmed or taken but pretty much everything else in there that they could move was gone. Make sure the new unit is safe, cctv might be a good idea too if you're that concerned.

    this might be worth a shot if all else has failed.try disconnecting the fuel return line from the fuel filter and sending compressed air down there .do this when you have low fuel and then .clean out the fuel sender unit with compressed air and brake fluid cleaner.
    we did this on a 1.9 pd engine with starting issues and it resolved the issue.
    change the fuel filter after this too

    B7 owner here - same chassis. All four discs should have M6 countersunk screws securing them to the hubs. I don't rely on them when undoing the outer driveshaft bolt with screwdriver in disc method though - I'd hate to shear one. It's easier to crack the outer bolts with the car still on the ground and the centre cap removed though.
    I notice you use Halfords axle stands on the gearbox cross brace/main subframe area (same as me). If they're the 2-ton stands, it's worth buying some axle stand pads from ebay (seller cav.mar1). They give you a slightly softer surface for that area and stop the upturns digging in. They're also good for the inside of the sill areas.
    Regarding the brake union connections - the union nut has a nasty habit of seizing onto the coating of the hard line. If you spanner it too much it'll start twisting the hard line along its length rather than spin the nut. Massively frustrating.

    i had a very very similar starting issue on my pd130 bora and it was my in tank lift pump dying, it would struggle to start every now and again till it completely died and wouldn’t start at all.
    bought a second hand pump for £40 swapped it over (takes about 30 mins) and it’s been spot on ever since.
    check to see if you can hear the lift pump prime when you turn the ignition on, you can’t hear it prime with over 3/4 tank of fuel

    My old vw Passat 1.9tdi started that bad for about the last 3 years i owned it. But i didnt care, as long as it started every day. I think it was the control unit for the glow plugs.

    • @dannyDC2
      @dannyDC2  6 лет назад

      +TraxX2k7² did you have an EML? I've been living with it for a while now, my only fear is it not starting one day. It's come close a few times where the battery has nearly died first. The constant cranking has finished off my engine mounts too.

  • @adamtaylor3201
    @adamtaylor3201 6 лет назад

    I would say that’s the secondary pump. My 330d wouldn’t start some mornings then I would try it again later and it would start straight away! It was under the passenger seat near the sill. Once I replaced it I never had the problem again and I could push the pump a little more when it was mapped again 👌🏻. Very different engines but I’m sure there the same sort of set up.

    • @dannyDC2
      @dannyDC2  6 лет назад

      Adam Taylor I was hoping it would be the lift pump but it seems to be doing its job. Apparently the bags on them can get dirty so I'm going to take it out later and see if it needs a clean.

  • @DannyBrown88
    @DannyBrown88 6 лет назад +1

    Don’t think there’s a problem with fuel getting into the cylinders Danny due to the smoke on start up. Smoke would suggest there is fuel. Although my Dad’s old Citroen Synergie used to have problems with cold starts and that was fuel related. Had an air leak on the fuel pump and would let air in overnight. There was some squishy thing along the fuel lines somewhere within the engine bay that he used to have to squeeze maybe 30 times to get the air out and then it would start. Don’t know if the VW engine has the same sort of thing?

  • @s19149
    @s19149 6 лет назад +4

    Its the injector seals danny. Common problem on pd tdi's mostly the early 115bhp ones but they're all susceptible to it. It starts no bother once warm I'm assuming? Park it facing down hill that normally helps.

    Tandem Pump or Tandem Pump Gasket classic when parked on a hill. Fuel drains back into tank.

    • @dannyDC2
      @dannyDC2  6 лет назад

      +fluke Nine I did do that previously but it's had a head on it since so might take a look and make sure it's not leaking. I did notice a bit of oil on the back of the engine the other day, kinda below that, could have been diesel!

    • @giraffeinabox
      @giraffeinabox 6 лет назад

      fluke Nine Yep, or even the rubber hoses from filter to tandem pump. Is the bellhousing covered in diesel? Does it leave rainbows when it rains?

    • @dannyDC2
      @dannyDC2  6 лет назад

      Nah I haven't noticed it leaving a mark on the road at all, it's parked on gravel overnight though so tricky to spot if it was leaking anything. I remember when I used to park it on the street and the tandem pump was leaking before it would leave diesel drops all over the street. Was quite bad so battled fixing it last year, think I even did a vlog haha. It never had any starting issues then though!

      in that case fuel sender unit under the rear seat, get a used one for £20 off ebay. All so you can use ROSS TECHS VDCS, laptop and cheap ebay obd cable. You can then see the fuel going to the injectors, you can see the starter crank etc. Also have you scanned it at all? Have you checked it isnt a wiring issue, if its same as other VAgs wire harness under the abs unit is a know bad point. also check you ecu connections, and check the known dodgy alternator wire near the gearbox.

    My PD150 has starting issues when it's cold, too, sometimes struggles to turn over so much the CD player loses memory, and it'll trigger the alarm (it actually does similar when it's warm sometimes, too, or if you stall it). It threw up a CEL the other day and VAGCOM said it was the glow control module. Bit of looking into it, and it seems they're quite common (they're just a relay, effectively), and the glow plug wiring harness is common to going too - on Leons, at least - so that's where i'd be looking. Surely it won't be fuel related if it's firing up fine when its warm, afterall?

    Spline bits are called XZN, also known as triple-square.

    • @dannyDC2
      @dannyDC2  6 лет назад

      +InitialDave everyday is a school day! Spline bits will do though until the next time I have to do the driveshsfts.

    • @InitialDave
      @InitialDave 6 лет назад

      VAG love the bloody things, so you'll probably find yourself cracking those bits out again before then. Still, they don't chew up like internal hexes, I'll give them that.

    • @timmccreery81
      @timmccreery81 6 лет назад

      And sometimes referred to as 12-point. VAG do indeed love them.
      My biggest frustration is PQ35 droplinks - triple square are used for counterholds for the nut but they're so small they round out almost instantly. I like triple-square for larger sizes but in small sizes each spline tip is so small they just corrode and turn to dust.

    • @InitialDave
      @InitialDave 6 лет назад

      timmccreery81 the issue is that a 12pt is usually taken to mean a bi - hexagonal form, rather than the triple square, so while they do have 12 points in the form, the profile is different, and they're not actually compatible.
      Luckily, it's rarely an issue, as a triple square is usually internally wrenching, while a bihexagonal is externally wrenching.

    • @timmccreery81
      @timmccreery81 6 лет назад

      Totally agree, I was referring to internal.
      Interestingly though the outer driveshaft bolts on my A3 are 12-point/bi-hexagonal and the sockets I use for them are referred to as 12-point, not bi-hexagonal.

      Yeah I have heard of that giving similar problems, but as you say they normally log codes/flash lights. I have no codes and no lights, so I don't think it's anything electrical. The car died on the way to the MOT station this morning. Not fun.

      i know for a fact you all have better fuel as compared to where i am from so it can't be a blocked cat converter/particle filter on your exhaust...Audi better get a solution to this problem cause there are a lot of there vehicles in my country giving that problem...if you get the solution to it can you let me know?

    When were the glow plugs last changed as I know those PD100, 130 and 150 are pigs to get going if the glow plugs are weak

    When you park it on a hill the diesel inside the engine goes back in to the fuel tank and tha happened with my Focus estate MK1 diesel

    Maybe just Glow Plugs? They don´t set a Fault usually on these older Audi´s

    Pump the rubber air bulge at the high pressure fuelpump, if it starts easier after you did that, its got air in the system. Lucky you its just an Audi, I had to do it on a Scania once after a new fuelpump was fitted, 20 minutes of squeezing that fucking thing

    Did you have to remove the driveshaft guards to? I found the 6mm hex on top a total pain.

    • @dannyDC2
      @dannyDC2  6 лет назад +1

      +CarAndMechanical nope! Managed to squeeze them out. I don't have any under trays though.

      Hah what's an undertray - I'm considering making a full car undertray on mine...but then I remember all the oil leaks/drips

      I know the exact bolts you're referring to. I had to remove the guard a few times while doing downpipe work and the top-most bolt is a git.

      Yea that downpipe/cat is a total pain I had to use 3 extensions one of which is my best purchase ever, a flexibit that's very taught.

    Good choice not doing the brake lines, they can be a pain!

      Nick JR Nearly every VAG I've worked on has the same issue - the union nut seizes onto the coating of the hard line. Spanner it too much and it literally twists the hard line along its length rather than just release and spin freely.

      BenXL I'm on ST springs on my B7 and I have a one finger arch gap so I'd say he's either on some seriously low springs or coilovers.
      Wheels are BBS CH, I'd guess at 18-inch based on the tyre sidewall looking similar to my 18s with 235/40 tyres.

    I know it sounds silly but have you tried another battery on it? I had the same problem with my Beemer on cold mornings. Wouldn't fire until it was warmer in the afternoon. Sounded similar to that
