Heard this for the millionth time on the radio the other day and said, 'Enough. I'm going to learn this bugger' Found this and I'm glad I did! Have my old synth out that I haven't played in years and following along with you! So much fun to play! Thanks!

I am pretty much a self-taught pianist. I used to olay this in a band in high school and another in college and have played it on many occasions since. I just sat down to "relearn it yesterday and figured I'd check out some RUclips talent. While you do play it a bit differently from me, you by far have it about as close to the original as I have heard. 99% of the "pro pianists" have it completely wrong, and it was wonderful to see somebody give this song some cred. Thanks Oliver. I recommend anybody wanting to learn to play this, to WATCH THIS VIDEO AS IT IS THE MOST REFLECTIVE OF THE ORIGINAL!
So happy to find this video on RUclips with the dearth of Supertramp tutorials. Fine... it's not a tutorial as some of you have said, but whatever... definitely easy enough to pause and rewind and pause and rewind. I've devoted my spare time to nailing it down this week for fear that it'll disappear any day now. Thank you Tidiouter!!!! Very well done indeed!!!
Hi T. Just got my 200A out of storage, fixed the problem why it went into storage, and wanted to learn this song. To date I’ve looked at many “tutorials” and although your post isn’t a tutorial per say, your camera was placed perfect. This song is all about right hand syncopation, and you’ve pretty much nailed it. The chorus is the icing on the cake. I gotta get one! Thanks so much for posting, you’re quite talented!
I lent my Juno 106 to my twin brother for his band to use and I haven't seen it since! He sold it for $100 to some guy back in 1998. You can't pick up one of these classic synthesized for less than $2,500 nowadays. The Wulitzer 200A is another perfect example of that. That was an incredible early synthesized piano sound that is almost impossible to replicate, even with a brand new $5,000 Korg or Yamaha. Me jelly of you too!
I'm first a drummer, then a guitarist and a piano/synth guy next. This guy plays it great, but while I can't read sheet music as I play, I can read sheet music to the point where I can understand the original composition. That said, learn to play it this way as it sounds just as good, but is less complicated between the two hands. Essentially the left and right hamd are playing a half step different from each other. Being a drummer, my brain is able to get different appendages to do different things simultaneously. Almost every other "lesson" on the internet has it way wrong. I think that's because they are just posting popular things that regular-Joe's want to hear and learn to play, yet they have never actually heard this awesome tune before! The way it's played here makes it so much easier on the left hand than the original composition and sounds pretty dang close.
for you all complaining about it not being a walkthrough... it is. just pause it, look at his damn fingers, learn the rhythm. you should all be grateful because it's rare to see piano videos with a good camera angle so you can really see everything they're doing and learn it. plus it's better for a lot because I know a lot of people hate when people pause like every 2 seconds and speak for 10 minutes. you can go with your own pace on this.
The internet is full of "classically trained pianists" that have never heard of the song they are attempting to provide lessons for. They may be talented, but without the passion of loving a great song such as this, most blow it. 1/2 of the guys have a drum click track playing behind it. Sure, that may make it easier to count, but it ruins the essence of this mostly electric jazz keyboard sound that makes this song a classic. Without ever hearing you play, just from your comment, I am quite sure you are a great musician!
It's a shame they blocked your Logical Song video. I'm sure it was awesome. : ( You really nail the playing & the sound. I would love to see you do a video for "Oh Darling" or "Casual Conversations." Cheers!!!
Badazz!! I'm just now starting to play again, I found a good keyboard. & now I can't quit playing. Last few years I felt like the piano was a blank paper, I thought I'd never get it back.. well, I'm not the greatest but I play, I've been playing since I was 3. I've always had a piano. Thank you for doing this, it looks a little challenging,, but I won't stop until I learn it. Don't ever stop playing. ✌🏾🙏🏽💜
I think you need to be over 50 years old to truly appreciate the greatness of this song. When it first came out, you couldn't go an hour without hearing it on any local radio stations!

It’s actually a great walkthrough. He plays all the parts, and you can see every note and every chord. If you need Supertramp spoon-fed to you, chances are you’re not ready to play it anyway.
The whole point of a "tutorial" is to show you how its played This is a play through While you CAN learn from it, and I have This is still not a tutorial
Living and dyin by the A flat nine.... I loved this song ever since I first heard it in 79 and it's all because of those A flat 9 chords repeated in the outro. Took me a long time to get back to playing music... this song was 35 years old when I bought a chart for it. I don't know if I could learn it or not on the keyboard. It also has a wicked bass line.
I got the chart out right after I wrote that and started hacking at it. Unbelievably it's got an abbreviated outro and doesn't even have the 9th (Bb) written. But the main verses and chorus seem right. What I *don't* have is a decent Wurli patch. My Roland does a nice Hammond, a nice pipe, and a nice Oberheim (Van Halen) but the EP sounds are weak, neither a decent Rhodes or Wurli. My Casio 88 - full piano with weighted keys - actually has an EP patch that is better. This almost makes me want to get another KB but I flat out don't have any more space available. If I could find a cheap one that had a decent Rhodes and Wurli I'd buy it just for that.
Props to you, either the wurlitzer has smaller than usual keys or you have big hands. I can't reach between G sharp and the next octave B flat at the same time. Maybe I have small hands
If you can spread just one octave per hand, you can easily nail this. You just need to olay it as Hodgeson originally composed it. Just rock back and forth on an A flat 5-6 with your left hand while playing the right hand only having to go about 3/4 of an octave. If you know how to play the piano basics it's easier to do it that way. But honestly, this is one of the best "lessons" you will find. The original is played with a standard 1-2-3-4 beat, but the right hand is 1/8th different (play on the "and" beats in-between the standard 4/4). You just need to be able to do two different things with each hand! It's much easier if you just learn each hand individually until muscle memory kicks in, then just play with both hands without even trying to think or count it out! I'm a drummer first, so that just comes naturally to me. Another great example of that is "Come Sail Away". Unless you are a piano savant, simple sounding songs like this can be tough to nail down. Pra tice, practice, practice.
I, too, would love to see this as an actual tutorial! Broken down a bit. It sounds awesome, but there are a couple parts I'm still having trouble with :) Nice job, though!
It's sad that people are saying this isn't a tutorial. It is, provided you can learn by watching other people play. Not that hard, if you actually try (which I'm sure half of you didn't)
Your video was a huge help in learning that song. The sheet music I purchased was written for solo piano rather than the piano accompaniment that was played with the band.
Great job man. Really helping me. I think you're making it hard on yourself though! Some of those R hand notes that you're stretching to reach are actually played by the L hand. The intro for example is (I'm pretty sure) Octaves in the L hand with the high note on 1 and 3 and the low note on 2 and 4. Great job though. Much thanks.
+Kal-El Johnson Indeed it is. I should have looked closer. I seen the two knobs and assumed it was a Rhodes, tweaked to sound a little like a Wurlitzer, since Wurlitzers are less common. Love that sound just the same! ;-)

Wow - I never get tired of listening to this. This song always makes me feel great. Thanks dude!
One of my favorite songs ... love the piano
BEAUTIFUL Wurlitzer! Perfect playing.
Wow nice walkthrough thanks for taking it real slow so I got every part
At least give a midi file, notation, SOMETHING! my solution is download it, loop it and slow it down using VLC media player.
@@extremeultralightaviation you know you can just slow it down right from youtube actually. helped me a lot
@@nicholasmarch3286 but you can't loop sections. That's where vlc comes in
William Brock you can change the playback screen RT on RUclips

my god, that is impressive, it sounds amazing, well done
Remind me nice memories.
You play this exceptionally well and the keyboard sound is beautiful. Truly fantastic music! I'm so happy you were able to repost the video.
This is the best cover of it the other synth pianos sound off on the other RUclips videos
Thank you for playing that song I love and enjoy..,❤️

Me encanta como suena esta canción, que ganas de aprenderla. Greetings from Chile, Southamerica
I got chills on the middle part!
I love this song it remind me when I was young 😂
That is a wonderful melody. Greetings from Ireland

where candidature I get the score of "goodbye stranger"? It is really hard to find it.
Where did you learn to play this song?
this is not a tutorial! You don't say a word! How about talking about what cords they are! This is barely a help but thanks.
Ain't nothing like the deep, raspy bass of the wurlie.

It was an early morning yesterday
I was up before the dawn
And I really have enjoyed my stay
But I must be moving on
Like a king without a castle
Like a queen without a throne
I'm an early morning lover
And I must be moving on
Now I believe in what you say
Is the undisputed truth
But I have to have things my own way
To keep me in my youth
Like a ship without an anchor
Like a slave without a chain
Just the thought of those sweet ladies
Sends a shiver through my veins
And I will go on shining
Shining like brand new
I'll never look behind me
My troubles will be few
Goodbye stranger it's been nice
Hope you find your paradise
Tried to see your point of view
Hope your dreams will all come true
Goodbye Mary, goodbye Jane
Will we ever meet again
Feel no sorrow, feel no shame
Come tomorrow, feel no pain
Sweet devotion (Goodby Mary)
It's not for me (Goodbye Jane)
Just give me motion (Will we ever)
To set me free (Meet again)
In the land and the ocean (Feel no sorrow)
Far away (Feel no shame)
It's the life I've chosen (Come tomorrow)
Every day (Feel no pain)
So goodbye Mary (Goodbye, Mary)
So goodbye Jane (Goodbye, Jane)
Will we ever (Will we ever)
Meet again (Meet again)
Now some they do and some they don't
And some you just can't tell
And some they will and some they won't
With some it's just as well
You can laugh at my behaviour
And that'll never bother me
Say the devil is my saviour
But I don't pay no heed
And I will go on shining
Shining like brand new
I'll never look behind me
My troubles will be few
Goodbye, stranger, it's been nice
Hope you find your paradise
Tried to see your point of view
Hope your dreams will all come true
Goodbye Mary, goodbye Jane
Will we ever meet again
Feel no sorrow, feel no shame
Come tomorrow, feel no pain
Sweet devotion (Goodbye, Mary)
It's not for me (Goodbye, Jane)
Just give me motion (Will we ever)
To set me free (Meet again)
In the land and the ocean (Feel no sorrow)
Far away (Feel no shame)
It's the life I've chosen (Come tomorrow)
Every day (Feel no pain)
So now I'm leaving (Goodbye, Mary)
Got to go (Goodbye, Jane)
Hit the road (Will we ever)
I'll say it once again (Meet again)
Oh, yes, I'm leaving (Feel so sorrow)
Got to go (Feel no shame)
Got to go (Come tomorrow)
I'm sorry, I must dash (Feel no pain)
So goodbye Mary (Goodbye, Mary)
So goodbye Jane (Goodbye, Jane)
Will we ever (Will we ever)
Meet again? (Meet again)
Go and believe it
I've got to go
