An animal showing its belly is a very vulnerable position, them letting you do it means they have a deep trust in you. They definitely won't lie on their back for everyone. Some dogs will let you trim their nails with them standing up or sitting down, but not with them on their back. The ones who won't let you do anything are the ones that need sedation. Location is also important, if the animal is in a place they feel is safe, they're more likely to be easier to work with. If they're in an unfamiliar place, they're much less likely to be easy to work with. I've had plenty of abused rescues that will let me groom them at home on their back, or in any position I need them to be in to brush hair/clip nails; But under no circumstance will they cooperate at the vet, and usually have to be muzzled because they fear and hate strangers. I don't blame them, some of my rescues came from horrible situations of abuse and neglect.

I had a Shiba for 10 years and he was the most high maintenance, difficult animal that I’ve ever dealt with. I loved him more than anything but uhhhh, just as an example, in order to even simply trim his nails, we literally had to bring him to the vet and have him sedated. Every single time. If you tried to even trim ONE nail, he would freak the f**k out, start “Shiba Screaming” and do acrobatics to try to get out of my grip. I can’t even count how many times we tried various types of training, including several professional dog trainers, but nothing would ever change - he remained the same stubborn, melodramatic and difficult animal that he always was. SO, with that said… looking at the insanely calm, serene, relaxed and well-behaved Shiba in this video just does not compute in my brain 😅
