    On the medieval ages, i think it is important to note that it wasn't just death, destruction, plague and obscurantism for all (it was in Europe indeed); one could not just skip a period as brilliant and important as the Muslim civilisation, and its contribution to human history. Otherwise, this was a really interesting topic.

    I never was really into history. I always loved global history. When I went to college I took a history class and it didn't focus on wars or anything like that. It mostly focused on ancient civilizations, tribes and African American slavery. My professor had printed articles about how enslaved people lived and she showed the class how money looked back in the day . From that day forward I was hooked on finding out more about what the enslaved people endured, what they ate , how many were murdered. I feel like an investigator trying to put the pieces together. I do think about majoring in history but I am uncertain of what jobs I would be able to get. If I was to get a degree in history I would want to travel the world and find real documentation, artifacts, clothing, bones, mummies etc.

    Ophelia,
    As of right now, I'm 2 years into getting my degree. As my brain has turned to mush in an increasingly concerning fashion since the beginning of the pandemic, I have really lost a lot of focus as to what I want to do with my degree. I'm going to overshare for a moment, so I hope you don't mind: I think I'm going through a bit of a crisis. History as a whole has been my passion since I was in the 8th grade. I'm now a sophomore in college (as previously stated), and for the life of me, I could not tell you what I am learning right now. I had so many dreams, so many ambitions ahead of me that I was working towards that, at least as of right now, have become unobtainable for some reason or another. Whether it's my own reluctance, a lack of funding, or the paths to achieve said goals being unclear, I have *seriously* been thinking about my future in this career path and whether or not it is worth it.
    From the tone of this message, I'm sure you can tell which side I'm leaning towards.
    I really appreciate your video. It has opened my eyes and cleared up those paths a little bit, but at the same time made me realize certain things that I want are just realistically unobtainable at my level of skill (even if I did end up getting a masters or phd). You seem like a very intelligent young woman, and I really hope you go far in this field. You sound like you're doing great! I just... I look and listen at the way you act and the way you speak about these historians and these time periods that I, a person in the same field, should *know* about, yet I am completely lost.
    Thank you for helping me realize just a bit of what I need to do with my life. Hopefully I can get it straightened out before it's too late.
    KP

    Anyone on here thinking of going to graduate school for history must understand that the job market for history PhDs is incredibly tight, and has been so since the 1970's. It is a long and difficult road to take. And a master's degree in history is neither here nor there, IMHO. A master's degree in history used to be a good credential for a job at a community college or other two year college, but increasingly PhDs have been taking those jobs because there is such a glut of them.
    I love history. My undergraduate degree is in history. But I didn't see much a career in the field for myself.

    I can’t speak for other countries, but I think many videos may have other career options because actual jobs as a historian are scarce. I also ended up getting a masters in Defense and Strategic Studies and a grad certificate in Nuclear Weapons Effects, Policy, and Proliferation. It made me a better scholar, but also made me more marketable. I think this is actually where most U.S. history programs are lacking. They don’t really talk about historical skills outside of academia even though the jobs aren’t there. More emphasis could be placed on public history education, archivist positions, and other historical type jobs.

    Since you are asking for video requests: I vaguely remember you speaking a bit about Old French in one of your recent videos. I am not sure if you formally learnt it or just read some medieval French texts... in any case, I would be interested in anything you could add to this topic, in whatever shape or form it might be.
    I am studying Japanese and French and although I am interested in the older Sprachzustände (is there an English word for it? I can only think of something like "older forms" but it doesn't sound as good as the German word... sorry native English speakers :p) of both of these, my university does not really offer a proper Old French course. Therefore I will be trying to study it a bit on my own after the semester. I would enjoy anyone who has experience learning "old" languages to tell me about the process (and what texts you read etc.)

    Im just about to go into college and i wont lie this has been on my mind a lot recently. Originally i wanted to become a history teacher so, i don’t know secondary school/college that sorta thing however you are supposed to know and teach a broader area of history some areas of which i am not particularly interested in. This is when i started to look into being an actual historian, i think my “area” of expertise is Anglo-Saxons/Norman England and the Middle Ages. Not only would this be better for me since i would want to put more effort into researching what i enjoy but also it means i don’t have to teach kids a subject i hardly know. Anyways you really have peaked my interest at least i have a few more years to ponder on it.

    Wait, wait, wait. Do people not consider archeologists historians!? I'm not really in history, as I think you know, I'm just casually interested. But like... WHY!? Is there something I don't understand about what archeologists do? I'm so confused.

    • @OpheliaVert
      @OpheliaVert  3 года назад +3

      Dakota Abroad - Language, Culture, Veganism, Games well I meant it a bit lightheartedly but there’s a different way of approaching analysis and evidence in archaeology and I think that’s the thing. The archaeologist I’ve been working with said that he thinks sometimes archaeologists work too broadly and historians work too narrowly (regarding ancient/medieval study)

    This might not be so relevant for Ophelia's audience, but I'll throw it out there anyhow. Having spent way too much of my youth at a university, I have found that far too many students (in my experience, at least) were not only woefully unprepared but were also woefully uninformed as to what an academic career would entail. For that matter, most of them had no idea what education really is. (And I include myself in everything I've said so far.) To exacerbate the problem, the undergraduate course work did nothing to remedy this situation. Then people get into grad school and find all kinds of things being thrown at them that they never suspected and that they can't handle.

    • @OpheliaVert
      @OpheliaVert  3 года назад

      Big Scary Steve I agree, this is definitely a problem. This is partly why it took me a long time before saying I wanted to go into academia, because I felt so aware that my undergrad degree didn’t prepare me for what that entailed. I chose my Master’s degree based on one that was focused on getting you a career in history, with a big emphasis on internships and jobs within the course requirements so I could actually get a feel for what it meant. So yes! I absolutely agree. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

    @Ophelia Vert Great video! You know in our heavily commercialized and modern world we have forgotten that while you can make money off of virtually everything:
    *Only commerce has money and profit as the end goal.*
    *Non commercial activities such as history does not have money as its end goal.*
    The end goal of history is to learn. And the end goal of learning is to acquire wisdom.
    What then does Wisdom teach us with Her doctrines? That we should hold to the good and abstain from evil. And what is the fruit of Wisdom? That we possess a clear conscience that we have not dealt evil and unjustly with others, having walked the Way of Truth.

    As for being a historian, I don't think one gets a very good idea of what that is from being a student in a history class. In a history class, one simply memorizes one damned thing after another. Being a researcher and scholar is quite different, and I for one certainly didn't apprehend that even when I was required to write research papers in history classes. I''m still not terribly clear on how a historian goes about finding out about history. All I can imagine is reading a lot and then trying to come to conclusions by balancing the differences between the sources one has read. Of course, there is also the interpretation of what one has read, but that seems a bit more akin to philosophy to me rather than simply trying to establish the facts of what happened.

      When I behold archaeological sites or read ancient inscriptions, I _thirst_ for the chance to spectate and live it firsthand as a nonintervening ghost. To see it from different perspectives and feelings.
      The moment you uploaded this very video, you were partaking of history in the making. This video could be randomly found a millennium from now and noone would fathom (or even speak the same dialect of English possibly!) what you felt when you were making it, editing it, uploading it - not even future you might remember it so vividly (just like past you who planned it from past going forward didn't have the project completely worked out - it was a vague plan or intention waiting to gestate).
      No one else could have done that but Ophelia Vert.
      This very comment thread is History in the making.
      If it holds true for us at Present, surely we can justly extend the reasoning to the indefinite Past and Future, no?
