My old video for this war from 10 years ago was inaccurate so I’m glad I got around to making an infinitely better version. Enjoy! Also: so many peace treaties…
Very nice job with this remake, man. I never would've thought they went through this much just to finalize the peace. It's wild. One minor inaccuracy I noticed though: The Free City of Frankfurt is portrayed as being allied to Austria, when they were actually neutral in the war (but still got annexed anyway). Other than that, great job. I hope you have a great day.
That's because at that time, the Austrian empire didn't recognize italian indipendence or an Italian unify state. So, for Austria, at that time, there were only Kingdom of Sardinia and occupy territory
And also because, in that war, Austria was defeated mostly by Prussian troops. The 3 main battles fighted against Italy were win by Austria. So Italy won only because was allied with Prussia
@@KlausVonKuste The Italians got both crushed on land (Custoza) and in sea (Lissa). So Austria thought a weak opponent didn't deserve any reward, since Prussia was the one who actually crushed Austria. The funny part is that Italian admiral Persano even celebrated "victory" after the battle of Lissa with the Italian population until the real outcome was published.
Potential changes in the timeline Italy doesn't join the Entente as they have literally nothing to gain and so join the Central Powers. The alpine front would be a stalemate, so not much happens. When the Soviets leave the war Austria-Hungary can send all of its forces to the Balkans and Western Front It is possible, that the Central Powers win and if they lose Italy would probably have to give the Papal States and Naples independence with the UK taking Sicilly and France taking Sardinia. UK also takes Somalia, Eritrea and Cyrenaica while France takes Tripolitania. Mussolini still rises to power
That sounds pretty untenable, because of the whole Italy in the way. France had no troops in Venice, so either Italy would have had to basically give it up, or France would have to go to war. Both are possible (but extremely unlikely, though I guess I could see something like that happen in an absolute monarchy), but either way Italy would have just taken it back during the Franco-Prussian war, like they took Rome.
I don't know if this is correct but I remember reading this somewhere : Bismarck had a chance to enter to Vienna and devastate the enemy but he predicted that Austria would be a needed ally in the future for Prussia/Germany.
@@hansspiegl8684 It's administration and ruling family and class were austrian or otherwise teutonophone though, still, even if only as a second language.

Yep, Bismarck had the chance to continue the war and march to Vienna, but his instructions were that the war needed to be short in order not to make Austria a bittered and resentful enemy. He pressed for a quick peace that was easy on Austria.
interesting to see a conflict where the resolution took longer than the actual fighting, it isn't nearly as flashy and attention-grabbing but i love getting into the details of treaties and the handover of territories
I can't remember anything like that...something kinda happen during Napoleon time, treaties of Congress of Vienna were not finished, until Napoleon came second time and was defeated after 100 days. Also there was Fiume question between Italy and Yugoslavia.
I like how Schleschwig-Holstein was the region they started the war yet it was the last to get incorporated (right before the North Germany Confederation). It looked like they forgot what the first objective was.
Actually Germany was on the defensive Plus, Germany didn’t even care about Alsace. Actually many believe they intentionally tricked Austria into declaring war so they wouldn’t be the aggressor but could still smash them
The double defeat to Prussia and Italy would lead to a major internal crisis in Austria leading to the creation of Austria-Hungary. The final form of the Habsburg Empire.
Fun fact: The reason why Austria wanted to give Veneto to France instead of Italy was because of the Italian defeats on both land (Custoza) and in sea (Lissa). Austria felt like it was just Prussia who really beat them. Especially in the latter battle, when the inferior Austrian navy crushed a bigger, more modern and superior in firepower, and faster Italian fleet. The funny part is that Italian admiral Persano even celebrated "victory" with the Italian population until the real outcome was published. Persano was then judged by the Italian Senate. And about Veneto, everyone here was Italian, so they voted to join Italy.
Austria also wanted the support of France against Prussia. And with the victories in Italy, the prussian victory at Königgrätz was equalized and the situation for the prussian army grew even worse with a cholera outbreak. Only Bismark recognized this and proposed a quick peace without territorial changes against the order of his king and government.
I really liked this video, specially the part where the N.G.C fully transformed into a nation-state just like being a type of a sneek peek of what germany was about to become in the 20st century.
Because Italy did not capture Venice and the Austrians knew they could beat the Italians they felt that giving it to Italy would be humiliating. But pressure from both Prussia and France made the Austrians still give the territory but as a final insult to Italy they gave it to France out of pure spite.
I had two commercials, first one was 3 minutes and I could skip. Second one was 2:30 and it wouldn't let me skip. This video is less than three minutes. What is youtube doing right now?

It wouldn't surprise me at all if he and his wife did indeed do it to avoid conscription, the war was unpopular with many folks and even Crown Prince Frederick of Prussia felt it was absolutely immoral (Bismarck ignored his protests though).
Great video! I just wrote a 3000 word essay on the second schleswig war, and noticed there has been very little coverage on the war. Can you please make a mapping video of the second schleswig war?
1: they didn't perform good enough to demand that much. 2: they joined the war because prussia promised to give Veneto to them, but nothing more. 3: Austria only ceded Veneto because they lost to the Prussians, not the Italians. They thought they could beat Italy alone, so it would be too humiliating for them to cede it directly to Italy, that's why they gave the territory to France instead (which then gave to Italy).
It wasn't part of the agreement made with the Prussians before the war. Garibaldi's troops actually almost reached Trento after winning the battle of Bezzecca, but he was ordered to turn back as an armistice had been declared.
@alexzero3736 monetary is an adjective, money is a noun. in that sentence, you would use "monetary" to describe the type of compensation, making it an adjective
For a short time prussian territory was occupied: The prussian province Hohenzollern in Southern Germany ( where Hohenzollern castle really is) by Württembergian troops. And a single castle at württembergian/ bavarian border by Bavarian troops.
No, the plebiscite was made after the Second War of Italian independence, so in 1859, the territory was ceded to France. Even before the Kingdom of Italy was officially proclaimed. Upd.: Looks like it was 1860, after all
Because they were sore losers and were too prideful to secede land to Italy, a new born state. They also knew that they could have beaten Italy if it wasnt for France and Prussia forcing them to give it up.
Looking at history, Prussia already attacked Saxony during the Austrian War odf Succession and even tried to annex them twice, the first time in the Seven Years' War and the second time in the Congress of Vienna.
Lol, sounds like you graduated from a biased French history school… smh. France dug it’s own ´grave‘ when they arrogantly decided to invade Germany in 1870 for the millionth time in their history.
The Voivodeship of Serbia and Banat of Temeschwar was already dissolved in 1860, so it shouldn't be shown on the map. Furthermore, one could argue that Hungary's statehood was also already de facto restored with the reconstitution of the separate, non-Imperial Chancellery and Governorate of Hungary in 1860, and with the legislative elections and the resumption of the Hungarian parliament in 1861. In that sense, illustrating Hungary as part of the Austrian Empire is not accurate.
