"When Unknown Mortal Orchestra appeared in 2010, the band - essentially a vehicle for 35-year-old Portland-by-way-of-New Zealand singer, songwriter and guitarist Ruban Nielson - truly lived up to the first word of its moniker. Nielson posted his first few tunes anonymously to Bandcamp; after one song, "Ffunny Ffrends," a loopy, lo-fi indie-pop nugget that floats along on boxy hip-hop beats, a strangled fuzz-guitar melody and Nielson's own child-like vocals, gained traction, he signed a deal with Fat Possum. The label released UMO's 2011 self-titled debut, and the group hit the road with acts like Liars and Grizzly Bear. A second album, the more introspective II, came in 2013 on Jagjaguwar, which also issued Multi-Love this past May.” - Rolling Stone

OMG. Watching him play live will ruin your life. You will question the nature of reality. He somehow plays soft and hard, up and down, good and bad all at the sametime. One of the best above the dirt.

wseliasx yo so many of them all over Sex and Food, they're hypnotic and full of tranquility, he makes some amazing songs
I learn't a couple songs last night (Necessary Evil, Multi Love) and its the first time in a while I've had to actually "learn" a song, usually i sight read the tabs. I was fully blown away by the complexity of the progressions and harmonies. So much modal interchange going on, he weaves through keys so seamlessly you almost don't notice it. Its incredible, i agree pretty much best chord prog's ever.
It’s earth shattering what he does with his knowledge of chords and the pedals he uses. His guitar of choice also says a lot about him as an artist

I think it's probably because Alain actually knows what he is doing. Alain can conduct and interview well, where it's more about the person being interviewed and less about Alain. You've probably seen interviews done with actors after a blockbuster has come out. The actors looks bored like "oh fuck me, another one?" or the actor is trying their best to make it interesting. The interviewer sucks as always, asking dumb questions like "Uhhhh, so whats your favorite piZzA tOppiNg?" Great example, there is a great compilation of Cillian Murphy in interviews.

So true. The host is fucking killing it in the jam. It's not easy to accompany Ruban's style of playing and this guy did it so well it almost sounded rehearsed.

That description of Sam Cooke and Frank Zappa music he made is so brilliant, I know exactly what he means. It’s also an artist describing the sound he is going for and then you listen to his music and you go, well, he nailed it.
I dream to be as experienced with guitar one day that I can understand everything Ruban is saying
You could learn the music theory stuff he's talking about in a pretty short period of time, within a few months tops
Keep at brother. You will get there! Watching some videos about theory and learning songs from teachers on RUclips can really speed up the process. It's a beautiful feeling when it all starts to make since. You essentially have a coherent map of the guitar instead of flying blind. Enjoy the journey 🤘

Nielson: "me and my brother started a punk band" - yeah no shit!! The MINT CHICKS were huge in (their home of) New Zealand and worth checking out if you haven't already and are so inclined to that kinda music.
These are two great players. Alain has been apart of a few of the best albums of the last 15 years as a songwriter and Ruban fronting UMO who have more recently caught my attention. This interview seems to play out as if neither of the two really know much about each other's work. I'd have imagined you would see at least a little of Ruban fanning on Alain about touring with John Paul Jones in Them Crooked Vultures, but he seems to have no idea who he is. And Alain seems like they just asked him to be there. He has no real questions about any UMO albums or songs. It's a little like he keeps it really surface level with the interview like he just doesn't know Ruban either or what he's worked on.

+Armando Peredia You know, I completely agreed with you the first time I saw this, but now that I've watched it again I can say I think Alain got some good stuff out of Ruban in this. Ruban doesn't really go too deep into details but if you complete his thoughts he tells a lot. The sam cooke chord progression, the Hendrix soloing over Zappa harmony, and just watching his right hand in general tells so much about his playing
It's kinda fun having them both not know each other, they let their interest and skill speak for them

Anyone know what he's playing around 2:15? Is an A minor pentatonic shape over an Am7 but with a different root note? It's like instant Zappa. I love it.
I've since made sense of what it is. It's an A minor pentatonic but with Bb in the bass. You can do the same kinda thing in any key.
