OMG. Watching him play live will ruin your life. You will question the nature of reality. He somehow plays soft and hard, up and down, good and bad all at the sametime. One of the best above the dirt.
I learn't a couple songs last night (Necessary Evil, Multi Love) and its the first time in a while I've had to actually "learn" a song, usually i sight read the tabs. I was fully blown away by the complexity of the progressions and harmonies. So much modal interchange going on, he weaves through keys so seamlessly you almost don't notice it. Its incredible, i agree pretty much best chord prog's ever.
Nah. Fender is redundant in releasing new models. Why? Because they've been putting out so many stupid offset models that look exactly like the Jagstang.
So true. The host is fucking killing it in the jam. It's not easy to accompany Ruban's style of playing and this guy did it so well it almost sounded rehearsed.
I think it's probably because Alain actually knows what he is doing. Alain can conduct and interview well, where it's more about the person being interviewed and less about Alain. You've probably seen interviews done with actors after a blockbuster has come out. The actors looks bored like "oh fuck me, another one?" or the actor is trying their best to make it interesting. The interviewer sucks as always, asking dumb questions like "Uhhhh, so whats your favorite piZzA tOppiNg?" Great example, there is a great compilation of Cillian Murphy in interviews.
i feel you man... same here. god i would kill for this... wish there would be more "ruban playing/discussiong type videos" but i just guess, everyone acts crazy nowadays...
they're talking and its going great, and then they drop in with a super nuts ambient guitar jam the likes of which i havent seen in such a long time wow
Keep at brother. You will get there! Watching some videos about theory and learning songs from teachers on RUclips can really speed up the process. It's a beautiful feeling when it all starts to make since. You essentially have a coherent map of the guitar instead of flying blind. Enjoy the journey 🤘
These are two great players. Alain has been apart of a few of the best albums of the last 15 years as a songwriter and Ruban fronting UMO who have more recently caught my attention. This interview seems to play out as if neither of the two really know much about each other's work. I'd have imagined you would see at least a little of Ruban fanning on Alain about touring with John Paul Jones in Them Crooked Vultures, but he seems to have no idea who he is. And Alain seems like they just asked him to be there. He has no real questions about any UMO albums or songs. It's a little like he keeps it really surface level with the interview like he just doesn't know Ruban either or what he's worked on.
+Armando Peredia You know, I completely agreed with you the first time I saw this, but now that I've watched it again I can say I think Alain got some good stuff out of Ruban in this. Ruban doesn't really go too deep into details but if you complete his thoughts he tells a lot. The sam cooke chord progression, the Hendrix soloing over Zappa harmony, and just watching his right hand in general tells so much about his playing
That description of Sam Cooke and Frank Zappa music he made is so brilliant, I know exactly what he means. It’s also an artist describing the sound he is going for and then you listen to his music and you go, well, he nailed it.
Fell in love with this dude when I saw them in concert and he just shredded that guitar with so much passion yet ease. These videos are just worsening my problem haha
Nielson: "me and my brother started a punk band" - yeah no shit!! The MINT CHICKS were huge in (their home of) New Zealand and worth checking out if you haven't already and are so inclined to that kinda music.
I’ve only heard one UMO song (ffunny ffrends) (I love it) but I am hooked so far! whether it’s the heavily modded offset Fenders, cool jazz punk riffs, brilliant overdrive tones, or just the pure thrill of making tunes in this video, I want more of it!
Mac is a fuckin ripper! I know it’s his choice, but I wish he played with overdrive sometimes. he can solo really well, and not always in the traditional blues/pentatonic scales!
Anyone know what he's playing around 2:15? Is an A minor pentatonic shape over an Am7 but with a different root note? It's like instant Zappa. I love it.
11:18 "Oh, I thought I put the emotional crescendo right there but, uh, there you go... doing that strum pattern so many people have tried to impress others with before but, then you do it that way, so 90s relief, and it's so ... I just love it and, well, shit, guess I'm just 'Murican Cheese product and you're making cheddah over there." It's not "wow this guys better than me", it's "I've basically been considered genius and I I decided to rut in this groove I think is brilliant and this dudes like 'oh yah, I feel you, already there; don't worry baby bird, I'm gonna feed you. I gotchu fam.'". That's not humbling... that's EXHILARATING. Like finding you're not alone in the universe. That's why he smiles. Same as 9:31. Isn't not ego; it's "I thought I was just here to go through the motions but what this guy over there just did was beautiful and I love it." This is why I love music.
Listening to Euphoria Morning at release: "HOW THE FUCK is anyone supposed to play this?!" Multiple decades later: "Y'all bitches don't know about Alain? *disdain*"
OMG. Watching him play live will ruin your life. You will question the nature of reality. He somehow plays soft and hard, up and down, good and bad all at the sametime. One of the best above the dirt.
Cameron Christian I saw them live and it was amazing
Just saw him live a couple weeks ago. Now I can't put music on without hearing UMO
Ruban´s chord progressions is probably the most innovative thing in forever
wseliasx yo so many of them all over Sex and Food, they're hypnotic and full of tranquility, he makes some amazing songs
It’s earth shattering what he does with his knowledge of chords and the pedals he uses. His guitar of choice also says a lot about him as an artist
I hope one day fender gives him a signature model.
Nah. Fender is redundant in releasing new models. Why? Because they've been putting out so many stupid offset models that look exactly like the Jagstang.
He's possibly moving on he's been playing Built guitar Co
Sundown Syndrome as the profile pick I see you are a cultured gentleman
@@TheWhollySmoked signature ruban nielson signature kurt cobain jagstang
9:16 The look of "Okay, I guess I gotta do this..."
9:31 The look of "Oh wait this guy gets me"
So true. The host is fucking killing it in the jam. It's not easy to accompany Ruban's style of playing and this guy did it so well it almost sounded rehearsed.
Do you know Alain Johannes?
Ruben: "I sometimes play like Zappa."
Alain: *doesn't even mention that he knew Zappa personally*
I knew it then he is really proficient
I think it's probably because Alain actually knows what he is doing. Alain can conduct and interview well, where it's more about the person being interviewed and less about Alain. You've probably seen interviews done with actors after a blockbuster has come out. The actors looks bored like "oh fuck me, another one?" or the actor is trying their best to make it interesting. the final jam is amazing
truly! goosebumps
"Wanna do a little jammin'?"
Cue epicness.
Alain Johannes is a terrific listener.
I watch this like 3 times a month
Was going to thumbs that up but I must've done that the last 3 times!
i feel you man... same here. god i would kill for this... wish there would be more "ruban playing/discussiong type videos" but i just guess, everyone acts crazy nowadays...
Lol so true
same
That jam was cool af
Two guitars speaking to each other, perfectly in sync
they're talking and its going great, and then they drop in with a super nuts ambient guitar jam the likes of which i havent seen in such a long time wow
I’m self taught and every time I come back to this video I understand what he’s saying a little bit more. Love him so much, such a fucking genius
HIS GUITAR PLAYING IS MAGICAL!!!!! 😳🌟⭐
Their jam at the end is AMAZING...Didn't want it to end...
That jam session at the end blew my mind!!What an amazing sound for just coming up with on the spot. Mind melting.
one of these shows needs to do Kevin Parker for sure
+Luen Harris that's just gem man
Tame impala fucking sucks
+shitstain001 Im all for having your own opinions but, man I couldn't disagree more, especially with that insult
+Luen Harris he'd show up with a synth....
+Luen Harris yeah, the Antares and Innerspeaker material is for sure good for this
Do Jon Dwyer!
Do JON DWYER!
DO JON DWYER!

John*
Needs to happen still..
If this doesn't happen I'll shoot myself
this must also happen
Man, he’s a good player.
Alain Johannes is the man.
i love UMO so much. I could never pinpoint why until he said that thing about Zappa, but make it romantic.
Wow never knew about this series hosted by the great Alain Johannes. Great interview for two crazy good guitarists
I'd love to see the uncut version of this. It looks like Ruban had a lot more to say.
I dream to be as experienced with guitar one day that I can understand everything Ruban is saying
You could learn the music theory stuff he's talking about in a pretty short period of time, within a few months tops
Keep at brother. You will get there! Watching some videos about theory and learning songs from teachers on RUclips can really speed up the process. It's a beautiful feeling when it all starts to make since. You essentially have a coherent map of the guitar instead of flying blind. Enjoy the journey 🤘
when are you guys gonna get lil wayne on here? I've been dying to learn his one string technique
He ripped that off of Brushy One-String
2 note one string technique
stevie t can show you how to play guitar like him
This dude is so humble and cool!!!!!
Easily my favorite modern guitarist, deserves WAY more credit!
This guy is a muthafukin genius
I like that they've added jams to the episodes

+Armando Peredia that's why it's called guitar power- Otherwise the title would be Ruban Nielson interview
It's kinda fun having them both not know each other, they let their interest and skill speak for them
i like how put-together their outfits are/ all around role models almost.
Two absolute legends
That description of Sam Cooke and Frank Zappa music he made is so brilliant, I know exactly what he means. It’s also an artist describing the sound he is going for and then you listen to his music and you go, well, he nailed it.
So much wisdom
that was a freakishly good jam on the end, omg
Speechless.
I'm digging those pants, man.
Both These Dudes are Awesome!!!! Jam at the end was delicius
The jam at the end was amazing.
Ruben is incredibly talented and creative. I love UMO! Great stuff man!
Fell in love with this dude when I saw them in concert and he just shredded that guitar with so much passion yet ease. These videos are just worsening my problem haha
That jam session is exactly the emotion I cant describe
that jam was amazing
That jam toward the end was sexy!
That ending was magnificent. If they ever do make the Blood Meridian movie, you two should do the soundtrack.
Nielson: "me and my brother started a punk band" - yeah no shit!! The MINT CHICKS were huge in (their home of) New Zealand and worth checking out if you haven't already and are so inclined to that kinda music.
Wow, what a pleasant surprise. It's Alain Johannes!
what a weird and wonderful jam! Surely made my morning today
The Jam at the end is AWESOME

These guitars is getting rare these days...
Funny how no one ever makes that comment when it's just another strat, les paul, sg, tele, hollow body etc etc
My god, that jam
For Guitar Power 2017: Alain Johannes talking about your amazing playing and style. He is the best!
I FCKIN LOVE RUBAN
That was super cool!!!
Wish that video hadn't stopped
What's with his strap?! I've tried it and it's fucking impossible to do standing up. He plays live, like that. What a boss.
Awesome stuff
He’s such an inspiration
If I could choose a life for myself at birth, it would be to become a master guitarist. I could learn now, but oh the frustration lol
Do Kevin Parker!!!!!
Tame Impala is cool, but he's not that cool of a guitarist.
damn. the host is fucking epic
Great pairing of awesome musicians!
Awesome interview
i like his style.
Love him 💖
that jam is freaking wicked
Nice to hear he likes Buzzcocks! Good job he played "What Do I Get?" too.
Fuck yeah! My favorite episode yet.
Alain did flamenco on electric guitar :O
that jag stang is fucking awesome
I'm late but i really love this
Dude, really, you can't just not have Matt Sweeney on Guitar Power, he is Guitar Power
Ruban is the dude 😎
04:52 there goes "hunnybee"
I also think the first chord he played is the first chord of “Ffunny Ffriends”
This guys is really good.
I don't know who this is, but he's really good. Both of them.
DO MAC DEMARCO
he actually can shred tbh
Of course he can, the guys incredible!
he is so underrated as a musician because he is so goofy lol
Mac is a fuckin ripper! I know it’s his choice, but I wish he played with overdrive sometimes. he can solo really well, and not always in the traditional blues/pentatonic scales!
that jam
Anyone know what he's playing around 2:15? Is an A minor pentatonic shape over an Am7 but with a different root note? It's like instant Zappa. I love it.
I've since made sense of what it is. It's an A minor pentatonic but with Bb in the bass. You can do the same kinda thing in any key.
Awesome.
Amazing
Wait, what the fuck ALAIN JOHANNES IS HOSTING IT
Kevin Parker please!
Parker needs a mini series for all his sounds and production. There's so much depth to his multifaceted multitude of musical attributes
just like like just like you know like just like like ehm like and like just like
so much "like",Ruben

His playing so melodically good I must know what pedals he's using
+jaakebraake Ruban is just going straight into the amp in this video
mind blastingg!
No disrespect to Sweeney, but Alain is a bad man…that end jam and the way Ruban laughed afterwards…simply gorgeous 🫀🌈👽
Yes!!!!
Listening to Euphoria Morning at release: "HOW THE FUCK is anyone supposed to play this?!" Multiple decades later: "Y'all bitches don't know about Alain? *disdain*"
The editing is so fucking funny
I would love this guy on a followup to 'It Might Get Loud'

I love that he plays through cheap Fender Amps.
