- Felling Pine Trees
We cut down some big pine trees on our homestead for firewood and to make benches and seating (in the future). This will make space for the small native trees already growing and let light reach some big olive trees.
Our friends Maggie and James have already been here for a week and we're joined by another friend, John (Dovey).
James has been watching @BuckinBillyRaySmith on RUclips for the last 3 months and is keen to put all that he's learned into practice.
He also shares a great tip to measure where your tree will land (work out the length using simple geometry) with an axe.
Planting Trees
We continue our farm tradition, where our visitors take part in planting trees.
Lemon tree, Pear tree, Peach tree, and hazelnut tree.

So glad to see you taking down those pines.
Still a couple more to go and we can let the other trees like olives oaks chestnut and medronho grow.
How wonderful to have great friends. It’s beautiful that each one planted their own tree, so special. Enjoying your journey.
We are truly grateful for our wonderful friendship and their enthusiasm. 👍😊
That was very satisfying to watch!
Thank you. It was satisfying to get this big task done. 👍
You have beautiful soil. 😍
It’s getting better all the time. 😊👍
Very beautiful land you have 😍
It really is! Thank you 😊
Nice to see the fun that comes from teamwork!
It’s a real joy when friends help out 🤩
I love your all videos ❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you 😊
I love your videos. You two are very inspiring, and the way the two of you work together is wonderful. Keep sharing your journey I’m loving it.
Thank you 😊
lovely video 🙂
Thank you 😊
Sitting here in my living room in Canada and watching your great adventures , it makes me feel like going to Portugal and buying a Quinta, you make it look so easy, but I know it is hard work . You are blessed to have such nice helping friends, God bless you all and keep up the great work.
We’re really grateful for all the help we receive from our friends, Mary. It’s wonderful. 😊
It doesn’t look easy to me. They do a lot of heavy, too heavy, lifting and carrying for middle-aged bodies. It will show up later, but they are living their dream. Hopefully, they will pass it on before they get too old to keep it going.
"I'm a lumberjack, and I'm OK
I sleep all night and I work all day..." Now everybody sings! 🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎶🎶 😃🤣🤣🤣
And now I’ll be singing until bedtime. 🤣

Anything involving a Swedish chain saw wins my heart... I can imagine the cracking sound and smell of the pine logs in the fireplace ... beautiful contrast between bringing down the old (pine) and planting the new (fruits).
A fire in the hearth is a cosy thing and that wood 🪵 will be ready next winter. Thank you for mentioning the contrast in the two parts of the video. It’s great that you noticed. 😊
So nice to have friends come and help! Makes the job fun too! If I lived in Portugal I would want to hang out with all of you! You all seem like a fun people! Thanks for sharing your life with us. See you next time.
It feels more like fun than hard work when you’re with good friends. 😊
Great video! Thank you!
Glad you liked it!
Harte
Ijle groet vanuit Nederland!
Hard work for sure, but extremely rewarding. 😊👍
Nothing better than planting trees especially fruit trees. Great work!
Absolutely. Always feels like we’re building for the future. 😊👍
Timber !!!!!!!! lots of firewood for the winter. The land is looking great , nice and clean, great job !!!!!!!!
Thank you. It’s certainly getting better with time. 😊👍
This is my best segment of Nearby Veggies so far... I'm a Ugandan but I love nature, and trees and starting all over... hahaha... Portugal is somewhat like Uganda, rainy and green!
Fabulous. We barely see a drop of rain in summer. It’s hot and dry here. A bit different to your tropical green Uganda. 😊
Ah that quaint Hampshire term of endearment, ‘the Dorises!’ What a fabulous film xx
I’d forgotten I was a Doris. 😂 Thank you for being a great cast and film crew. Xx 😘
Hahaha 😆
👍
So glad you saved a bit of that pine tree for a bench! When I saw that beautiful forked tree come down and watched the chain saw coming down the branch piece by piece, I was saying, "Don't cut it all up!" 😧😥 We used a similar forked pine tree in our house to hold up the loft area and it looks very cool 😎
Dan has a few projects in the pipeline for the wood. 👍
Glad you have friends to help you to fell the trees!
We are forever grateful. 😊👍
Many hands make lite work....👏👏☘
They sure do. 😊
well done all of you. Good to have some helping hands and smiling faces around 😊. And the wood will def keep you warm next winter 🔥
Thank you 😊. Wonderful to enjoy time with helpful friends. 👍
Absolutely 👍
John is funny we need more john
He is a funny man indeed. Maybe next year 👍😊
So much fun when friends come to help! I like that yellow round variety. They are good lemons.
Excellent. Love it when friends join in. 😊👍
Wish you a great start on the new year!
Love you guys
Happy new year!! Thank you 😊
"All I can see, is just a yellow lemon tree" 🍋
And I’m off singing the same old song again. 😉
What beautiful friends you have. Bet you all had a great laugh even though lots of hard work was done. Many hands make light work. I'm really enjoying watching your progress. Look forward to the next episode. Take care, Poo
Thank you 😊 We had a lot of fun 🤩
We had a great time together. See you in the next episode 😊
Those two ladies are the workhorses and the eye candy🤩😍👍🏻
Yall keep up the beautiful transformation.
Hope to see more of the gals!!!
Luv the bibs🤗
Wild n Wonderful WVa here
I ll keep watchn👀
Thank you. Lovely to have you here from W Va. 😊
Team work makes the dream work...great job guys :)
Yes it does!
Is amazing how much they have done. They must be so exhorted in the evening onnthe orher hand there is so much to do around as it is a big peces of land.
We are often exhausted. But, it is a good feeling when we see what we’ve achieved. 😊
Eline emeğine sağlık bu güzel vlog için kolay gelsin hayırlı işler....👍👍👍
👍😊
Those trees are covered in old mans beard. A type of lichen. It is a great antibiotic!
Thank you 😊
Awesome...💕
Grapes would look good behind the trees you just planted , you've already got the post and fence up. Maybe concord grapes. Just a thought.
Thank you. Yes, that fence was originally a vine trellis which we repaired last year. We’re putting new vines in. (I think you’re talking about Maggie’s Pear tree?) 🍇
Wooow beautiful video..
Love from India.. 👍💐
You are so kind
I agree with the others saying that you are so inspiring. You show that we don't have to still be wet behind the ears to make a small holding work.
Are those olive trees wild, or were they part of an old orchard.
All old olive trees, part of an olive grove.
Great work. Do you have any of the pines that produce pine nuts? Pinus pinea I think they are. Also would your climate grow pomegranates?
We do indeed. We planted 2 of the pine nut trees last year. They grow well around here as do pomegranates. We planted two different varieties of pomegranate trees. 👍😊
When chopping wood with an axe, you should keep the handle lower than the head of the axe, that way if the axe slips off the wood, it won't hit your foot.
Thank you for the tip. 😊
I love the pear tree planted in memory or Barney…❤. (There weren’t any partridges in them were there?😅)
Maybe one day there will be a partridge 😊

Muito bem, perfeito!
Obrigados 😊
When you plant trees, a stake at a 45 degree angle will help prevent root damage till the roots grow & anchor themselves into the soil - it’s better for the long-term health of the plant :)
A lot of work planting all these trees, looks like your planting them too deep, I hope they grow. Good Luck ❤ 25:14
Thank you.
Thank you! You too!
Nice pine tree felling and fruit/nut tree planting.
Was any of those straight trunks suitable for sawing into planks? or is pine not optimal for garden projects?
Thank you. Dan will use some for planks but it’s a very soft wood. Firewood and resin is what it has been grown for here. 👍🪵
WOW again. May I ask you did you show your house in the farm.?
Hi Kis, yes we showed around the inside in the video called, Exploring 150 year old abandoned farmhouse. 👍
@@NearbyVeggies thank you I found it.♥️
Hope you enjoyed our house tour. We have great big plans 😊
@@NearbyVeggies yes it will be exciting plan for both♥️🙏🌞
👍
Watch your toes when splitting logs. The axe can go too far. Steel toecaps essential.
Thank you 😊
Several rules to remember when planting trees (save your money if you are not going to follow them all. 1) never plant the root flair of the tree. When you get the tree out of the pot, brush the soil away until you see the flair immediately above where the roots start. The root flair must never be buried when planted. 2) The rule of 3's. 1. mulch with 3" of compost 2. make a 3 foot circle of mulch 3. pull the mulch back from the trunk 3" all the way around, 3) Make a circular tube out of welded wire that is at least 5' tall that you can drop over the tree. 4) Install one sturdy stake to support the cage. 5) use nylon wire ties to secure the cage t the stake at the top and bottom. 6) Deep watering required at least once a week through the first summer. 7) Keep the grass cut short around your trees taking care to never damage the bark. 8) Learn about pruning for optimal growth and fruit production. 9) Plant fruit and nut trees on 15' to 20' in all directions to prevent overcrowding of mature trees. Hope that helps! 😊
👍
R.I.P. medronho 🤣🤣🤣
Ele é um pequeno medronho agora 🤣
👋😀👍
👍😊
As árvores frutíferas que plantaram vão precisar de guias.
How do I contact you to arrange to perhaps come supply a few days of free labour?
Thank you for your enthusiasm and generosity, Richard. At the moment we’re only having close friends and family on the Quinta due to Dan’s work commitments. We really appreciate your kind offer.
We have email in the about section. 😊
Please be careful, do not cut Cork Oak Trees, they are protected trees therefore it is illegal to cut them in Portugal. In addition, their growth time is very long.
Abraço🤗
Thank you. Important information. We already know this and that we cannot cut down even dead cork oak or holm oak. We have mentioned this in our forest walk video which might bring a smile 😊 we have a few mature cork oaks.
🌟👏👍🍀💐 25:14
Thank you 😊
It's not Rocher but Rocha 😅
I think that’s why we’re laughing. We’re dreaming about fererro rocher chocolates. 🤣
Make sure to remove tag strings. If you don’t the wind twists them and it can girdle your tree and kill it after a couple years……I found this out the hard way 🙄
Thanks, Tamra.
that's a purple pear! roxo thats a color
Here in Portugal it’s a Pêra Rocha , the Rocha means rock. 😊
Hate seeing trees felled.
Totally understand. They are grown for firewood here and not native to the area. The wood is quite poor quality as it grows so fast. Taking them down will allow the native self seeded young trees a chance to develop.
Can't hear a thing of what your saying
👍
nature is not supose to be straight... sorry to see such beautifull trees going down.
We’re making room for native trees to grow.
@@NearbyVeggies ya I understand guys… I hope it will become what you wish.
Thank you 😊
Hi. Why can’t you just fell these trees with an axe, instead of polluting Portugal with a fuel-propelled chainsaw ? Aren’t you supposed to be nature-friendly?
Got to love the purists!
