  • Tim turns a bowl out of a block of frozen wood. He stored the wood outside in a bucket of water for a couple of years...because he forgot about it! Now he is chipping the frozen wood cube out and throwing it on the lathe. Better late than never...

    Dang Tim. I want some of you madrone. I live in Northern CA and have cut chucks from a freshly downed tree and in the time is took me to get home (Cut to seal time was maybe 20 minutes.) I had checks starting. And not tiny ones.

    I really like how you tell what you're doing and why. I am completely ignorant of wood turning but I really enjoy watching it. It's rather soothing but I always wonder about the things I'm seeing. Like how you explained why you did what you did when you started to make the inside of the bowl. Thanks much for the education.

    There are reasons we boil rough turned Madrone (about 1 hour per inch of thickness and let it cool in the water)

    Love the things you make. Have you considered making a new 'replica' of those vintage Holiday Nut Bowls? I have mom's and it's older than I am and I'm 67. You know the ones, with the center spindle that holds the nutcracker and the nut picks and the bark is left on the outside. Would love to see you make one someday...hint, hint. :)

    Beautiful piece, Tim. But why did you keep the wood in a bucket of water? You suggested that madrone is not susceptible to cracking and it looked like it was coated in wax or sealer but that may have just been the gunk you referred to or an anomaly of photography. In any case, looked good. I look forward to whatever you will make from the rest of the piece.

    why would you store this wood in water ?

    • @woodturningwithtimyoder
      @woodturningwithtimyoder  2 года назад +1

      Madrone has a tendency to warp and crack very easily when in a block form. So storing it in water keeps it from doing that. Well it does if you only store it for a little while and not 2 years!

    Great job. I love a solid bowl. With all your tools talents and time did you choose to round off a large chunk on the lathe? It must be easier on your tools and nerves to take off the corners on a band saw to rough it out further from there.

    why would you store a piece of wood in water for 2 years? wouldn't that just rot the wood and have a bunch of mold issues?

    Tim. Since it’s wet wouldn’t still crack turning it that wet?

    • @woodturningwithtimyoder
      @woodturningwithtimyoder  2 года назад

      I'm hoping that since it warped so much already that it might have released the stresses in the wood. Also Madrone is very resistant to cracking. Only time will tell though.
