I managed to break couple keys by removing them, so my suggestion to people who will attempt it: DON'T DO IT unless you're willing to risk your keys getting broken. Key mechanism and hooks on the key are quite delicate! Even if you will successfully do it couple times without breaking them, they will become weaker and eventually will break! It wasn't designed to be removed like that many times! Clean your keys without removing them. Replacing keyboard yourself is one of the most hardest and tedious things to do on the macbook. Going to Apple to replace it will be quite expensive.
You've no idea how relieved I felt when I searched on youtube for a how-to video, clicked on a random video, and suddenly saw your old intro. I've been a subscriber for a while and coming across this video brought back memories. Thanks for the tutorial!

Great video, very well explained. Guys, would recommend looking into how the key actually fits into the mechanism before inputting the mechanism to get a feel on how to snap it in - otherwise you will have already fitted the mechanism but could be struggling with fitting the actual key in!

You have no idea how useful has been this video to me. I have just bought a Mac Book Pro Retina a I spilled a little bit of coke over a part of the keyboard and now some of them are not functioning as they used to, because of the sugar. Thanks a lot!!!!. I thought this was going to be expensive because I live in a country where there are no to many places for repairing Macs.
FINALLY I find a video that clearly shows, nicely up close, exactly how to remove and replace the keys on my 2012 MacBook Pro, thank you! 🔥👍🏼 Now I just have to figure out how to *correctly clean* underneath the key, so that I can fix my 10 problem keys that are not 'registering' every time, when pressed 😆
A great, great video!....and no music to distract you while you perform these delicate operations!…it’s just not needed folks. Did you ever have music blaring out while you were in class?? And I don’t mean music class, obviously! You helped me revive my 2012 MB Pro's duff keys, so thank you, so much.
Many thanks for your very helpful video, I had a broken key top on my MacBook Pro and was quoted $350 by my local repair shop to replace the whole keyboard so instead I bought a keyboard for $12 off Amazon and did it myself saving over $300! Many thanks once again.
I was playing around with the "Q" key and it popped out! I wanted to die and spent like an hour without results... my dad 'd been so angry! you're a life saver
The intentions might be good, but this video really should be removed, or at least shortened before the MacBook Air part starts, or a warning should be added. Removing keys this way on a MacBook Air or pro retina 2012-2015 fatigues the plastic and the metal on the left and right bottom corners so that the keys come off way too easily after doing this. Instead, the keys should be removed by pulling the left and right bottom of the key cap so that only the cap comes off and not the plastic hinge. After that you might try to remove the plastic hinge more carefully. By following this video I broke several keys of my sister’s MacBook Pro retina mid 2014
I dented my "G" key recently when an glass decoration fell directly on it. I was completely devastated being that I've took such good care of it. Fortunately it still works, but with the help of your video, I may decide to replace it.

As you can see, working fine now!

first of all I love you! you saved me am expensive trip to a repair shop ( they ripped off the keyboard last time) and well now I know what in doing! thanks
Voidarg, the video is fine. It shows exactly how the switches and keys are attached. The problem is it shows the wrong techniques for removal... Techniques that will result in broken off switch retainers. Dealing with scissor switch keyboards requires experience and finesse that can't be taught. I've blown through multiple cheap-o scissor switch keyboards learning the safest removal and attachment techniques. And even still I occasionally break switches, be it snapping off a retainer or permanently separating the two elements. Honestly, you should never remove a scissor switch unless you know what you're doing or are trying to replace an already broken switch.
I actually broke my R key. I haven't had it fixed since I broke it a year ago. Ive just improvised with some tape and kept the parts underneath and it seems to work perfectly fine.
I wouldn't recommend doing this. I tried it and the scissor mechanism came off with it on the Enter Key and the Period Key. I couldn't reapply it myself so I took it to Apple where they couldn't reapply them correctly because some small pieces had broken off. They sent it off for repair and didn't tell them that I had spilled liquid in the keyboard or that I removed the keys myself. I got lucky that they did not notice water damage and fixed it for free. Once you break off pieces so the keys can't be reapplied correctly you have to replace the entire top case ($300) if you want the keys fixed. I wouldn't risk it.
OMG!! Thank you so much! My fat, arthritic fingers had a really hard time reassembling the 'scissoring' mechanism, but I persisted, and now it's good! I'm in a very rural area, closest Mac Store is hundreds of miles away. So, on behalf of clumsy geezers in the boonies, thank you!!!!

I expected to see information on the 12-inch macbook here as "MacBook" was in the title but I guess you meant to the big white ones. Have any tips on how to remove and replace a key on the 2015 MacBook's butterfly switches?
I put the key back in, but the hinge was already attached to the key, so I put them both back in at the same time. It works, but the rubber part underneath seems more sensitive than the other keys, and I don't even have to fully press it to get a response. Should I start over?
I cleaned my Macbook keyboard with a "Lysol Sanitary Handwipe", normally used for disinfecting your hands. These wipes are damp, not wet, so no water runs into the electronics. I rubbed the wipe over the keyboard and all the dirt came off very easily. I have cleaned 3 keyboards like this and each one looks like brand new. To clean a keyboard takes about 1 minute.
this video was VERY helpful. i just got my macbook air a couple of months ago and all of a sudden my "E" key was not clicking, i was worried i would have to take it back to apple and deal with the Apple support. anyway, now its back to perfect, thanks :)
Thank you very much! Your video helped me to replace a broken mechanism from key "J", which i use very ofter (usually i type in Russian language) to "\", which i use much rarer, so i have no problem with typing anymore :)
Can you please advise because I have to replace the up/down keys which link together(?). what process do you suggest? Thanks for a great clear video btw.

Thank you for this very helpful tutorial. My dog likes to sit in my lap and watch videos - especially ones that have dogs, horses, etc. He gets VERY excited, and in his excitement, paws at my MacBook Pro. I'm usually able to restrain him enough to avoid damage, but this time, his claw caught one of my keys, and he ripped it clean off. Luckily I was able to find both the key cap and the hinge mechanism. But without your helpful video, I would never have figured out how to get everything back in working order. Thank you!

Thanks!! I just went to my Apple Retail Store and they wanted to charge me $300 to "replace" my keyboard. I just followed your video, and my macbook pro is back on the game!
"phillips flathead"?
contraction in terms.
i'm pretty sure you mean "flathead".
excuse me, but my head isn't flat.
this helped me so much, my sster accidently dropped maple syrup on my laptop and since i have an old one no other videos could help, so thank you so much
My cat ripped my "O" key off, how do I know which is the right side up??
you see that little parenthesis thing on top of the O? if its facing left, its the right side up.
@Ariana IsMyNickname oh shit
I guess you dont need to know the right side up then. either way is fine.
You rocked my world tonight! THANK YOU!!!
Thanks I just fixed mine with the help of vdo. Was stressed due to lockdown. I thought I won’t b able to do it myself but u made my day.
thank you ...mistakenly i take my O key out while cleaning ..i thought i have to spend money to fix it..but i fixed it by myself with the help of this video..thanx again..
Even all this time later, it's still useful. Fixing my 2012 Macbook pro as we speak. Thanks!
Saved my day and a trip to the genius bar!! Thank you for such an excellent tutorial!!
THANK YOU!!!! Wonderful person!!!!!! My 'Y' button was acting up and I managed to get it back on thanks to your video. You are amazing!!!!!!
very good tutorial for real, 3 mins short but you still get the information needed.
Thanks! I watched numerous vids... and yours was the one that made it clear. Problem fixed!
Wow after 10 years youtube just notified me this vid. Great Yutube!!!
this video was VERY helpful. i just got my macbook air a couple of months ago and all of a sudden my "E" key was not clicking, i was worried i would have to take it back to apple and deal with the Apple support. anyway, now its back to perfect, thanks :)
Thanks for your tutorial! This really helped me out! I was just about to take the computer to the applestore and spend a a poop ton of money! Thank you for helping me save my mac!
Thank you!
