Thank you for your videos, I am learning a lot by watching and reading from your website. I think I will try both to create a bonsai and to buy one and the idea of creating many is beautiful!
If you're having trouble buying plants, I've been using wild saplings to practice bonsai. It's kind of hit-or-miss but I've had success with it. The only store bought bonsai I had died in two weeks because it wasn't even wrapped, they just bound the roots for some reason and I didn't know until I had to repot it. It's hanging on with a few leaves but I don't have much hope.
Theres a maple tree in my yard, a sugar maple I believe, that's seeds have fallen. I found a pot and some soil and planted the seeds and left them outside and now they are sprouting! I am currently replanting the little saplings in little plastic bonsai trays and plan to learn more and more as I go.
No. They need things you cant replicate indoors without spending a fortune (seasons, dormancy, difference in temperature between day and night, etc etc)
Hi . aim living in New Zealand and its summer hear now and wants to do some airlaerings now can u tell me from how young branches can i use to airlaer from thanks for all the help and time to come back to us
I have a question that I cannot seem to find the answer to please help. What kind of soil do you want to use for Bonsai development and growth? I see many sites selling bonsai soil, but I am not sure if this soil is for use SOLELY during refinement stage or if it is also ok to use for growth. I am hoping to grow medium sized bonsai. Should i just use standard potting soil? Could I just go outside and dig up dirt? I have invested in some liquid plant fertilizer and a 3in1 moisture/ph/light meter THANKS!
Hi John, some Bonsai experts do have a mixture for trees in development that is different from those in refinement stages - but the differences are small. Our standard recommended mix of Pumice, lava rock and akadama (1:1:1) works for trees in all stages in development. If you want to save money for younger trees, you could use less akadama perhaps. Dont use a soil mixture that is very compact/dense (like the dirt you mention) as this will slow down growth.
Super helpful! I have thought abt getting one but then my family moved and I have not thought abt getting one again till now What's a good tree to start out with?
I want to start my own Kabudachi-style Bonsai with a variety of the japanese maple. Where can I get cuttings or young seedlings if I don't have an older tree already? Does a nursery or garden shop sell seedlings this young and which variety of maple should I go for (small leaves)?
I think most specialized bonsai stores will sell these, regular garden centers/nurseries also could offer these - you best just drop by and ask I guess. And varieties, its up to you really, I particularly like Acer palmatum but the options are endless!
I live in a VERY rainy place, Rosebery, Tasmania- almost 2000mm a year. Should I cover the bases of outdoor plants, and leave the leaves to the elements (pun..? intended).
@@bonsaiempire thanks for that. It’s also in the mountains, but only just a bit over 100m alt. Averages 3-11C in winter. Anyway, I joined the website and am starting at the beginners course, I look forward to being part of the community. It would be great to see some sales occasionally too…😁
Last fall I've got a trident maple of about 8 years old. It was leafless and I kept it inside watering it every now and then. Now, end of march it still hasnt shown any sign of life. Is it dead? What went wrong?
If you really knew about Bonsai, you would know that Bonsai in Japanese means a "miniature tree." Therefore, adding "tree" after Bonsai is redundant. My father studied with John Naka in the mid 1970's. It takes YEARS to train and care for a Bonsai.
Hi Lisa - potted plant is the literal translation. But you are right, tree is redundant - but an important thing people are looking for that are just starting out with Bonsai.
I’m really glad I found this website. All the information on the website and RUclips are all immensely informative, thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
The hardest part when I started was definitely being patient and not mess around with your trees too often haha
so true. Number one cause of death for bonsais is attention. If you start killing trees, buy more. 😝
I agree! And the solution to get more trees might be funny, but it does work right? :-)
@@bonsaiempire it does but now I have to find a more cost efficient organic fertilizer because Biogold is getting more expensive lol!

Very nice !!! top !
Will grow lights allow you to have outdoor trees indoors and still allow them to thrive?
No. They need things you cant replicate indoors without spending a fortune (seasons, dormancy, difference in temperature between day and night, etc etc)
Super thanks from indonesia
Most welcome :)

Its a bit species specific - I think it is more about diameter than age, you'll need a branch at least a centimeter thick.
Okay love the vid n all but is there like a how to fertilize for dummies I got everything down but tha park were in mid spring now
I think this page might help you: www.bonsaiempire.com/basics/bonsai-care/fertilizing

Wow! You'll need a very porous soil mix and perhaps place your trees dry when rain is expected.
