I increased my hourly rate from $25 to $75 when I brought a large format console and I was turning away work I got so busy. Even though its largely aesthetics, people will drive a long way and pay good money to say their music was mixed on a Neve or SSL.
You also have to factor in running costs when owning a big console, something which is often overlooked. These consoles usually have to be on all the time and consume a LOT of electricity.
Coming to the point in my career where a console is looking like a good investment for tracking multiple instruments and takes on a dedicated piece of gear with eq, compression and mic pre’s
The best thing I've done is get a console for recording. Yeah, you can do a lotta things in the box and I do create trap beats in the box as well as mix/master in the box but using a console is just different. It's the best of both worlds. Also, it kinda fosters mixing with your ears as opposed to mixing with your eyes which never really turns out too well.
I went the other way. I got rid of my mixing desk and all the outboard in favour of an all digital in the box system. Nothing better than starting your work in the studio, listening back on the train, working on it in the hotel, in your bedroom, on the beach etc. Computers have made our lives so much better and more convenient. You won't hear people wanting to go back to cars with no airbags, no powersteering, no diagnostics and leaded petrol. Also mixing with your eyes is so much better. You can see the whole audio spectrum, you can automate everything and great smart plugins will not only make your life easier but cut your costs down so much.
Cost, space, recall, mobility all favor ITB. Sound Quality digital vs. analog - don't think this battle will ever stop, but I will say this, we can hear 20hz-20khz, which is under 44.1 sample rate, we have standard sample rates as high as 192, I don't think analog or digital is better, just different - people have gotten so used to the sound of electronics passing current and artifacts, that we've heard over the years, so much so, that anything else feels cold & lifeless. That's why we add vinyl & tape saturation to our mixes. I've had my fill of large format consoles, but I won't knock anyone who still wants to use them. At the same time, don't knock those who mix ITB, because at the end of the day, better talent will out mix you on either one.
We did well with ITB mixing or digital for years until manufacturers found new ways to fleece us and flooded the audio engineering world with analogue evangelists and the crazy lust over big names like Neve and SSL. One man's warmth is another man's muddy. It's all fashion. We went from analogue warmth/muddy/noisy to digital clean, clarity, air, space and now back again. I promise you the obsession with 'fake' analogue sound (with plugins and yes I am being a bit cheeky here) and real analogue sound too, will wear off and we'll all rush towards the next big thing in audio lol. It's all good and fun and exciting but it's still fashion driven.
I’ve had a console for a long time and I prefer it personally. However last time I had someone over to track they complained. The console was doing its analog thing and naturally there was some idle noise prior to the song starting. The singer got really bothered by it and said WHAT IS THAT NOISE? So sometimes folks expect digital silence on analog gear.
Workflow depends on YOUR personal preference. All in the box workflow can be so much better than working with a console. If all you know is analogue and consoles then you'll be dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century and be harping on about how consoles and outboard is so much better than in the box. These sorts of arguments are like football fans arguing about their teams. Neither is better than the other as it's totally subjective. It is of course a nice way to get video views as people on RUclips love the constant back and forth between them.
Yes unfortunately to continue production you will need to purchase this console you have lost you DPL(digital producer lisense). I will consider giving it back to you if u buy console k
Earn the money from cheaper gear first. My advice? Buy some nice instruments (include guitar amps) that customers can play with. Those are more attractive than consoles.
RealHomeRecording.com I agree. While I love the idea of purchasing a console, I think it’s wise to have quality instruments. In many cases, especially for those just getting started in marketing themselves as an engineer, you will most likely be working with bands that have subpar gear. Having quality, well maintained instruments for them to use will ultimately help the quality of your recordings, even without a console.
Spot on! Their preachers have preached for years the false myths about digital but forget that unless you're making acoustic or music with guitars and amps, everything else is digital lol
you dont need a practical reason to have a console. i am more than happy to work with absolutely no hardware besides a sound card. but when you walk into a studio with a large console, as a musician or engineer it makes you feel like.. yes lets get down to it
Honestly if you go into a space with a beautiful console filled with touchscreens, joysticks and futuristic vibes you'll feel exactly the same. It all boils down to the aesthetics
These consoles are cool but honestly the workflow is so dumb and dated. For once when I use logic I can easily call up old setting within seconds while this I dont think there is any recall. A UAD system for todays actual working producers would be much better for todays producers. The only major leg up the consoles have on this stuff is sound quality and tacility. That would be cool if one of these companys collaborated with avid or somthing to make a hybrid console I think SSl made the aws but its 100,000k. Anways I think all of this excessive stuff to get analouge sounds is not worth it. I think the ssl 6 is a good example of this its routing is so confusing like why use it honestly. I dont even known what the point of this commet is anymore but we need more forward thinking companys like beringer that make products that are cost effective and work together in a good ecosystem with the sounds of the analouge big boys.
If you're tracking live musicians, you set the gain, compression, and EQ *on the way in* and not only while tweaking/mixing. Once you get a good balance, you can record that and it's in some way "pre-mixed" (and then you do real mixing after, of course, but it's much easier if the recording sounds better to begin with. Sort of like saving channel strips in Logic and then using the same channel strip on every kick channel across multiple songs, instead you can set up the console in the morning for the band when you get a good sound, you just hit record and track it all, no channel strips needed, no tweaking from song to song, etc etc.
Yes.. these analog consoles are mainly used for tracking like most of the big old SSL's/API's/Neves still out there in private studios. I mean who in their right mind would pay the electricity for something they hardly use.. right :)
"never have down time with a console" lmao what a joke of a sentence. everyweek a different strip, pot, button or something is broken on these older consoles
With these newer modular consoles he's not really wrong, pull out the problem channel and replace it with a spare and you're good to go, then fix the old one when you have the time. Older consoles though you have a point, those can be a bitch and a half to deal with.
I increased my hourly rate from $25 to $75 when I brought a large format console and I was turning away work I got so busy. Even though its largely aesthetics, people will drive a long way and pay good money to say their music was mixed on a Neve or SSL.
This will probably the only reason I want to own a console.
What did you buy bro?
@@youaintgottheanswerssway1594 D&R Triton 32 inline. Cost about $10k 5-years ago. Prolly worth a lot more now, dunno.
I will pick one of those up. I gotta check the credit limit on my Sweetwater card first.

Not so true for new modern console, their electricty consumption is getting very low nowadays
We use a modern silence PSU on our SSL, that reduce the Power consumtion ovet 50 % and we shut down the console after work.
Coming to the point in my career where a console is looking like a good investment for tracking multiple instruments and takes on a dedicated piece of gear with eq, compression and mic pre’s
You probably just need a summing mixing and some 500 series Mucho cheaper

For me it is having a console with DAW capability. Working on a console for me is like playing the drums. It is a part of the music experience.
Those are valid arguments toward using console. Respect
Neve 5088 Sweeeeeeeet, I'll get one as soon as I win the lottery.
Looking at the 8424 for my next console.

Seems like the same thing us DJs go though now. Denon dj makes the laptop go away too and connect with your audience

Perhaps but you incur the cost of at least equal value of the mixer on outdoors and other facilities that it requires
Answer - there is no reason to spend $100k on a console except that clients expect you to spend $100k on a console.
I make deep house in abelton. Do I need this?

For professional studios its an essential piece of equipment. It’s also a tax write off and it will pay for itself, and then some, over time.
LOL There are no more studios so now they have to go after the consumer market. Used car salesman in need to pay their rent.
