  • Launched in February 2022, Brave Conversations in SoTL is a collaborative speakers’ series that brings together an international slate of scholars to discuss ideas around critical approaches to themes of epistemic justice, students as knowers, and threshold experiences in higher education.
    March’s event brings two speakers to offer discussion and exploration on teaching and learning research and scholarship. Dr. Hornsby’s presentation is titled In Pursuit of socially-just Pedagogy: a possibility in Partnership? Maisha Islam will share her thoughts about Bravery in the face of adversity? Critical reflections of liberatory-based partnership.
    Dr Hornsby (he/him) is a Professor in the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs and the Associate Vice-President (Teaching and Learning) at Carleton University. A passionate educator, David has lived and worked abroad for much of his career has held faculty positions at University College London, UK, and the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), Johannesburg South Africa. David holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge and has taught and published extensively in the areas of international relations and pedagogy in higher education. His recent publications include a co-edited special section of the International Journal of Students as Partners entitled: Partnership in Fostering Socially-Just Pedagogies.
    Maisha Islam is the Research Culture Lead (Equality, Diversity and Inclusion) at the University of Southampton’s Doctoral College, whilst also studying for a professional doctorate in Education. Maisha’s main research interests lie in the area of Black, Asian, and minority ethnic student experience, and Muslim student sense of belonging/student voice in Higher Education, where she presents, writes, and has published on these topics. Maisha is heavily invested in the area of race and religious equality in Higher Education. For example, Maisha has sat on Universities UK staff panels which developed guidance for universities tackling racial harassment and Islamophobia on campus. Additionally, Maisha is also the co-Chair of the Research England/Office for Students BAME PGR Steering Group and has recently finished a two-year term on the Office for Students’ Student Panel.
