One thing I really like about alchemy as a power system is essentially any alchemist can do what any other alchemist can do, as long as they understand what they are doing and can recreate the transmutation circle. The only exception to this is people who have opened the gate. Also a unique form of alchemy Edward figured out is soul alchemy where he can kinda break the rules on a small scale at the cost of his own lifespan he can use his own soul as a 1 soul philosopher stone. Gotta love a universe where the most dangerous dude is a chemistry major with some chalk

Soul binding is always temporary. We saw this with Al near the end of the story and it was mentioned at laboratory 5 too. It's a short life span and while Greed speculated that with enough skill you could just switch from vessel to vessel as they rejected it this was never explored. Also Ed gave up his arm for Al's soul. Father points out that Truth always picks an ironic punishment. Ed wanted to stand and protect his mother and brother and Al wanted to feel his mother's warmth again. Sensei lost her ability to ever have another child and Mustang lost his ability to see a brighter future for Amestris.

Completely underrated explanation of why people lost certain things. Im sure all this was released during the dialogue, its something easy to miss
And if we use Al as a benchmark, he lost his body at 10 and he is about 16 ish by the end of the show, and starts to feel the effects. So we could postulate that a soul has about anywhere between 5-7 years before the soul breaks away.
At around 4:20 you state "..Father is the thechnical power source for all alchemy in Amestris". This is not correct. What Father did was to extend tubes all along Amestris and he pumps philosopher stone in them to be able to "turn on/off" alchemy in the area. You can see this is the case because towards the end one of the biggest plots is them activating a nation wide circle to counter this "off" effect Father was sure to activate so they couldn't use alchemy. When the counter transmutation circle is activated you can see they are able to use alchemy again, and not only that but at a more powerful level because it wasn't being dumpened by Father anymore. Please refer to episode 61 from approximately 12:40 to 14:40. You can see the activation of the circle, the main characters being able to use alchemy again and the explanation Scar gives about what kind of energy source does each type of alchemy uses.

Dunno where he's getting that Father powers all alchemy. The alchemists weren't lying, they get their power from tectonic movement. It's just that he spread his philosopher stone throughout Amestris, creating a barrier between the alchemists and the plates that he can turn on and off
In fact, after Hoenheim destroyed that barrier Alchemy got a lot more powerful.
I simply want to say ever since I found your page a year ago, I cannot get enough of your content. Your research, presentation, voice presentation, and most importantly your undeniable passion in how you talk about everything presents in my opinion (and I watch A LOT of channels) the best anime content channel period. Father's Stone isn't the sole source of Amestrian alchemical energy. If it were, all Amestrian alchemy would produce red lightning. The tectonic plates thing is true, it's just that Father spread his Stone between the plates and the surface to throttle the power of Amestrian alchemists as he pleases. It's basically the exact opposite of what you said in the video

What are your thoughts on Nick calling Envy’s shape-shifting alchemy when Homunculi are specifically stated to be incapable of using it? Referencing the anime, potentially, meant using Wrath as a loophole, however, that all changes, once Ed’s limb were no longer apart of his body.
Follow-up, if you watch the anime four times, do you prefer it to Brotherhood; whether because of nostalgia, etc..?
@@ObiKwabKenobi Actually I do consider the Homunculi's abilities to be very specific applications of alchemy specific to each of them. They aren't capable of broader alchemical use, true, but things like shapeshifting and creating diamond from bodily carbon are definitely alchemical in nature. I think of it like the ones who can do those things have alchemical arrays baked into their cores, like pale imitations of clapping alchemy.
Also I was referring to Brotherhood when I said I'd seen it four times.

@@slevinchannel7589 Doesn't really come into it because the rules of the setting don't allow someone that kind of destructive power without using a Philosopher's Stone or an alchemical array literally the size of a country. It's kind of a chicken and egg problem; they can't get that kind of force to channel into alchemy without using alchemy to obtain the energy in the first place. And highly immoral alchemy at that.
And don't talk about bringing someone like Goku or Saitama in here. For one, they don't need alchemy to destroy things and for two, they flatly ignore energy conservation to the same degree that FMA alchemy requires it. This ain't Death Battle.

As for mustang, he isn't creating pure oxygen persay. He splits the water molecules in the air into hydrogen and oxygen, which then explosively recombine. This is necessary because pure oxygen won't burn without a fuel source, as it's an oxidizer.

I always loved the idea of a cooking alchemist, ( maybe related to berry the butcher ? ) that could like transmute bone marrow into soup stalk and perfectly liquify fat and tenderize/cook meet.
I think the most impressive part of Scar's brother's alchemy is that you don't need to be an alchemist to use it. The rule is that circles need to be really detailed or you need to know what you're doing exactly. Hence why Ed's alchemy is pretty much always a basic mental circle, he knows his stuff. But scar's tattoos are so detailed that you don't even need basic alchemy knowledge to use them expertly

In short, his master had discovered the mass-energy equation, as well as nuclear physics.
E=MC², and the common equations for nuclear fission and fusion, are actually written in those tattoos. It’s just that these details are not easy to find in comics or animations (after all, they are just a few lines of text hidden in large graphics)

Re: Pyrokenesis, you are so close... fire requires three things: A source of heat, a fuel, and oxygen. So, in Mustang's case, it would be: A spark for a source of heat, hydrogen ripped from water in the air/carbon ripped from CO2 in the air, etc. for fuel, and the oxygen remaining from all of those prior reactions for, well, oxygen.

I think you're sleeping on transmuting guns. Not only are they making a gun, their creating the gunpowder as well which has like nitre and sulfur and other stuff in, which if they chose to focus on that aspect can do some creative things

Funny thing is that Roy's actual alchemy is air not fire. You said so yourself what he actually does is make tubes of pure oxegen, or other flammable gas,for the regular spark or flame to catch on fire.
On a side note i actually love how basically every alchemist carries their preferred circle on something. It is just an easy and effective work around and it does sometimes lead to some interesting design choices, like scar's arm tattoo and the silver alchemist's hands.

Im so glad we got both FMA and FMA:B. Both were excellent, though brotherhood was probably overall better IMO (aside from a few parts)
You dont get the connection between father and alchemy on amestris. Alchemy on amestris draws the energy from tectotic plates, fathers disrupting that through his philosophers stone thats why there so many pipe underground so he can shut off alchemy on his area. The reason why scars brother did his research was to destroy that disruption so alchemist can fully harness the energy from tectonic plates.

So... if Mustangs alchemy is focused on controlling the concentration of oxygen in such an intricate way. When he can't make a spark due to rain or whatever, couldn't he like still manipulate oxygen to a deadly extent, either concentrating the oxygen to make the air poisonous or desaturate the air to suffocate you.. the actual circles aren't damaged by the water so he should still have some kind of teick

Soul bond alchemy also has the problem that the alchemist fuels the soul instead of the soul fueling itself unless it is done with a philosopher stone
For physics envy would break thermodynamics thus breaking a rule he doesn’t give off immense heat for how compressed his density is with the potentiality to be a sun or black hole. Similar to the Pokémon physics video done by Game Theory
I'm a little disappointed we didn't get edward/gated generalist alchemy on this list as becoming your own alchemy circle (or clapping alchemy) is demonstrably the most powerful alchemy method save philosophers stones.
Side note: Father wasn't the alchemical source (in the manga at least, didn't see anime.) Instead what he had done was create a barrier under amestris that could seperate Alchemists from the techtonic energy that powered them and maintained it at partial power for the entire series to limit the power available to the Alchemists of amestris.

They already know how to give animalistic traits to humans through alchemy, but creating an animal with humanistic traits would open up a new venue of combat.
I mean, fire alchemy is the goat. It's stated in the story itself and the feats are there (mustang destroying stones)
