    The Chevrolet Chevelle is a mid-sized automobile which was produced by Chevrolet in three generations for the 1964 through 1977 model years. Part of the General Motors (GM) A-body platform, the Chevelle was one of Chevrolet's most successful nameplates. Body styles include coupes, sedans, convertibles and station wagons. Super Sport versions were produced through the 1973 model year, and Lagunas from 1973 through 1976. After a four-year absence, the El Camino was reintroduced as part of the new Chevelle lineup in 1964. The G-body Monte Carlo, introduced in 1970, also used a platform that was based heavily on the Chevelle platform, although it was lengthened ahead of the firewall. The Malibu, the top of the line model through 1972, completely replaced the Chevelle nameplate for the redesigned, downsized 1978 model year.
    The automobile marketplace was changing significantly during the early 1960s and became highly competitive in the smaller-sized car segments.[4] The domestic Big Three automakers (General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler) were responding to the success of American Motors' compact Rambler American and Classic models that made AMC the leading maker of small cars for several years and increasing Rambler on the 1961 domestic sales charts to third-place behind Chevrolet and Ford.[5] The innovative Chevrolet Corvair and the Chevy II, which was designed to compete with Ford's Falcon, were losing ground.[6] Ford released the mid-sized Fairlane in 1962, to which Chevrolet responded with the 1964 Chevelle based on a new A platform design.[6] Riding on a 115-inch (2,900 mm) wheelbase, the new Chevelle was similar in size, simplicity, and concept to the standard-sized 1955-1957 Chevrolet models.[6] The Chevelle was the U.S. auto industry's only all-new car for 1964 and was positioned to fill the gap between the small Chevy II and the full-sized Chevrolet models.[7] Introduced in August 1963 by "Bunkie" Knudsen, the Chevelle filled the gap for Chevrolet with sales of 338,286 for the year.[8]
    Two-door hardtop coupes, and convertibles, four-door sedans, and four-door station wagons were offered throughout the entire run. This also included a coupe utility (El Camino) which was a derivative of the two-door wagon. In line with other Chevrolet series, the two-door hardtops were called Sport coupes. Four-door hardtops, dubbed Sport Sedans, were available (1966 through 1972). A two-door station wagon was available in 1964 and 1965 in the base 300 series. Station wagons were marketed with exclusive nameplates: Greenbrier (previously used with the Corvair based vans), Concours, and Concours Estate. Six-cylinder and V8 power was offered across the board. Chevelles were also assembled and sold in Canada. While similar to their stateside counterparts, the convertible was available in the base Chevelle series, a model never offered in the United States. The Chevelle was the basis for the Beaumont, a retrimmed model sold only in Canada by Pontiac dealers through 1969. Originally conceived as an upsizing of the Chevy II with a unibody platform (similar to the Fairlane and the full-size Chrysler B-platform of the same era) which originated with the XP-726 program, GM's "senior compact" A-platform used a body-on-frame construction using a suspension setup similar to its full sized automobiles with a four-link rear suspension (the differential has four control arms which are attached to the frame with rear coil springs sandwiched between the differential and spring pocket-this design was used with the B platform vehicles and later used by Ford Motor Company with its FOX platform automobiles).
    Modified stock car racing, also known as modified racing and modified, is a type of auto racing that involves purpose-built cars simultaneously racing against each other on oval tracks. First established in the United States after World War II, this type of racing was early-on characterized by its participants' modification of passenger cars in pursuit of higher speeds, hence the name.
    There are many sanctioning bodies for modifieds, each specifying different body styles and engine sizes.
    Modified racing began as race drivers modified their cars to gain a competitive advantage over their fellow competitors. What started out as minor modifications to the cars has now grown to the point that some modified classes are no longer based on any current production vehicles. NASCAR was instrumental in modified racing's beginnings.

    I remember a story in Car Model Magazine about putting dirt tread on these AMT drag slicks. Cut a strip of aluminum window screen after turning it 45 degrees to get a diamond tread. Lay it on a cookie sheet. Heat it with a propane torch. When it glows red roll the vinyl tire along the strip, melting the pattern into the tire. Let it cool and sand down the rough edges. This was before the Mongram 1/24 sprint cars which have fantastic dirt racing tires but you'll have to replace the sprint car wheels.
    Cheers!

    You've got me back into model kit building! I bought a Ford Gran Torino the other week and it turned out great. I haven't built a kit since I was a teenager in the 90's, it was an Oldsmobile 442, I remember it well. So I just bought another kit, a Ford Galaxy police car. I'm going to do it in the style of a beat up 70's New York Taxi cab. I forgot how much I enjoyed this hobby!

    I am so glad I watched your video before building this kit. I’ve got two of the carney plastic display cases. One is filled with nascar builds ( tilted display) second one (not tilted) is half nascar and other four rows are a row of mustangs with hydro dip paint. A row of funny cars a row of dirt track modified ( Vega , 34 Ford and to be built pinto.) the last row are the modified dirt ( with dirt) racers. This build is the last of the dirt modified for the case. So you saved me a lot of problems. I started this reply just to thank you for another great tip , but got a little off track. I used the super clean for my rust oleum nozzles , it works great! Thanks again

    Hello, I really like the back ground for the car in the slide show, adds a lot to the feel. I noticed the dotted lines going from the back of the front frame members through the fire wall to the roll cage and the dotted line from the bottom of the fire wall to the floor pan front. With all the kits you build I'm sure you saw that too. With the metal axel going through the bottom of the engine it dates the kit to the 60's. The molds are in great shape for the age. I did not see any flash at all. With all the kits they have in this theme you could build them all and have a line up getting to race at the starting line. All you would need is a nice background to finish the feel. Great job really enjoyed it. Thank you very much.

    An even easier fix to the body fit is to reposition the rear axle on top of the leaf springs instead of below them. This also alleviates the problem of the drive shaft having to angle down well below the floor pan to reach the axle. When you lift the rear axle the shaft is now straight in line with the engine.

    I’m puzzled as to why the rear leaf springs sit over the axle and not under. That’s not a mistake you made. That’s what the instructions told you to do. I’m just thinking of a way others could lower the rear. Great simple build for someone or like you said a kit bash. Good build 👍🏻

    • @hpiguy
      @hpiguy  4 года назад +1

      Shave off the mounts and glue the axle on the top if you desired.
      I try to build them as close to the directions as possible, save for BIG issues like the rollcage not letting the body down at all.

    When I saw the box, the post apoc idea came to me, but with the body. I wanted to say it to you, and then you go out with the same idea, albeit without the body. lol It's a nice kit, however, even with the cut you did, it seems to sit a tad too high at the rear IMO. That said, you did another great build.

    • @hpiguy
      @hpiguy  4 года назад

      You could always mount the axle above the springs, it would help a lot.
