  • Hiking Kauai | Kalepa Ridge Lihue - Secret Hike Only Locals Know!
    Today we ventured out to find an amazing hike that is easily assessable by bus for those who want to save a little extra money or don't have a car. Kauai is known for its amazing nature and hiking since it is less populated than the other islands. If you are visiting Kauai and need something cool to add your vacation itinerary, we suggest hiking!
    Kalepa Ridge in Hanamaulu, Lihue Kauai is a popular dirt bike, trail running, and hiking destination. We've gone to the top of Kalepa Ridge many times and use it primarily as a running route but we have never explored the rest of the ridgeline. It turned out to be an epic adventure.
    Overall to hike the entire ridgeline it is about 9 to 10 miles depending on the route you take. Since these paths are mostly made by dirt bikers, they aren't real trails and are not well marked. It's easy to get lost up here. To ensure that you are headed in the right direction be sure to always be heading north or south depending which way you are hiking.
    The good news about this hike is that it is scenic the entire time. You do not need to hike the full ridgeline to see some views. You can choose to only summit Kalepa or go as far on the ridgeline as you can. If you are looking for a convenient and customizable hike to add to your Kauai, Hawaii vacation, this hike is perfect for you.
    Couple of things to keep in mind when choosing this hike:
    - Dirt Bikes are loud and come up quick, be on high alert and be ready to jump out of the way
    - The lava rock is very brittle and can easily break under your feet
    - Brings lots of water, we brought three liters and still ran out
    We highly suggest checking out this hike if you are in the Lihue area. It was so easy to get to, fun, and full of adventure.
    Thank you for watching,
    Hannah and Richard

    I live on Kauai and my sisters came over tonight and we started talking about our childhood years. We searched videos of Kalepa and found this video. At the start of your hike there were 3 houses on the same spot where that water tank is. My grandfather worked as a supervisor for the sugar plantation so he managed those houses. The house we lived in was a two story colonial type home... We roamed that mountain and remember those views. It was paradise living there. Watching your video made me reminisce. Thanks for sharing 👍🏼🙏

    I used to live in Hawaii for 3 years and this video was a tear jerker. I miss it so much! Definitely paradise on earth. I didn't make it to Kauai But I've been to the big island, Maui and Oahu. Hiking in Hawaii is the best bc of the scenery payoff and you don't have to worry about wildlife

      I’m glad we could help conjure up some good memories! That’s awesome that you used to live in Hawaii. We’ve talked about moving here a lot but I think we’ve decided that it’s not the best fit for our adventurous personalities. Once you’ve done all the hikes you have to fly to hike more.

    I have been to Hawaii and many of the other islands, but not Kauai. Thank you for sharing your hiking adventure. I can imagine how exhausted you were afterwards! The view was beautiful. This video brought back many memories of our honeymoon to Hawaii back in 2009. We can't wait to return! The view of the valley at the end was everything!

      That’s so great! I’ve only been to Kauai but I’ve heard Kauai is the best of you enjoy nature. It’s less populated and crowded so there’s more of the land to enjoy. I love it on this island. Hope you get a chance to visit!

      You should totally try hiking some time! It doesn't have to be up an epic mountain or anything difficult, just a simple intentional walk in nature. It really does wonders for you! Helps you meditate, focus, and relax. It is also so rewarding!

    I love watching your channel! One because Hawaii is absolutely breathtaking and I have no idea when I’ll be able to make the trip out there but also because of how knowledge you guys are about the area. As a complete non hiker is the hike back down as miserable as I’m thinking it is in my head? Lol 😂

    • @WildandGrowing
      @WildandGrowing  4 года назад

      Thank you so much! Usually I look forward to the hike back down because its downhill! This hike there was so many ups and downs that it wasn't really back down at all, it really was 10 miles up and down. We got lost at one point, but other than that it actually went a lot quicker than we thought. Both of us decided that we had to go to the local 7-eleven to get some cold refreshing drink. We ran out of water and were in desperate need of some sugary pick me up.

    Any tips for traveling by bus?

    • @WildandGrowing
      @WildandGrowing  4 года назад +1

      Yes! When we visit Kauai, we have to travel primarily on the bus system since we come for too long to afford a rental car. Richard takes the bus to and from work and we use it to go to beaches regularly. Although, it doesn't get to that many hiking destinations you can still use it to get around town. The bus generally comes every hour and it costs $2 per ride or $40 for a monthly pass.
      You can find a schedule for it at www.kauai.gov/BusSchedules as well as a map. There are a few busses that go through Lihue (the biggest city in Kauai) and one that goes to the south shore and to the north shore. There is also a Lihue Shuttle that circles around Lihue that is only 50 cents per ride. We highly recommend taking advantage of the bus system! We do, however, rely on borrowing friends cars and other means to get to most hiking trails. Many people take the bus and then walk or hitchhike to the trailhead. Hope that helps you out!

    What they fail to mention is that these trails are designated as MTB trails. If you choose to hike here be aware of us Mountain Bikers that may be coming around the next blind corner, especially on the downhill sections. You probably wont hear us, especially with your ear buds in.

    Sorry guys this is not a good place to hike.
    This is a spot for motos and Mtbs
    It is dangerous to hike. You could get creamed by a fast moving rider.
    Please be considerate of locals, and DO NOT share “secret spots”. It ruins it.

    • @WildandGrowing
      @WildandGrowing  Год назад

      We warned viewers of the dangers of this hike. Our friend who is local to the island encouraged us to show this spot because of its many uses. We do not believe in gatekeeping on this channel. Our entire message is about exploring responsibly.

      @@WildandGrowing thank you for your respectful response.
      Sorry if I sounded harsh.
      I still respectfully disagree with you.
      I lived in Kauai most my life, so this particular spot is very personal to me.
      I have personally almost crashed into tourist up there while flying down a trail at high speed.
      That would of been awful for all parties.
      It is not a safe spot for hikers.
      I have been, traveled to many other beautiful places in this world as well.
      Through social media and the advent of the internet in general, I have personally seen many of these spots become overrun, trashed by a few disrespectful people, and get shut down to all of us. This is very prevalent in Kauai. Not cool.
      I’m not posing as a gatekeeper.
      I personally feel the way to find these places is to explore, be kind and respectful to locals wherever you are in the world, make conversation, bring something to offer the table, could be as simple as kindness and genuine curiosity, ask questions, find out where these epic spots are through those personal interactions.
      I feel it self moderates and weeds out bad apples that are overrunning trashing these places I find special as I assume you do as well. . .
      I know making and posting videos is a lot of work.
      You can post beautiful areas with out the details. Inspire people to get out on there own and find similar places though there own exploring.
      I am in full support of that.
      I feel we need to get back to in person interactions. Talk with each other with respect. Grow and learn from that.
      I hope you continue to have fun out there, I only ask to keep these spots mysterious for others to find on their own.
      I hope your day is good. Aloha Bryan.
