  • Partial restoration of one of three songs from this Dutch television programme from summer 1982. Billy and Martha are in Dutch police uniforms, apparently.

'SULK' is still brilliant even in this era, Billy's voice was truly unique, sadly missed.

what a band...possibly the the greatest band of the 80's....songs of such profound genius....a band of unique ability......a true product of the late 70's post-punk/Futurist period, but they were so arty....I mean they ooozed class, Alan and Billy were made up to break up...I mean how could such genius survive. I purchased Sulk in the late late 80's....I think 86....so 'missed the boat', but I remembered them fondly before of an enigmatic band....I love the album...every song is amazing!

+dj dude I met Billy at a party in Hampstead in 1984. He was a real gentleman. He was also a fantastic vocalist. Only Jeff Buckley and Amy have matched his astonishing powers, sadly all three have departed before their time.
My favourite track from the epic "Sulk".

Utterly euphoric. Just keeps improving with age. Like the Cocteau Twins at their best, this just take you to a much better place. Must have been something in the Scottish water! Two questions though; why wasn't this a single and where's Mr Rankine? He appears to have skipped off!

    • @dougie1968

I believe Rankine left the band just before the Sulk tour which is a shame as Sulk turned out to be the band's most commercially successful album. Martha Ladly, the hottie on keyboards, contributed backing vocals and keyboards to the album. My fave period of the band's existence was when Martha was a member which was from 1982-1986.

@kiwijohn01 You do of course realise that he's only miming and the notes he appears to be playing, actually bear no relation to the actual notes on this sublime piece of "pop" perfection. Btw, where's the one and only Mr Rankine got to?

I really reckon Skipping was the zenith of the Rankine/MacKenzie collaboration. And Billy without Alan was not the same, he had good moments but he could never equal this.

@kiwijohn01 Apparently Billy wanted to replace Michael Dempsey as bassist, for the intended but very unfortunately, never realised, true Associates follow up to Sulk because Dempsey couldn't play slap bass! I never stop thinking what that album might have sounded like. It would have been nigh on impossible for it to have even come close to equalling Sulk but I have no doubt it would have bettered Perhaps. The more time passes, the more unique The Associates sound. And yes Rankine was a genius!

Well it's true, Billy was a genius, but: If you sit down for a couple of hours and try and work this tune out on a keyboard, you'll soon see that Alan Rankine was a genius too.

When this album came out it was a total flop...I read about it in a book...thought the cover art was great ...so bought it. It was like nothing I had ever heard. Loved it...Still do. The Associates - Sulk

I know this performance is a backing track but why the hell is Alan Rankine not on stage playing the guitar? The keyboardist and the drummer weren't even in the band.
