I really wish there was a high quality studio recording of him singing this song

Hard to tell for sure without hearing each track separately, but I suspect the reason the mix doesn't sound good is because IU is singing in a different key from Jonghyun. My guess is that IU has chosen a sunnier key to add brightness to the melody; I'm thinking Jonghyun chose a key - probably a minor - to communicate unhappiness. Be interested to hear what others think.
