    I enjoy this film for what it is. I enjoyed the way Murphy's character Jarrell reacts to the mystical things he is seeing. I also loved the way Charles Dance's character Sardo Numspa is played so deadly serious only to be poked fun at, mocked and totally disrespected by Jarrell. Sardo views Jarrell as an annoying insect that he could swat at a whim. And dispite the knowledge that Sardo is a demon Jarrell treats him like just another dirty child kidnapper unworthy of respect. The scene in the airport made the film for me. Jarrell stands up to Sardo and openly mocks the powerful demon to his face. The contrast between these two characters is what makes this film fun and enjoyable in my opinion.

    I do believe that The Golden Child is very underrated. Sure there are some legit criticism from a technical standpoint but the film features Eddie Murphy in his prime, who pretty much carries the entire movie on his back & shines throughout with many memorable scenes featuring his signature comedic adlibbing . Apart from Eddie Murphy being amazing in it, I really liked the blended tone of gritty urban 80s thriller & Asian dark fantasy which I think comes through particularly well thanks to the fitting soundtrack that helps to capture the tone. All of that wrapped up around a pretty good comedy thanks to Murphy's stand out performance. It was my personal favorite Eddie Murphy movie growing up and it still is to this day. Edit: I forgot to mention that I also thought Charles Dance was great as the movie's villain as well. I don't think he was underutilized at all & thought he was quite the imposing and memorable villain. For many years 'Sardo Numspa' was the role I most identified him with until there was Tywin Lannister.

    Sorry but we agree to disagree. I don't think the film is forgettable at all and it's my personal favorite Eddie Murphy film. A very underrated movie with tons of classic, memorable bits of dialogue. Better than anything Murphy has done in the past 20 years. But to each their own.

      Thats totally cool you love the movie. The movie just didn't gel well with me. I personally think Murphy starred in some better flicks like Beverly Hills Cop 2 and Coming to America. He did make a lot of crap in the 90s but did redeem himself with The Nutty Professor.

    I know I'm in the minority, but I always loved this film (just as much as Big Trouble in Little China). Eddie Murphy in his prime was always a pleasure and Charles Dance is a wonderful villain "Yust like that." I didn't realize until recently that Frank Welker was the voice of the Devil, but I should've guessed as it sounds like a marriage of Dr Claw and a very deep voiced Gremlin.

    Honestly, Golden Child is a personal favorite of mine. It was the first Eddie Murphy film I saw, being released when I was 4, and if it weren't for that film, I most likely wouldn't be a fan of his. I agree with ramboraph4life, tons of classic lines and better than anything Murphy's done in years. I do see how some wouldn't like it, though.

    If I believed all reviews I wouldn't have gone to see this masterpiece (okay so maybe it's not a masterpiece), but it's a very entertaining!! I love fantasy movies, and that certainly is The Golden Child!! If you liked The Goonies, any other fantasy film, then you will love this film! I don't really buy thus reviewers whole review, but some of what he says is true. But like I said earlier, this is a very entertaining film, if you haven't seen it, I would reccomend it. Yes there are some corny things, but entertaing, don't blindly believe this review or any other.

    Grest retrospective/review. I enjoyed this movie when i first saw it as a kid and still do this day, i dont agree that its forgettable but i agree its fun enough to entertain you for a couple of hours and had its moments that make it shine better than some other films at the time so its not toally bad. I do think though that its probably not one of Murphys best films when you compare it to some others, he did some good stuff in the 90s i think that redeemed his career, nutty proffessor and Life, which i really enjoyed, but my personal favourite Eddie murphy movies are coming to america and trading places, personally i dont think he's done better then those in terms of a full on comedy movie, those were and still are some of the funniest films hes been in for me and i watch those eddie murphy films more than most of his others.
    He seemed to loose his edge to me when he started going into the family friendly or generic movies like daddy day care, dr doolittle etc, but after recently watching Dolemite on netflix, it definitely gave me a really good '80s eddie murphy' vibe, which is a great thing really.

Charlotte was always one of those actresses who I don't entirely understand why she didn't get more opportunities in major, high profile studio films. I'm always shocked and surprised to learn that she was only about 18-19 years old when she filmed that movie.

    Stuff can both have a serious story with serious and dark moments and include funny and lighthearted comedy stuff at the same time.
    It annoys me when people makes it sound like something must be either about comedy all the time or serious all the time.
    You can mix serious and dark stuff with lighthearted moments and comedy.
    They do it on Japanese movies, shows, comics and video games all the time for example.

    • @OliverHarper
      @OliverHarper  11 лет назад +2

    Good Review Olly, but i gotta be honest I do believe this movie is underrated, I never was a big fan of it as a kid, but watching it now I realised that it was much better than i thought, Eddie Murphy was extremely funny and his character was likeable, I for one thought the movie did have some good scaling, the shots that needed scale such as the scenes in tibet were well done, and the rest of the film takes place in enclosed environments such as alleyways housing a cavern etc. so overall it worked for me, my biggest gripe actually comes from the ending which is where i felt it was Truly rushed, the fight with eddie and numspa wasn't that exciting for me

  • @KurtWagner011

    I have the GOLDEN CHILD SOUNDTRACK mentioned in this production. In the liner notes it mentioned the film was originally 2+hrs long, so the narrator was correct... the remaining story is VERY uneven because so much was taken out.
    If you can find the novel of the film, much of the deleted stuff is in there, especially explaining why characters suddenly DISSAPPEAR from the film with no explanation.

    One of the last movies, where Eddie Murphy really could act normally and very well. I've always wondered, that what happened to him after the 80's, he completely went over the top with his acting, overacting and being overly energetic on almost every movie since the early 90's (apart of some occations, like that small part in Dreamgirls). He watered down lot of his work, picked up really bad movies to do and made the films appeal more to the children. Heard something, that he was concerned about his image in front of his children or something. Maybe when he turned to dad, he didn't wanna do any ''hard'' movies or play any really slick and cool characters and thus, utterly destroyed his career.

    • @jayazathoth8530
      @jayazathoth8530 8 лет назад +12

      He was a fairly good actor in Vampire in Brooklyn, his last adult film I believe. After that bombed, it became a marketing decision to focus on family films and mainstream comedy, I think. If he'd turned to more serious roles, like Robin Williams and Jim Carrey did, he might have done better.

    I finally saw this film a few weeks ago, and while I wasn't feeling all that great when I saw it, it didn't wow me. For the record, I also watched "The Hunt For Red October" that same day, and I really liked it. Regardless, I do agree with your perceptions about the movie. It is clunky at times with a number of transitional scenes missing to give the movie a better narrative and tonal flow. The scene where they find the girl dead was an abrupt tonal shift, and the studio audience bit in the dream was way out of nowhere. It really took me out of the movie because it's so strange. Also, I felt like Murphy didn't have good chemistry with his co-stars. You look at the other co-stars he's worked with like Nick Notle in "48 HRs." or John Ashton & Judge Reinhold in the first two "Beverly Hills Cop" movies, and you can see that they all work very well together. They can bounce the comedy off one another smartly and sharply. The clashing character personalities allow for the comedy to work, but here, Murphy throws out all of these pretty good lines and humorous moments, but there's no one to pick up the slack. Charles Dance is one of the BEST things about "Last Action Hero," and he is clearly putting as much effort into this role as possible. Unfortunately, the material just isn't there to do anything with. The movie is rushed, and while I don't think it's a straight out bad film, Eddie Murphy seems to think so. When asked a few years ago what movies he regrets doing, this one was the FIRST title out of his mouth which is odd because he's reportedly immensely worse than this.

    10:58 surprised you didn't mention that he also did the voice for the Devil on Spawn (1997), which sounds exactly the same here.

    This film deserves a remake and it needs to flesh out it’s story.

      Would you get Eddie back for the remake or have one of his wannabes like Kevin Hart who is the shorter poor mans Eddie who also shouts swears and whines in a bad way 🙄☹️

    I watched this movie on my time off while serving in the army somewhere in the early 2000's. I have a memory of liking the Tibetan based fantasy theme, besides liking the lead and the villain. I remember a bad child actor as well...
    I also remember The Shadow starring Alec Baldwin had some similar fantasy themes to this movie (monks, Tibetan imagery and a mystic dagger).

    I’m having this Mandela Effect in the pit scene. I thought Eddie Murphy chugged the water, mad dashed to the dagger, and spits it back in the cup.

    When I first watched this film I was expecting Big Trouble in Little China action and adventure, but was slightly more tame than I would have like...which put me off upon my first viewing. When I saw it the second time I honestly enjoyed slightly more, but kind of wish it had been slightly darker...but I agree with you're view point about the tone. It did have potencial though...

      If you are comparing it to Big Trouble you shouldn't as BTILC is better as a whole as one person in particular doesn't steal the whole film

    I love this movie and it´s soundtrack. Iˇve watched it many times and I always have a good time. It´s one of my all time favorites. But I have never made it through the Big Troubles..., it´s quite boring to me even though there´s so much happening in the film. I´ve fallen asleep two times trying to watch it. I hope for some decent blu ray release of The Golden Child.

    I give this 2 stars....and will kick in a third star for the scene when Murphy treats the prayer wheel like a turntable and raps: "AH SAY ah-ah-ah-ah WANT the KNIFE.."

    Love this movie and YES it is underrated and clearly an 80's product. Although it has it flaws and those "swooping" effects when the girl jumps are random.

    Its not a terrible film but your right Big trouble is far superior in every way. Carpenter is just a better director.

    This movie is really different from everything Eddie Murphy ever did. It might not be as a fun as Big Trouble in Little China, it still is a very enjoyable flick.

    Great points, but please take Boomerang off your Eddie failure list. Boomerang was a great movie that did very well. Still quoted and has great re-watch value.
