funny how every new generation of 3 series still brings the same general complaint, 25+ years later...getting progressively larger and more toned down with less feedback...BMW needs to start listening!
Oh my fucking god mate did you come up with this line yourself? Literally no brain dead knucklehead ever made this inane vacuous comment before! Loving your insight and originality!
I started working at a BMW dealer on March 1991 and the E36 was released the following month. It was a great car but the early ones had a lot of niggling issues. As time went on it became a much better car. Sadly, car crime was very prevalent and these cars were targeted for their audio equipment. They're quite rare nowadays and it remains to be seen if they reach the status of the E30.
When I was a kid (1990s) my family had a bmw 3 series and a Volvo 940 turbo, one of the cars made it well into the 2000s with no problems with minimal maintenance. Guess which car? 😂🇸🇪
Well, the E36 is still one of the most popular 3-series there are, along with the E30 and E46. The sales on the E92 hasn't gotten as good yet and pretty much, only BMW's own racing teams are using it in competitive use.
Watching this whilst in the process of retoring mine as an old car. Mine's even the same age on an 'H' registraition, but a 320i SE so the more powerful 6 cylinder with more equipment. I've always heard that the 4 cylinders were very unremarkable to drive.
You are indeed the man with your 320 in SE spec. Why ‘tis indeed your right to sneer at the chap in the 318 who didn’t have the extra 200 quid to buy a model such as yours. You must command tremendous respect on your estate.
I had a J reg 320i SE, excellent car. Ive also had a 4cyl 316i which unremarkable is a good word for. The straight 6 great engine. Got a 525D now so you can imagine the respect I command on my estate.
I like Chris Goffey - and the old Top Gear before it became a children's programme. PS for those who didn't know - his son is Danny Goffey from Supergrass..
i used to like how clinical the old top gear was. wheeler dealers is a good programme, despite mike brewer's ways. I think I even prefer it to the more recent top gear shows..
@@michaelreid1792 they really are built like tanks and handle like a dream. Mine really did save me, all the emergency services were there and literally said if I was in anything else then I’d be dead but the BMW took all the damage force and it kept the driver side compartment intact so I got out but I still collapsed and had to spent the night in hospital with all kinds of tests they let me out the next day. I was doing 120 at the time. I know it was so stupid and I could have easily killed someone let alone myself. I did get into serious trouble and a driving ban for it and I’ve learnt my lesson. It could have been a lot worse for me and anyone else if I’d hit someone.
it may be dry but i like how objective-oriented the presenter is, it is actually a proper car review unlike the new top gear where they just make fun and drift all over the airfield. Fun to watch but no practical help. Also new top gear presenters do VERY opinionated reviews, such as "oh what the new BMW was faster than the (insert any British car from the same class here)? Who cares its a german made car and therefore much worse."
whatever happened to Quintin? I m in Canada and have not been able to follow what happened when he left top gear. Is he still doing TV? I always though Quintin was a great presenter, and Chis is great in this video as well. I like the new top gear, and yes it is more exciting to watch, but i also like the older top gear as well. They should do a reuinion show, get the old presenters on new top gear and talk about the history of the show a bit, have a few laughs, challenges, would be great!
I miss the time when the Supra was a beautiful poster on my wall, not a rusting money dump in my garage but times have changed, so have car reviews. All of the cars today are basically the same up to the 125mph mark. What Top Gear does today is to show which car is better and more fun when you decide to go bonkers and choke a nun with your silly everyday's suit tie.
+Mike Shipton bahahahahaha!!! Are you a comedian? Lest you forget Audi's are FWD based cars first and foremost. And all Audi's look identical to one another. Ever see an A6 from 100 feet away? Is it an A4? A6? A8? It's almost impossible to tell until your 50 feet away.
+di foo!! My response was directed at David saying Bimmers are still driven by tossers, that may of been the case in the 90's & early 00's but those drivers have moved over to Audi hence them taking the crown for having the largest owner base of anti-social drivers. Mechanically I agree considering Audi's are priced to compete with BMW & Mercedes the fact they use a FWD layout smacks of cost savings to enable them to sell the same chassis & drive-train layout under VW & Skoda marques.
+Eric George Wouldn't say the current 3-series is much different it's always been the sensible mid-range safe bet car to go with, well for those who like BMW obviously. I always liked the 4-door E30 saloon looked well pert and taught. Plus the M3 looked the biz with the body kit. I agree the current one is very pretty (alot more so than the one before it) BMWs are either a car you like the image of or don't but I generally like them for their reliability and solidity though they don't suit everybody they get most things right.
Samthebam4044 You make some very good points. I am generally not a BMW fan, but as for the M3, it is universally seen as the class leader and is an AMAZING car. WAAAY out of my price range however!!
I don't drive either I 'm partially-sighted but I know my cars well enough. To be honest I liked this and the previous gen 3-series, in fact I like it right up till about 2003 when they really started to get ugly. Of that time period the 3-series was probably the most sensible car to go with if all you wanted was something safe, reliable and reasonably good to drive (the 328 you really could have a bit of discrete nonsense with). There were other cars that were more outlandish or daring such as the VW Corado (yes that was a coupe not a saloon), the Vauxhall Omega probably faster and better equipped if maybe not quite as stylish and well put together. The Citroen CX was more quirky and distinctive, the Alfa Romeo 155 was alot more charming and ful of character and peppy to drive apparently. The tatra 613 was crazy rear-wheel drive and a mid-mounted V8, Audi's Quattro and lets not forget the Honda Accord/Rover 600 and all the other Japanese quality saloons and there's many others but the 3-series just got the combo of style, sombreness and at the same time, attitude right. Might've been a bit short on spec as BMW always is for the money but you knew what you were getting when you bought one (and to a certain extent you still do).
Samthebam4044 You most certainly do know your stuff, out of those cars you mentioned, aside from the BMW, It has to be the Alfa that ticks all the boxes for me. Utterly sublime car.
@@Alexander_l322 Just stumbled across this video again and I have to say that my opinion has changed completely. I freaking love the E36 now and I really want one

They only care about selling cars. Bmw is run by accountants nowadays. The majority of drivers want large, comfortable, no feedback, not raw cars. :(
watched this review like 20 times lol. chris goffey is the man. ive never seen a more civilized powerslide @ 5:25 lol
3:07 my dads 318 made the same sound when you closed the boot 😂
Sound of the number plate tapping the boot lid
I had a friend whose knackered BMW same age made the same noise. Like a ruler sprung on a table.
Interesting they did it new. 😊
I noticed too
5:46 "You can cover the ground very swiftly indeed, innit."
Nice to see a good old fashion car review. I used to watch the old top gear back in the day.
I used to record every episode on VHS...who would have imagined watching it on a cell phone?!!
Old cars looked old and faded even when they were new looking at this videos....
It's the video quality and horrible British weather.
I noticed that too!
Watch this in 1991 and everything looked clearly and brand new
It has a catalytic converter, awesome.
Some Volvos even had "KATALYSATOR" written on the boot these days
E36 is definitely the best BMW of all time and definitely one of the top-10 cars of any kind. Absolutely indestructible cars.
+Simon Coles
E28 would like to have a word.
so would e30
head gaskets weren't indestructible
I wouldn't say they're indestructible. E30s are better built inside especially. The E36's also LOVE to rust.
@@64bakes not as much as E46 like to rust. My e36 328i had 147k when I owned it and it had no rust

I think they are more and more sought after. Especially the 328i and M3
@@Alexander_l322 I do own 328i 96' automatic e36 in a very good condition (estoril blue) , will never sell it
Always thought how cheap the interiors looked on these at the time. Didn't feel anywhere near as good quality inside as the E30, or the later E46.
Had a 91 325i in ACSchnitzer Trim back in 1994. That thing was a blast.

Why does it still look dirty and old lol
Last person to drive it was russian...
I would like Top Gear half to be like this + do the great races and challenges they do now

Remember children, your 115bhp 318i is a powerful rear wheel drive car and must be respected!
Life is all about provoking the e36.😂
You can cover the ground very swiftly indeed, innit
The car was last on the road in 2007.
It was a nice ride.. those in the video were his better days, i still have mine 320i since 95 on the road
I wouldn't say less sporty character, I mean, he said it handles well (for the time), but not unsafe as older one
Back then EVERYTHING sounded like the news LOL
I wish I was 4 and half inches longer.
