Cage winning is a great call imo. That dude is going to do great work with the sheer concept of having a World Championship match whenever he wants. More importantly he doesn't need the World Champion do do it. This is a key detail since this seems essential to be a Money in the Bank type situation. It's not necessarily Bryan Danielson's next big story line and might never be. So Bryan can go do Bryan things for a bit and meanwhile Cage has this nice new bit of kit to incorporate into his act.
And then whenever they have a hole in the schedule to fill they can just plop Christian Cage vs Daniel Bryan into it. You don't even need much build to it because of not just the contract but because D. Bryan told his daughter he was going to retire then turned around and became World Champion instead. Give Christian a 15 segment the Dynamite before the match and he'll sell the match to you. It practically writes itself :)
Let's be honest here, Cage probably isn't winning the AEW Championship anytime soon. Though I'd love it if he did someday. But he is a credible opponent who always entertains and always delivers.
The problem with Hanger or Nigel or some of the others winning the contract is that those are a bunch of big matches that need a proper build and that you might want Bryan to lose. Or on the flip are wrestlers you don't want to lose to a semi-retiring(?) Bryan. Do you really want Ricochet to debut, get a title match, and lose immediately?
Sometimes you just need bodies to put in front of your Champion. But they can't be mid card or jobbers because who cares. Christian Cage is a perfect small filler feud for guy on Bryan's level. You know it'll be good and it doesn't really hurt Christian at all to lose. Plus he can use it to get himself even more heat all on his own until they cash it in. Wins all over place.
They can make it right by doing the opposite of what happened last year. Luchasaurs won it last time and Christian Cage stole it and used it on Adam Copeland. This time Luchasaurs could steal it from Christian Cage.
I enjoy it watch your AEW All In Watchalong. I watch last three hours and forty-five minutes.

Thanks Denise and Reg for doing the watchalong party and then the podcast right after. Mercedes stans are in denial. She doesnt know who Mercedes Mone is in AEW. She is 6-0 and she is both the NJPW Strong Womens Champion and AEW Womens Television Champion. She has to defend her NJPW Strong Womens Championship Friday in DC vs Momo Watanbe. I think her mind was in DC. Also the match placement didnt help. I would have had Mercedes and Britt after the ladder match. It was also stupid af that Jamie Hayters return after 13 months was wasted on the preshow with No Match.
