My dad & were there! was 10 yrs old- some of the best times of my life! Especially loved seeing Hall & Sharp, and Slim Helson who was gridded 4th in his old Maserati- Chevy- and the way he walked the 151 at the start. I spoke to him on the phone 35 yrs later, what a cool guy with great stories! Thanks so much for posting this, those were idyllic times.
My first trip there was 1958. Town people would talk about the fact that the street racing started in the late 40's because Elkhart was a wide open gambling town. Then Cliff Tufte got the track built. There were lots of talk about the people coming up with their cars and fancy women to race and gamble and gambol. A friend from upstate N.Y told me Watkins Glen started the same way.
Great footage ! Nice shots of Jim Hall, Hap Sharp, Augie Pabst, Harry Heuer's Meisterbrauser Scarab, and the Cunningham Maserati, as well as some contemporary Formula Juniors.
