      That's so nice of you to say! We're not new to RUclips, we just don't post many videos. They're mainly just for family and friends to watch our adventures, and we've slowly gotten a little better at making them as time goes by and we've realized people really like watching them. We really try to give the viewers a full experience and hope to provide a unique perspective on subjects that already have many videos out there. I think we finally found the right balance of narrative, scenic shots, and movement to make sure our videos flow smoothly and don't get boring or overly informative. We try to let the scenery do most of the talking. Thanks for watching!!

      Thanks, we really appreciate that! Honestly, the Himalayas are beautiful no matter what gear you use, every view just seems to get greater and greater with every turn. We use a Canon 5d MKIV...old school but has stood up against the elements and has decent image quality. Sometimes I regret carrying a heavy camera, but knowing it can take a beating and is completely reliable is incredibly valuable in a place with extreme temperatures, altitude and weather. We really wanted to bring a drone, but permits are extremely complicated and expensive so unfortunately we couldn't get any aerial shots.

      @@lylesuch4421 yes we are going the exact same route as you just over two weeks from now. Your videos are consequently extremely pertinent and we are better informed on what to expect. What dates last year did you undertake this trek and how would you describe the weather in the lower and upper reaches?

    • @lylesuch4421
      @lylesuch4421  Год назад

      That’s coming up fast, you must be excited! We trekked beginning November 6 of last year, so pretty close to when you’re going. Weather was mostly perfect and very sunny. Beginning in Lukla you could wear shorts and a t-shirt, maybe long sleeve for sun protection. Nights were cold but not too bad down low. As we got higher, it did get colder, but I could have worn shorts and a long sleeve top while hiking almost the entire time except my legs got sunburned so I had to put on long pants. Once the sun started to drop, however, it got extremely cold, and very quickly. You need to be prepared with layers in case you’re hiking later in the day and be ready for winter-like temperatures.
      The tea-houses have no heat in the rooms that you sleep, so my wife brought an extra sleeping bag and she needed it, hand and foot warmers are a nice bonus. It does get so cold at night that toilets can freeze. Also, the summits can get extremely windy so down jacket, hats, gloves etc are necessary for all summits and Cho La Pass.
      And just a warning, weather can be extremely unpredictable. Two weeks before we went there was a huge snowstorm making the trek much more difficult. All the snow was melted by the time we got there.
      Two bonus suggestions. We highly recommend staying at Gokyo Lake two nights. It’s the perfect spot for acclimatizing at around 4,500 meters and will prepare you for Cho La Pass. Also, the view from Gokyo Ri is by far the best on the trek. Having more time at Gokyo Lake gives you a higher probability of summiting. Also, we were intent on summiting Kala Pather at sunrise, but our guide strongly suggested summiting at sunset. He was 100% right. Watching the sun illuminate Everest as it went down was spectacular, and it would only be in shadow for sunrise.
      Again, good luck!!

    • @SunilMehtanim1
      @SunilMehtanim1 Год назад

      @@lylesuch4421 many thanks Lyle for taking the time and giving us enormously valuable inputs. Yes we do have a day of acclimatization at Gokyo during which we will summit Gokyo Ri. Your suggestion on summiting Kala Pathar at sunset is also noted. (the sights on your video were simply spectacular). What was the coldest night time temperature you experienced in the trek if you recall. My sleeping bag has a ‘comfort’ rating of minus 5 degrees c so wondering what other ‘reinforcements’ to carry. (Were you the videographer and is that your wife providing the briefing?) Many thanks again

    • @lylesuch4421
      @lylesuch4421  Год назад

      We love that our experience can help others with their treks, so it's no trouble giving you info. The coldest night was probably Gorak Shep, at around -5C. The teahouses supply blankets and quilts, so if you add the sleeping bag it's plenty for sleeping. My wife would bring her sleeping bag into the common area and put it near the fire, so when she went to bed she had a nice warm sleeping bag. Sleeping wasn't too bad, but if you get up in the middle of the night to use the restroom, having a pair of warm slippers and something you can quickly slip on in the middle of the night can come in handy, and whenever you can, request a room with a private restroom. It's worth the small extra price if they have one. Also, make sure you have extra camera batteries, or a charging device for your phone. All teahouse have chargers, but they don't always work so you can't 100% rely on them to charge, especially the higher up you get.
      And yes, you're correct. I shoot/edit the videos and my wife is the one on camera. We always try to capture the true feeling of these experiences, and always show everything in chronological order. We love knowing that people watch these things and get inspired to travel, or even better helps them remember when they embarked on a similar trip.

      Thanks! We did our trek from November 6-November 17. We had perfect weather, it snowed only two weeks before we were there and it rained shortly after we left. It's hard to predict, but November is definitely a good time. For camera gear, I only use an old-school Canon 5d MkIV. Heavy and bulky, but totally weather resistant and reliable. I used the kit 24-105 lens, but also brought a wide-angle and zoom. I used all three lenses quite a bit so it was worth the extra weight. No drones allowed unless you go through a complicated and expensive permit process. I keep mentioning this to people, one of the most important decisions you can make with this trek is the guide company you choose. We were so happy with Life Himalaya Trekking, and if you're considering visiting the Himalayas, I highly recommend them. Hopefully this helps, and if you have any more questions feel free to reach out.

    • @lylesuch4421
      @lylesuch4421  Год назад

      Thanks! Our final video goes into a little detail about the guides and porter. We feel that they're a crucial part of this experience. They have intimate knowledge of the mountains, villages, people, permits, rules, etiquette, altitude, weather, and anything else a foreigner might not fully understand. Because of this, you're free to enjoy the beauty and experience of the Himalayas instead of worrying about permits, negotiating hotel prices, finding water, etc. It's a small price to pay and it helps their struggling economy. We also feel like a massive part of trekking in the Himalayas is for the culture, and through the guides, porters, and the trekking company itself, you're going to learn and experience so much more than if going solo.
      However, that is us. I know a lot of people feel like they need to "do it on their own", which has its own benefits as well. All up to you and your preference. If you're looking for a trekking company, we used Life Himalaya Trekking, and they were the best company we've ever worked with. Very friendly, professional, full of guidance and we couldn't have been happier. They learned our group and made adjustments to the trek in real time as we progressed to make it an even better experience. We truly feel like we made lifelong friends with them.

      We did a ton of research on guides and trekking companies in Nepal. This thorough search brought us to Life Himalaya Trekking, Shiva is the owner. We chose them because they were great at communicating, eager to create a custom trek for us, and extremely helpful in tailoring the trek to our acclimatization needs. They were a joy to work with before even going to Nepal. Once we got there, we realized we found in our opinions one of, if not the best company we've ever worked with. Shiva the owner is great, our guide Kiran was exceptional, and even our porters Ram and Rabin were amazing. Friendly, professional, hard working and were constantly adapting our trek as we went along. We also did city tours with them, and loved their company so much that we took a road trip to Lumbini with them after the trek. You should of course do your own research, but we highly recommend Life Himalaya Trekking, good luck!

      We did the EBC/Gokyo Valley Trek in November. One tip, instead of doing the traditional Everest Basecamp Trek, going up Gokyo Valley instead gives you better views, a lot more quiet and empty trails, and it's a better route to acclimatize before reaching EBC. Going the traditional route, EBC is the high point and when you reach it, you haven't acclimatized much. Gokyo Valley gets you higher than EBC, so by the time you reach EBC, you've already been above that elevation and you feel strong. Also, the view from Gokyo Ri is one of the most amazing views we've ever seen, and nobody else up on that summit. If you have any specific questions about this trek, feel free to ask us.

      @lylesuch4421  Год назад +1

      That's great! Good luck on your trek and hopefully you have an incredible time like we did. If you're flying from LAX, I assume you're from around here. Have you hike places like White Mountain and other high-altitude summits to see how you do in high elevations? We're lucky to be in a place where you can do some training beforehand.
      We just shoot on an old Canon 5dMkIV, heavy but reliable and solid in tough weather conditions. No drones allowed unfortunately, we saw one confiscated at a check point. We don't generally give out gear lists because it's such a personal list and everyone is so different. I do have the itinerary that we developed with Lifehimalayatrekking (highly recommend using them as guides, they're absolutely worth it!!). It's long and detailed, but if you follow this itinerary, you go up Gokyo Valley instead of the main Khumbu Valley. It's much more scenic and less crowded, and allows you more opportunity to acclimatize with the Gokyo-Ri summit and Cho La Pass. This is copy/pasted directly from our final itinerary:
      Day 01: Connect fly from Kathmandu to Lukla (2,804 m/ 9,200 ft.) & trek to Phakding (2,623 m/8,605 ft.) 4-6 hrs.
      Mornings, a short scenic flight to Lukla with views of mountain range, on reaching Lukla and with short refreshment break, starting the first day walk towards Phakding village for overnight stop through farm villages, a moderate walk with few short ups overlooking beautiful scenery along the route to Phakding located by Dudh Kosi River. Overnight at a tea-house in Phakding.
      Day 02: Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m/11,286 ft.) 6-7 hrs
      After a nice morning, walk continues crossing bridges over Dudh Kosi River passing several interesting villages of Toc-Toc, Bhenkar and Monjo arriving at Sagarmatha National Park entrance gate, from here on the river bed for few hours and after the last bridge a steep uphill to Namche Bazaar, at Namche with facilities of good restaurant, pubs, cyber café, post office, and banks.Overnight at tea-house in Namche Bazaar.
      Day 03: Rest Day in Namche Bazaar
      Spend one full day in Namche Bazaar, acclimatize hike up to Hotel Everest View.
      Day 04: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Dole (4,200 m/13,776 ft.) 5-7 hrs.
      A morning walk leads above Namche towards higher ridges to join the main trail near Shanasa village. From this spot our route diverted away from the main Namche-Everest base camp trail towards quiet areas towards Gokyo Lake. The path climbs with steep climb to reach a Mong 3,973 meters with amazing views and then downhill walk to Dudh Kosi River at Phortse Thanghka for lunch. After this small settlement continues to walk to Dole as the trail climbs steeply out of the valley through a patch of rhododendron forest which gives way to juniper and conifer trees. In the spring time this place will be magic with wild flowers in full bloom. This path passes summer Yak pastures. The trek leads past Tongba and Gyele villages to reach Dole with a super view of Khumbila and Tawache 6,542 m. Overnight at a tea-house in Dole.
      Day 05 Trek from Dole to Gokyo (4,750 m/15,580 ft.)
      Morning walk from Dole leads with a climb above the valley, where rhododendron forest stops, giving way to smaller bushes of juniper as you gain altitude slowly. Finally the walk leads on a level path for an hour to Lhabarma Kharka and to Luza at 4,390m; and then skirting around a ridge downhill to Macherma village. From this small settlement our walks continues to Gokyo 3rd Lake, following a scenic path to Pangka small area and then descend slightly, following one of the glacial fed rivers which flows from Ngozumba Glacier of high world 6the highest Cho-Oyu and other adjoining peaks.Walk leads to a climb by the side of a glacier, passing first lake and the second lake, crossing the path to reach at third lake known as Dudh Pokhari or Gokyo Lake a summer settlement with fantastic views of Mt. Cho Oyo and Gyachung Kang reflect on emerald green waters of Gokyo Lake. Overnight at a tea-house in Gokyo.
      Day 06: Rest day at Gokyo-Ri for acclimatization & photo excursion hike to Gokyo-RI (5,357 m/ 17,575 ft.)
      Morning hike uphill to Gokyo Ri one of the highlights of this trip, a small peak above the lake, Gokyo Ri at 5,357m offers panorama of Mt. Cho Oyo, Gyachung Kang, Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Cholatse, Taweche and far as to Mt. Makalu. After a wonderful stop at Gokyo Ri, head downhill to Gokyo for lunch and explore Gokyo Lake the rest of the day.
      Day 07: Trek Gokyo Lake to Thangnak (4,700 m/15,400 ft.) 6-7 hrs.
      Short walk of a few hours to cross Ngozumba glacier. Overnight at a tea-house in Thangnak.
      Day 08: Trek from Thangnak to Dzongla (4,830 m/15,850 ft.) via Cho-La pass (5,387 m/17,673 ft.) 6-8 hrs.
      Starting early morning with a steady climb to reach the top at Tsho-la pass after 3-4 hours of tough climb, the top of Tsho-la offers close views of Cholatse and Nirekha peaks then descends to a small hidden valley at Dzong-la for overnight stop. Beautiful views along the trek. However, you have missed out Sagarmatha National Park Museum with Sherpa Tensing Norgay Memorial Statue.

      We did visit the museum and the statue. What a beautiful location, and to have Mt. Everest in the background of the statue is so perfect! We sometimes just put the camera down and enjoy some of these locations without shooting any footage, this was one of those places.

      Yes, we're a married couple that always hike together...one of us is good with cameras, the other is good with talking to the camera. It makes for a good team while trekking. The way we hike, we take a ton of time to shoot photos/video and it forces us to slow down and really enjoy the views. We try to cover everything so when we rewatch the video it really shows the entire experience.

    How many hours each day did you walk? How far does it take from one place to another place? Did you hurt your kneecaps or legs? Thanks so much for sharing

    • @lylesuch4421
      @lylesuch4421  Год назад +1

      Every day was different. Longest day was 10 miles, shortest day was around 3 miles (summiting Gokyo-Ri). We averaged around 6 or 7 hours of hiking a day, but speed is different with everyone. We shoot a lot of footage and take much longer than most people. Nobody had problems with knees or legs, we mostly used poles and walked at a comfortable pace.
      We also went a different route than the traditional EBC Trek. Going up the Gokyo Valley was tougher, including a summit day of Gokyo Ri and going over Cho La Pass. So, because we were up at higher elevations than the traditional route, by the time we reached EBC we were more acclimatized and it was easy to go up Kala Pathar and to basecamp. Hope this helps!

      @@lylesuch4421 Thanks so much, this is very helpful 🙏 btw, is it ok to wear hiking sandals instead of hiking boots ?

    • @lylesuch4421
      @lylesuch4421  Год назад +1

      For the most part the trails are well packed and not muddy or scree filled, so hiking sandals would be fine for a large portion of the trek. But...it does get extremely cold up high, and there can be snow so it's probably a good idea to also bring a pair of warm boots for the cold.

      We did the trek in November of 2022. There was a snow storm two weeks before we went, but the snow on the trails melted and weather for us was absolutely perfect! We originally wanted to go in April to see the springtime flowers, but November is said to have more predictable weather and we were very happy with this decision.

    • @lylesuch4421
      @lylesuch4421  Год назад +1

      We stayed at the Kathmadu Suite Home Hotel in Thamel. We mostly chose it because of the rooftop views. It was a really nice hotel, with good food, incredibly friendly staff, and beautiful views from the rooms and especially from the spacious roof top. This hotel is a little more difficult to get to because it's down a narrow street, but totally worth it. And the neighborhood is great too.

      Yeah, everyone had different ways to stay warm. Luckily during the day as long as we were moving it wasn't too cold. But when it was, everyone had extra layers of jackets and pants. Night time was worse. Some people use two sleeping bags to sleep at night!
