The older I get, and as I hear these stories time and time again, I am more certain that theft should become a capital offense. It just disgusts me to no end to hear stories like this, to know the headache these POS's inflict on good people, the degradation and trust it breaks in society in general. Sorry to hear this happened to you Kip, I hope those jerks get what they deserve, Karma man...
Everyone should get a 2nd chance if they steal something. God gave you 2 hands so if you get caught stealing you get one hand chopped off. You can live a pretty decent life with 1 hand. If you get caught again you won't ever steal anything ever again. Hard to steal shit when you got no hands.
As an amateur locksmith for many years, I can feel for you. I had a storage locker broke open, and lost alot of mine. To replace everything has been slow. Locksmith tools are very expensive.
Sorry they stole your stuff Kip but is it possible the person that took your van they could've been following you and the other locksmith around? Please Kip and other locksmiths be careful. Watch your surroundings. Happy Holliday's everyone
I might add an anti-theft device to the van...I'm putting a bunch of vials with labels that say DANGER - TOXIC MOLECULES in the front and back of the van...or getting a pet rattlesnake...lol.
A kill switch for the ignition can save a lot as long as you remember to use it every night. a remote controlled relay works nice for this. Or the 12v piezo buzzer from an alarm panic tied in to a wireless relay and the dome lights makes a great loud alarm #Lockboss
Thunderbolt locks and anti-shatter window film. It's not 100% guaranteed to prevent it, but it makes things a lot harder on the burglar. If you want to go the extra length, pop out the relay for the fuel pump when you'll be leaving it for a while (take the relay for the horn since they're usually the same in case they're smarter than the average bear). It's a pain in the tail, and still not guaranteed, but it makes it a lot more work for them to get in, and a whole lot more to move it. Hopefully enough of a pain and investment of time to make them decide it's not worth it. Glad he got his van back. #Lockboss
Suck does not even come close to the range of emotions that you run through when you've been violated like that. I've been hit many times, personally and professionally, and it doesn't get easier to handle because it's happened before. It gets much harder and the pent up anger that would be unleashed on the perp that I caught would be exponential. Sorry that you got hit. Sounds like you are taking some very proactive measures to if no stop, mitigate the extent of the potential damage that the scumbuckets might be able to cause. Great program PJ. This is the stuff that helps us all be better #Lockboss's.
Tough situation, maybe not a coincidence the cameras were down when they did this. Not that they hacked the cameras (lol) but that they heard about it and took advantage of the timing. I’d love to see a comprehensive video about countermeasures or preventative things locksmiths can do to improve personal and vehicle/equipment security, like some of the things discussed here (e.g., vehicle kill switches) and in the previous safety videos. Thanks for doing this PJ and Kip 🙏 #lockboss
Sorry to hear. Back in the day I had a 90 E150 lockwagon that got broken into. It was sort of the same in what they took. They took really odd stuff and left all my valuable stuff. The policy to cover the items is called an "Inland Marine" policy and you have to have every single thing itemized. No programmers back then but I had two full kits of Curtis Clippers, a Framon machine and a fancy German Borkey machine. They left all that. They took mostly hand tools.
Very Sad To Hear What Happened To This Gentleman . It's Not Good That There Are People Out There That Have No Respect For Others Property. Just More Proof That This Is An Evil World. I'm Glad He At Least Got His Van And Most Of What Was InsideBack. #lockboss
My Stepvan is old school (1 barrel carb with cable choke and it’s gotta warm up before it will drive). It also has a kill switch but it’s mostly to stop parasitic voltage drain. Sorry to hear about your van. Was thinking about getting some of those tags that will allow gps locating. Thanks for sharing! #lockboss
Man, that really sucks! We were very lucky, I have video of people going through my kids car when it was unlocked. All they got was a bit of change, but the violation is real. Hey PJ, #LockBoss Kip probably needs a new pinning matt for his Van.
Great video and very interesting. I also had my car broken into but never stolen. A suggestion to prevent your van from being completely stolen could be a fuel pump switch that cuts the power to the fuel. I would put the witch somewhere in the caged part of the van, so it is that much harder to get to. PJ, you had someone that had a dash cam. I cannot remember if that backs up to the cloud. Maybe a dash cam that backs up to the cloud. Our something like that. #LockBoss
Oh man, this is one of those things that no one is prepared to deal with, even when you have insurance and everything else. It let you with a bad taste and unsecured, thinking if this happens again! So sorry to hear this story and i hope you were able to shake it off and keep going!!. #Lockboss
locks usually do two things, keep honest people out and make dishonest people look for an easier target. this is the second or third locksmith van i've heard of having been stolen in the pnw in the last month or two. glad this had a mostly happy ending. #lockboss
Thanks, Kip, for sharing your experience. It definitely reminds all of us to be vigilant and aware of our surroundings. Situational awareness is definitely important in this profession, especially these days. Everyone, stay safe! #Lockboss
sorry to hear that a fellow #lockboss has to go through this. Ps PJ if you Draw my name on Tuesday give it to Kip, please him sharing this experience with all of us is precious knowledge for each of us
I'm sorry to hear about what happened to you and really glad to hear that they didn't shoot you either ... Makes me worry a little bit more every time I go out on a call .... #LockBoss
My van, you can't start unless you know where the dead man switch is. Remember, Fords can't start if the brake lights don't work wink wink. Also, I have a cage in my van that you can't get into the rear of the van front the front. Then I love having air tags in the van plus in the cases and machines. But the best advice is my van has wifi in it plus hidden cameras that I can access from my phone. Lastly, replace all the interior with high LED's.
That is really messed up that happen to you kip I hope everyone watching this video takes your advice seriously and I hope you can recoup your loses and that never happens again to you or anyone else you are in my prayers #lockboss
Ugh! I hate hearing that these kind of things happen to good people. One question that I have is would your local news channels been able to, or willing to, help? I live in Oklahoma City and I can say that seem to have no problem with broadcasting those surveillance from the apartment complex out to the masses. You’d be surprised how many people may recognize that getaway / lookout car. #Lockboss
Sorry to hear this happened to you, Kip. I remember as a kid when our Dad's pickup got stolen while he was at work. They had swapped the ignition and drove away. Luckily he spotted it in an impound later and was able to get it back. My wife and I live in a good neighborhood, but I still installed cameras on my house so these days my truck is either in view or in the garage #Lockboss
My daughter had her jeep ripped off a couple of weeks ago in Texas. It has defiantly had me re-think insurance and security. Sorry this happened to a #lockboss
Kip sorry to hear about what happened to you. Thank you for sharing with us and giving all of us something to think about. Having the traffic cameras hacked sounds like they are high tech and been at it for awhile . I wish you the best. Thanks PJ for letting Kip share his story with us and getting the information out. #Lockboss
This makes my blood boil hearing this story. Locksmith vans are nothing to be messed with. Send a bunch of pics of your things stolen and I’m sure we can all work together to find the items and the people responsible. We have the same van and I’m installing kill switches everywhere. Sorry that happened #lockboss
This really sucks, I have a van stolen about 5 months ago, I had it recovered 30 minutes after I noticed it was gone. I will never have a vehicle without a wired and hidden GPS in the vehicle. #lockboss
Super unfortunate, had a similar situation happen to a lock shop I use to work for, a Van got stolen and we did research and saw a bunch of stuff go up for sale 4 months later the next city over. Ended up getting half the stuff back #lockboss
Kip, sorry this happened to you. Thank you for sharing, having these conversation helps us all think about our own situations and what we might need to do to improve them. I know I’m going to have a conversation with my insurance agent tomorrow. #Lockboss
That sucks, sorry that happened to you. Bluetooth trackers are great- I'll have to check out the Tile Pros that you mentioned. It might also be worth looking in to getting some window film / tint applied to your windows too- even if you don't want to go darker, I think the clear films can offer some deterrence / resistance to smash and grabs. There are some films out there specifically meant for exactly that. Here's one example demo video ruclips.net/video/mlsYmgKgtl8/видео.html #lockboss
Sorry man that really stinks. Cant imagine, that would be a huge setback. Those people will get whats coming to them, their number will be up. Hope they slip up and somebody catches them in the act next time. #Lockboss
New #lockboss here, unfortunately our society is headed in a direction when this will be an everyday experience. It’s only getting worse. Not your fault at all Kip. I heard years ago a trick that a smart kill switch connected to a solenoid on your fuel line or a relay to kill your fuel pump will let the thief commit to grand larceny first. Then the vehicle will fail within a small radius of where it started. This unit could also be helpful in a car-jacking at a stop light. You jump out and give the vehicle up, let the car-jacker drive away a few blocks and then the car runs out of gas. Multiple car-cams and body-cams are going to be required for anybody with enough money to get them. Glad you had insurance that covered a big chunk of it. The delayed fuel failure could come in handy on a lonely stretch of road with a new girlfriend 😉. GPS tags are also coming down in price. It’s a good thing the thief didn’t think to just cut the power cords on you equipment!!
They took 18k and maybe got $200 for it….I know what a mess it is. I had my tools stolen twice when I worked on construction equipment years ago. You’ll still be finding things missing a year from now….#LockBoss
so also he left keys to his house and his other vehicle in there? I appreciate the honesty but was that really a smart move? Would you tell your customers to do that? You don't need a spare key in the van, your a locksmith. You can originate and program a new key in 20 minutes.
Locksmiths can't drive pre-immobililzer vans, that's just asking for trouble. There are kill switches, alarms, steering wheel and gas pedal locks, slick lock type hockey puck locks, bulk heads with no door or a locking door separating the cargo and passenger areas, GPS trackers..... crime is everywhere! Why are locksmiths acting like crime doesn't affect them? This locksmith van theft thing has been going on for 15 years at least. Its like the mechanic that drives a beat up car. How can you ignore the security of your livelihood? I feel terrible for the guy but seriously what was he thinking?
Do I do I just put my number the required no bling bling advertisement on it a plain Jane vehicle nobody mess with it yet a little dirty and the outside looks like other every other vehicle on the street

Someone who steals the tools a person uses for his livelihood should be convicted of attempted murder. This has to be the lowest form of theft.
Whoever did this is NOT a #lockboss
Can confirm, we've replaced lots of stolen cars keys in airway heights over the years
I might add an anti-theft device to the van...I'm putting a bunch of vials with labels that say DANGER - TOXIC MOLECULES in the front and back of the van...or getting a pet rattlesnake...lol.

You needed a kill switch and tracker, guess it will be an addon after.
Hope you have a better day

Man that sucks! Hope they find the guy. Good idea about the trackers and disabling the electric locks. Go #Lockboss !
My Stepvan is old school (1 barrel carb with cable choke and it’s gotta warm up before it will drive). It also has a kill switch but it’s mostly to stop parasitic voltage drain. I only keep my lockout tools in my truck mostly due to space restrictions but stories like this make me glad I don't keep more in my truck #Lockboss

Nothing's worse than a thief stealing a man's means of making a living. So sorry to hear this! #lockboss
I’ve thought about it. I guess it’s time to do something about it. Thanks for sharing.
Also.. vehicle tracking devices hidden somewhere on your vehicle would be a good thing.. especially for a work vehicle 😊

Nothing like a good ol steering column lock and some anti shatter glass
In the UK, they reinforce the top interior because thieves will cut through the top exterior of the van and peel it back like a can of sardines.
Great video for awareness. Maybe you could do a video on how to secure a van outside of the normal way we usually do. #LockBoss
Really sorry to hear this. Hope they catch them. #Lockboss
Thanks, Kip, for sharing your experience. It definitely reminds all of us to be vigilant and aware of our surroundings. Situational awareness is definitely important in this profession, especially these days. Everyone, stay safe! #Lockboss

Totally bad day there. Here's to hoping they get caught. #Lockboss
Hopefully this helps someone else! I heard some good ideas in there like cutting power to the rear locks where the cage is.
I highly recommend the Samsung SmartTag Plus.
Sorry to hear about your van.
It’s a crazy world we live in

Sad to hear what happened to our fellow locksmith but definitely appreciate the great advice. Wishing you smoother roads ahead. #Lockboss
Ruthless. Hope they catch em' #lockboss
That's got to be rough.#Lockboss.
Yeah! I will be putting a security cam system in my Locksmith truck, and putting in a kill switch. #Lockboss
One of my biggest fears. In reality, all you can do is try to slow them down. If you can, garage it! #Lockboss

Thanks for sharing this terrible and unfortunate news. I don't have anything to add, but I did take away some very good advice from a #Lockboss.
Kill switch installation would be profitable business as well as helping out people to try and avoid theft of vehicles
#Lockboss
I was just telling a friend that Locksmith Van's and equipment are a target for thieves. #Locksmith.
Really hope the thieves end up getting prison time for Christmas. #lockboss
Sorry man that really stinks. Cant imagine, that would be a huge setback. Those people will get whats coming to them, their number will be up. Hope they slip up and somebody catches them in the act next time. #Lockboss
