Your comments at the end are why I love your channel. No judgements and your are fully supportive of every one. This is a great hobby and the community is exceptional. You help make it even better. There are always a few exceptions unfortunately. Keep up the great work and content.
Hey Jimmy......that wasn't a rant, just good, common sense! I've got your back 100%.
Great show Jimmy! Your "rant" was spot on! WAY too many crumudgeons at times in this hobby and they need to be put in there place. BRAVO! 😉
Suggestions for someone getting into the hobby -- 1) don't get steam, it increases difficulty of getting a smooth running layout exponentially. 2) Get a 4 axle diesel, your first layout will probably have sharp curves, and trying to horse a long 6 axle loco around it can be no fun. 3) A similar rule of thumb for rolling stock, 40 and 50 foot cars, no passenger, 89 foot autoracks etc. Make life easy on yourself.
I love the closing bit about trying to keep this a fun and safe spot.
I didn't realize that I was a model train snob till I saw a very small display layout with an older gentleman over seeing it. I was a circle of track with a loco and two or three cars in tow, dispersed around this "layout" were brightly coloured cardboard cutout flat "buildings" that looked like they came from a Dr, Seuss story. I mulled this sight over and over in my head then came to realise that many modellers are in fact artists due to their ability to reproduce real scenes in miniature. That is when I realised that this strange looking juvenile layout was this person's view of the world and who am I to judge his interpretation of the world around him. I hope I grew from this.
What a good, intelligent comment to make.
Takes a big move to recognize that maybe what you see as being the "aim" of a layout isn't necessarily what anothers is; and unless our help is in a mechanical sense ("why is this motor making smoke?") We should be cautious about emphasizing our aims or needs as being universal
@@muir8009 Thank you. Seems I did grow just a little bit more.
It looks like the rail Grinch's heart grew 3 sizes that day
Well said. This hobby gives everyone who participates in it an opportunity to be creative. People should consider what they really like about the hobby, do they like building scenery, or is it operating locomotives, or is it the electronics, or do you want to recreate a childhood memory or a favorite place you visited? Its all possible in this hobby no matter what scale you use. RUclips and the hobby magazines all provide a whole variety of inspiration to get people started or keep them going. My advice is first get inspired, find out what you like and then ask questions, take risks, don’t be intimidated it’s actually not as hard as you think, other than track-work its pretty hard to screw up. Enjoy the hobby, get inspired, try new things and have fun doing it. And if you discover a cool new way to do something share it!
Jimmy, I am a N scaler since 74" we lived in a mobile home. As Popeye says " I am what I am" About the rant so people would complain if you hung them with a new rope! Your channel is filled with useful information on all aspects of the hobby. Scale is something that we as subscribers chose but a great layout what ever the size is still a great layout. The guy missed the boat, building bench work, wiring it up, even doing scenery is all the same just the size. I subscribe to maybe 15 channels, but am a patron to 4 which you are one. That should say it all.
Jimmy, I model HO but watch all scales and quality of videos. I can learn from anyone new things that could help me with my railroad. keep up the good work!
I agree with you, just ban the offensive commentary. I love your channel because of the great information you spend your time preparing for us. I watch your channel, Tom's Trains and Things, Ron's Trains and Things, and Larry The DCC Guy. You guys are the most informative channels for those of us who are just starting out or don't have certain skills sets. Keep up the great videos!
Great information and suggestions. After over 30 years of not doing anything with MRRing. I was in a second hand store in England while in the USAF stationed there. I purchased a home built OO gauge Steam engine and some used track and built a 8ft shelf switching layout in our storage closet. This satisfied my MRR needs for 3 years until I was transferred to Germany.
While in Germany I purchased some used HO Locos & rolling stock at a attic sale. Then I moved into US Army housing in Munich and joined a small group of Model RR enthusiasts that created scenes for various MMR magazines. Since coming back to the States my interests have evolved to include membership in several Rail Road Museums and Modeling groups. Eventually migrating to N TRAK , TTRAK and most recently TTRAK-Z modules. A long way from sharing a Lionel O 12’ by 8 ‘ layout with my 2 older brothers in the 1950s in our Basement in Chicago.
Again thanks for sharing all your thoughts and information with us. Greatly appreciated ! !
Thank you for supporting EVERYONE for their involvement on the hobby. You’re doing a great job and you have a great podcast about the hobby.
I love watching your channel. Im a Aussie and I model both Australian and lately British rail. I learn lots by watching good youtube channels such as yours. I am by no means a perfect modeller and i love watching how some get everything perfectly done. But like you said, its a hobby and you should do it because you love it and you dont have to be perfect at it. Its a pass time for when your not working your job, or you have free time to model and play. I see so many rivett counters here in Australia that down people because they didnt model it exactly and then they wonder why they cant attract people to the hobby or why people end up giving it up. So thank you for being a great leader when presenting yours and other peoples layouts, its refreshing to see people having fun with whatever they are building. Keep up the great work.
Your channel here is a great antidote to all the Hobby Debbie Downers out there. Thanks for be positive and encouraging!
Agreeing with most comments, your "rant" is something I can fully subscribe to. I really like your channel and your friendly attitude to everything. There are jerks in all hobbies, model railroading not an exception. You also get them when working on the real trains - working at a heritage railway, where you get sometimes elderly men (never women, rarely young people) getting grumpy about paint not being the right colour or the wrong screws, we even had a model railroaded complaining that our trains were sorted differently than on his model of our railway and we should orient ourselves more to the prototype, which is his model.... But overall railway hobbyists are nice people and a relatively inclusive bunch, accepting everybody. Keep on the good work! - and I am drinking right now a nice espresso from Sical, a Portuguese brand (brought some coffee back from vacation).
Some people just like to complain - no one needs that, and it makes it bad for everyone. You do a great job on your channel, and, as an O-Scaler, I watch because I like trains and I like seeing what people are doing. Keep it up, and I am looking forward to drinking some more coffee while watching your videos down the road.
Agree 100% with you jimmy! Some people hate to see others happy and succedd at something. But its their own hatred that holds them back from happiness. Keep up the great work!
Jimmy, WELL SAID! I happen to be an HO scale modeler, but of the four RUclips channels I watch regularly, two feature N scale layouts (one is yours) and two feature HO scale layouts. Sadly, our society as a whole is once again becoming increasingly polarized. 150 years ago, that polarization was North versus South; 50 years ago, that polarization was pro-Vietnam War versus anti. Today, that polarization is democrat versus republican. I am saddened and ashamed that someone would try to interject their simplistic "me good you bad" world view into the hobby that has entertained me for my entire life. Thanks for standing up for inclusiveness!
Watching this video while drinking a cup of Peets!! Just want to say your an awesome modeler and you provide so much insight into this hobby, we really appreciate it! Keep up the great content!! Thanks for sharing all your knowledge....and yes I steal a lot of ideas from you!! Thanks!! Also if your a model Railroader you are part of a great community that helps each other out!! There is absolutely no room for criticizing ANYONE in this Hobby, we're all here to enjoy the greatest hobby in the world!! Thanks Again Jimmy
I model Ho and I also appreciate all scales they are all relatable, I’ve learned a lot from watching you. I have 1 other hobby woodworking and what I have discovered there are hobby snobs out there and it’s disgusting. Thanks for all the effort, teaching, and knowledge you put into your vids
Model railroading is a fun and great hobby. I have been in it since the mid 60s. I went from Lionel 027 to N scale and have been N ever since. However, I did have some HO as I belonged to an HO only club, but I never had an HO layout, never wanted one, as my home modeling efforts concentrated on N. As for my current layout, I have named it Springbrook Terminal and it interchanges with every single railroad in the country. You will see locomotives from fallen flags to modern railroads and the same goes for my rolling stock. The only people who see my layout other than my wife and I are the guys who come to work in the furnace and water heater and the other utilities. I have no interest in having others tromp through and make snide comments. I enjoy my model railroad and I run it my way. I have been DC since the beginning and will remain DC as it works for me. I enjoy your channel and your perspectives.
Well said Jimmy! It boggles my mind why some have to speak such vile words to another.
Jimmy first I would like to thank you for your informative channel. You were one of the first I started watching when I decided to get back into model trains. I used to build them with my dad when I was young. Like you I try to help people instead of trash others good effort. I love all model trains. I’m primarily n scale, but I do have some ho scale I’ve picked up at train shows. My moto…run what ya brung lol. My first layout was a learning experience and how to do things and not. I loved it anyway even it wasn’t as great as others, but I had fun with it anyway. This last 8 months I have built a new layout. This one is really coming along nicely and actually has been on another you tubers channel several times in photo shoots I did of it. This layout is better because I have more experience than I did on the first one. I now have dcc on this layout. But I digress. My point is for new people, don’t get depressed over these others super layouts, if yours doesn’t seem as good. Most of these guys have years of experience and you will get there too over time. Best advice, just have fun and ignore the negative. Thanks Jimmy for all your great positive content!
Jimmy you are so right, the so called 'rivet counters' have a tendency to drive away new modeler. I have friend the is one of the best modeler ever but never knock me down but helps me be a better modeler with praise....even when I do it wrong. That's is how it should be done. Thanks for your comments and wish you could reach everyone with them 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I have to say that I have always appreciated your "Be Kind" aspect of the channel, which seems to have always been there. It's why I personally gravitated to your videos (well, and the knowledge, thoroughness, respect, creativity, and so on). The coffee part is also great but I can't ever add anything; I'm always drinking the same thing as I'm a creature of habit. (Folger's Black Silk for the record lol)
Hey Jimmy! I don’t really have a question, rather I want to thank you for the time you put in to make well informed videos, and I really appreciate all the tips, tricks, and general information you have for us. Thanks and happy railroading!
Thanks Jimmy, really support your approach. This hobby is for anyone who would like to give it a go. Keep up the good work and the sharing of others work too.
here, here Jimmy, like you I just love trains, size don't matter, Ilove everything from real life trains to the smallest model especailly when well done. By the way I only been modelling for a couple years now & gee is there alot to learn & get my head around thats why I watch all your videos, keep them comming mate.
Thanks for your rant. No matter what the skill level of ALL the people who you feature on your channel I find that there is so often something which catches the eye and makes me think about whether to incorporate it into my protracted build. Part of your charm is that you constantly express the concept of having fun. It doesn't matter what scale or era or anything else or a mixture, the whole point should be that you enjoy yourself.
I clicked on this video due to the Title. I am totally in agreement with us being Model Railroaders. We should respect each person in the Hobby, with where they are in it. I know growth only comes with time and experience. I didn't start out the hobby knowing how to create great scenes, or that I would love landscaping the most. It was through hours of work, and hundreds of failed projects. I have been in the hobby nearly all of my life, and there are still things that scare me to try. But I approach them like all other projects, with an open mind and expecting failure at first. It is how we learn. If I see something in another scale, I appreciate it. Why should we feel like our preferred scale is the only scale? We all enjoy trains, and all scales have something to offer. We only choose our scale, for the things it offered. I work in N Scale mainly, but all other scales are great too. Love your take on it, and keep up the great work. I just subbed thanks to your rant!
Jimmy, thank you for this video. I especially appreciate what you had to say at the end. I'm a train lover, and have been for as long as I can remember (I'll be 41 in a couple of weeks). I love real life trains going across the country, all the way to the little plastic toy that comes as a little prize. Sometimes I like working on my HO layout, sometimes my N layout. I set up my vintage 1932 Lionel passenger around the Christmas tree. My 8-year-old daughter and I will get out my 25 year old Lionel O scale freight set and play with it for hours. I had a Lego train growing up. I had a wooden pull train as well when I was little. I bought my daughter a windup Marx streamline passenger from the 30s for Christmas, and she loves it.
Point is, when I'm messing with my trains, I like to have fun. Doesn't matter how realistic the train is, I want to have fun. Sometimes it's switching, sometimes it's just watching the thing go round the track. Other times the fun is working on the layout itself. My daughter likes to wind hers up and then either chase it round the track or it chase her. This summer we're trying our hand at a garden railroad in the back yard. Nothing elaborate or fancy (though the train has 4 cars... e-bay find). Probably the most I'll do is repaint the train to what I like, and we'll just enjoy it running around the yard.
How do we get younger audiences interested in the hobby? It should be fun, and care free.
I think your a great helper. And glad happy I found you
I am like you in that I enjoy all scales, my main focus is N scale, but I do have several locomotives in HO, 1 kit loco in HOn3, a lot of 2 rail O scale that I got from a friend who was going through a hard time and a Bachmann G scale set. We are looking at moving next year so I stay busy helping at the model club and working on my N scale equipment. I helps to keep me focused which is what most people in this hobby do it for I have learned
I love your channel Jimmy, bugger those who have their heads up their butts. I learned a lot over a year watching this channel concerning modeling trains, and I am only doing HO at the moment.
Never worry about your efforts. From N scale to O scale your lessons always apply. Great channel!
Well said! I subscribe to a number of model rr channels, and there are many skilled modelers out there that I learn from. The layouts you show from other people range across the board from beginner to master and that’s fine. We don’t know the age or skill level of that modeler, only that they’re putting themselves out there doing what we all love to do - model rr! Not everyone has the same skill level, or even the same budget. Do what you can, learn as you go, and have a good time doing it. I know my skill level from 10 years ago doesn’t match what I can do today, and that’s ok. That’s why it is a hobby and not a job!
Jimmy I like seeing all scales you can use any of your ideas on the scale you have. I belong to a car club and drive a chevy when I go to a show I like seeing all makes and models makes for a better time. Same with trains I like seeing them all. Keep up the great work.
Your rant speaks for at least 95% of us, unfortunately the other 5% can be loud.
Keep doing what you do on your channel and have fun modeling! -John
Very wise comments, Jimmy. I agree with you a hundred percent. We are all model railroaders. It doesn't matter the scale. And it doesn't matter the skill level. All that matters is having fun with the hobby. Any negative criticism of someone else's layout or skill level is inappropriate, and yes, anyone making such comments should be blocked. Thanks for all that you do for the model railroad community. ...Roy
I have great appreciation for how you emphasize being kind. I've seen it and even experienced myself on a number of occasions where others are not being so kind to others in this hobby. I've seen and experienced a lot of unkind behavior from both the younger and older generations in this hobby. It's gotten to the point where I've distanced myself from the railfan and modeling community just because I'm simply sick of the toxicity, but when I see people like you out there in the hobby, it just encourages me to continue doing what I love. As always, great job, I always enjoy and appreciate the positive vibes.
Recently, including today, I haven't had as much of a taste for coffee as usual, so I've been drinking SwissMiss hot chocolate these past few mornings.
Excellent video. I don't know why mean spirited people waste their time putting people down. Thank you for standing up for yourself, and all modeler railroaders of all scales everywhere. The fact that you take the time to post your work has helped me to be a better modeler. Thanks again.
Found you while trying to get educated (re-educated really as my now grown son did HO scale model railroading in his youth) about my newly acquired Z Scale trains. You may be working in different scales, but I have learned a tremendous amount from you! Looking forward to anything you care to post about Z Scale, but I'll continue watching no matter what the scale. Many thanks!
"What should I do with my first layout?" WOW, that is not an easy question to answer. Like you said Jimmy you have to do something you like. There are so many "First layout" books and plans online. It all depends on your skills, budget, space, and time.
Totally agree with your rant at the end. Scale / Era / Country / Standard don’t matter its all amazing and its all about what makes you happy. I’ve always been a country and era butterfly and so I’ve now started building 3 smaller layouts instead of one big one, UK, Canadian and European all in N, but I still love all scales. Why deny yourself the pleasure of everyone’s passion just because you want to put things in strict boxes
You keep being you and I love how you stand for the rest of us who haven’t put ourselves out there and how it’s not bad to do what you like. I agree I have my preferred style, scale, and era I like to model. If you don’t like it that’s fine. The hobby is for me and my son so if we are happy I am.
Thanks Jimmy for sharing your love model railways. I just got my kids into model railing last Christmas. I’m just letting them design their first lay out. Btw their ages are 1.5, 4 & 6
I have to figure out how to compress my pictures so I can get in on the Virtual Railroad Show. Jimmy, I know I have missed quite a few of the C&T Thursday morning videos. Life has been a bit chaotic over here to say the least. From the Fall RUclips Meet & Greet in Timonium, MD (that I and my family "hosted") to work being a pain in the backside, I always find your video's enlightening and spot on. Keep'em rolling partner!
thank you for being a great guy and trying to make a hobby fun. please keeping moving on you are the best may God bless you and your your family. THANK YOU MY FRIEND
Thanks Jimmy for standing up for all of us Model railroaders. I’m a fane of trains also. I’m building a n scale layout because of room. I have all kinds of H O but no room. As i said I love trains no matter the scale. Thanks for sharing. Have a good day.
Love your channel...always informative, educational, positive....always going to be the experts of rivet counting....great response to that person....
Piko has several reasonably priced DCC, with sounds starter sets, including one with two trains, they are European sets, but they do include a lot of track and an easy to use DCC controller with a fully lit touch screen.
Drinking President's Choice West Coast dark ground from beans. My philosophy about model railroading is that if someone is enjoying model trains and having fun, then hats off to them. We all have different preferences as to era, scale, setting, etc. That diversity is what makes this hobby so great. I find I can learn from work someone else has done no matter it is. Love the channel!
People who comment negatively on RUclips are just negative people usually. You have a great channel and it is fun to watch. Keep on setting the bar for excellence.
I too agree with your rant. There's always negative people on the internet. Best to either ignore them or block them if they get too awful. As for what scales you want to try, I continue to look forward to when you tackle Z. I'm curious as to what you'll do it. Keep up the great work!
Good remarks. We should never be critical of others' efforts. After all, last time I checked, it was a hobby. We should be having fun. It's not a competititive sport.
With regard to water, I found that it's possible to achieve some very nice results with rippled plexiglas shower door material and three different shades of rattle cans. Almost magic. Another member on a forum I belong to used gorilla glue to make a creek with good results. I'm definitely going to try that.
BTW, thanks for all you do with your channel. There's always something intereseting.
Noch offers layout kits that include a pump for real water, you can even get the whole layouts pre-made but they are expensive and they are meant for european systems with sharper curves, it's about 3-5k to get one done.
Love the whole thing, but the topic discussing ... spot on! Okay, coffee, this morning it's Dunkin's Midnight, XL with 2 creams! Just a suggestion for folks looking for scenery tips, like the water question, do go check out diorama maker's RUclips channels. I'm coming back to Model RR after a long time away, in between, lots of tabletop war games and scale model building (95% of my scale models gets set into a scene to tell a story). Building dioramas has given tons of skills that really help with static scenery.
Lastly, your channel is one of ones that made me think, "Yeah. I can jump back into this hobby", it also is very inspiring to try something different and not care what others might think, hobby should be about bring yourself a little bit of joy - and you knock it out of the park every time! Thanks Jimmy!
Jimmy I too believe this wasn't a rant but a well deserved talk. I truly enjoy just about everything you have put out and because what happened to you I have started telling others to have fun. Thank you for what you do and yes have fun, Chris
Jimmy, thank you for setting clear boundaries and sticking to them and sticking up for them! No need to apologize! There is way too much negativity in our lives these days. And it happens in the hobby. It isn't necessary and isn't helpful to anyone. Everyone does modeling according to their skills, budget, experience, time...etc. etc. I love seeing what people make and run, and learn something from everyone. If a person isn't open to it, they're missing out, and they cause unnecessary hurt for the modelers they belittle. Keep up the good work and sending out the good vibes! I hope to get started on my layout this winter and share my clumsy efforts, and damn the torpedoes of criticism, full steam ahead!
And P.S. - Drinking Community Coffee half-caff. Cheers!
I’m new to your channel and I’ve been learning all I can about N scale from you as I plan my first layout. I appreciate your lack of gate keeping and that you’re actively working against it. That means a ton to me.
Welcome to the hobby!
Totally agree with your rant. Every layout is "worthy of praise" because it's someone's work. Maybe their best isn't as good as someone else's, but that's completely beside the point. If they had fun building it, and they have fun using it, then it's nobody else's right to criticise.
I very much appreciate how informative your videos are. There are a lot of great mrr vloggers out there and I think your vids are among the best. I totally agree with you about how each layout or diorama, etc. is an effort by someone who enjoys this great hobby. Even if we don't love what other people do, or don't do much outside of the scale we model in, the beauty of this hobby is it has something for everyone! And we should all respect that and give kudos for those who share what they have done. In particular I really appreciate how much you do to support model railroading, it is very apparent from your videos that you are truly sharing you passion and that inspires me! Thank you so much.
You have an awesome channel, the only thing I don’t care for is the coffee sarcasm intended,
Your raising your family which is highest priority which you make evident is your #1 priority
You put yourself out in public and do an awesome job.
You are the conductor on your layout, if people don’t like it move on down the track.
I gain a lot of useful information on your stream. I’ll continue to watch your channel.
By chance do you do a live stream?
Have a great week
I enjoy seeing all scales my favorite is N but am going to do Z scale also. Trains in any size running is fun. Don't understand why anybody would be upset if you do more than one scale. I have learned from watching and seeing all scale railroads and that's what it is all about fun and learning.
Thank you for defending all scales and the people that enjoy them.
GOD BLESS 🚂💖🚂💖🚂💖
Well said Jimmy, on all points. I always enjoy your videos, and the comments of the viewers here. Thanks for clearing out the bad stuff, so I don't have to see it.
Looking forward to more MMR2! Take care.
Been watching the last couple years; Appreciate the underscored sentiment in this episode and in general on this channel: Inclusion and that there’s something for everyone in this hobby regardless of skill level. (“If you’re not the best, you’re the worst” pfft…) Thanks for keeping it fun!
Good point. All model trains are fun for someone, even if they aren’t your thing. And yes-some people have super skills and some people don’t, but it is a hobby for most of us, not a profession, so the hope is that most people will keep a sense of perspective, especially when it comes to making value judgments and voicing opinions about a fellow modeler’s work or what scale or era is best, or anything else…
Thank you Jimmy for your explanation of how you, and for that matter, we should be inclusive of every level of modeler. We are all master modelers just at different stages of mastery in the hobby.
Your down to earth style is quite informative so keep it up. And if a post is made that is offside and against standards of acceptable behaviour, delete and block - it's your Channel.
HO - my scale because it's all I've tried. I like the detail size for older eyesight. If given the chance would I try something else? Probably N just because of increase in trackage opportunities.
Keep up your good work. And will I get to your level of understanding some of the electronics, not likely, but that's okay with me too.
Tim Hortons this morning, double double.😀
I buy whatever I can get my claws on. Just last Saturday I got an underbed storer for 20AUD with several lengths on N flextrack (not all salvageable, it wouldn't all fit in the box), a circle of setrack which will need work, power supply, 3 points and a train. The loco and power supply work, even (but the couplers are all missing).
I have multiple scales, and counting. One day I may even actually get a baseboard together and build a layout on it...
First Press cold drip on full cream milk, which is unusual for me but the quick-mart never has any skim...
Just bought my first N scale train set. I love it!!!
Thanks for the positive outlook. Not enough of that in the world today. Love watching your videos.
You are so right! The entire idea of model railroading is having fun and relax. The only standards to meet are your own, and one persons major achievement may be something very easily achieved by another more experienced. I like that you display models of different skill levels! Society is sadly only too full of hatred and loud comments today. Be proud of standing up against it!
First layout question is like the how long is a piece of string. Way too many factors to answer, space, scale, budget, country era.
There are a few shows in the UK that often have layouts running old collectable trains or Lego trains and as folks are having a bit of fun these are often ones that are popular.
Many of my layouts are just track and no scenery as I like to run them such as the Inglenook
It's whatever you enjoy that matters.
The haters are certainly out there. I blocked one from commenting on my channel because he thinks my videos are too long.. lol. Guess I should make 90 second TikTok shorties with no real substance. lol. Some people just have hate in their hearts and they try to drown out those of us who don't. Keep on keeping on, Jimmy!
-Shane
I agree, I get many ideas from different skill set layouts, from the expert to the beginner.
Well spoken Jimmy. I have got a lot out of watching your channel and I hope you keep on publishing your informative and instructional work
Hi Jimmy. I love your attitude to the guy who had a rant at you. IF (note the capitals) you did only model in N scale (gauge as we say in the UK), so what! Rule 1 applies - it's YOUR layout and channel, so you do what you want. Keep it going!
Hi Jimmy, I just watched this video, along with all your others and heard what you had to say. All I got to say is... your cool man, a real cool dude and I enjoy all your videos.
I like your attitude, it’s about enjoying the hobby at whatever skill level and budget you have. Great job on all your videos.
great vlog pal and as a 5th layout builder I am still learning what I like and don't like I am building in HO and am looking at putting in a shelf run just to extent my run time so can not wait to see more instructional videos as for the other I too hate people who are just there to tear others down so keep up the good work cheers Alan from Oz
Hi ..Jimmy, I like your first answer to a question about starting out, I have watched some of your videos and decided on a 1x6 shelf switching layout in DC, exactly because of the cost. I started out with Kato stuff and your advice was spot on, thanks.
Well said. Enjoy the channel and all of your info. Time to get a new cup of coffee. Thanks again.
Ship models & ex-railfan reporting in (second time I've used that line in less than 24 hours), being out of the hobby of model railroading (in my opinion) has been a blessing. I don't plan on coming back, but subscriptions added in case I do, anyways I just want to give an example of how rivet-counting backfired in the ship building community, just to show both the experienced & novice railroaders what NOT to do. If you are familiar with Battleship Bismarck, you may be familiar with this particular event.
There was a time when ship modelers put yellow atop Bismarck's main 14" gun houses (gun turrets in layman's terms), and did this religiously (to draw a comparison, this would be the equivalent of road-specific details on your locomotives). It was this way since the first kits where released, however it took an interview with one of Bismarck's survivors to change that as he said "I don't remember them being yellow". With the advent of computer colorization for pictures taken in black & white, we saw details not seen before, including the placement of Anti-aircraft guns, funnel caps, range-finders, anti-torpedo equipment, and even colors. This also made yellow a viable color now as it was NOT on the ship during her only sortie. This tech also helped with her sister Tirpitz, and her liveries, aswell as other ships.
Edit: The people who put yellow on their Bismarck model's would often times attack those who put dark grey, or painted the tops the same grey as the hull, & superstructure. This is not equivalent to anything in the MRR hobby that I've experienced (outside of being made fun of for having to live by a budget that does not include Scaletrains Rivet Counter line), but I'd like to put that in there as alot of y'all put family & friends first. The Ship building community has since moved to this kind of attitude & even enforces it more religiously than this hobby, due to many of the ships's lost crew members having descendants in these groups.
Also a note to novices & experienced folk alike, make your research fun. It does not all have to be relegated to roster sheets, data charts, and books. From experience building a shipwreck model (Prinz Eugen), and a fictional conversion-hull (a conversion-hull is what the carriers Akagi, and Kaga where, those two carriers are 2/6 (if correct) responsible for the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor), Google Earth is a good way to go about finding things because there's alot that "pop-out" when not at ground level, such as shipwrecks, old building outlines, and weapon batteries. Another good example of going about things is to let the imagination go unrestricted. The military theme is an excellent example, as you got multiple industries (model manufactures, film, and more) working on the same topic, instead of a few working on everything. In fact, one such example of such research is the fact that out of ALL the warships to be built from the dawn of humanity to today, only 3 are KNOWN to have "deleted islands". Those three being Wisconsin, and New Jersey of the Iowa class, and Tirpitz of the Bismarck class.
Also I must reiterate one example talked about in this video: do what you like. I personally like modeling American & Japanese carriers, Battleships & Destroyers as a whole, and Allied, German cruisers. What appeals to me when it comes to the carriers is the Shoukaku class, and Yamato Hull No. 3 (Shinano). Absolutely beautiful carriers to look at, even in Black and White, in fact IMO, all warships are beautiful to look at, even if they're not on the winning side. Now when it comes to CV-6 (Enterprise), that ship was a beast (if you wanna talk preservation crimes, the scrapping of CV-6 is at the top of all of them), and I enjoyed each & every iteration I've built (including fictional carrier deck marking based on an anime).
Also coffee is the cheap Walmart brand Colombian. Tastes awful, but works while everything is up in price.
Hi Jimmy - I enjoy your channel and the community you have created - many thanks!
You tell 'em Jimmy. Love your total acceptance of all things M.R.
I think I pointed that out myself a couple weeks ago when somebody complained about the coffee, it's literally called coffee and trains! Take a hike! Some people's only ambition is to make others as bitter and unhappy as themselves. It's sad. I think you do a great job.
Agree 100% with what you said at the end. Yours was one of the first RR channels we found and your be kind has resonated with so many. Thank you for your informative videos and the time you take to make them!!
Maxwell House Smooth Bold here.
Thanks for being you, Jimmy, and reminding folks that all aspects of this hobby are worthy of respect, regardless of scale or the experience level behind the effort. Sure, someone may look at another's layout a find a lot that they don't like or can find fault in; but criticism (when asked for) is one thing, being rude, dismissive and condescending is something else. I'm assuming the person who left that rambling rant comment has been shown the door, and rightly so. There are enough self-righteous overly-opinionated trolls as it is these days in all aspects of life, and I see zero room for tolerating them in what, for the vast majority of us watching, is a passionate hobby. I've always tried to live up to a phrase my mother always said: "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." It's sad when we see other supposedly mature adults who apparently never get this memo during their formative years.
Hello Jimmy, If I don't drink coffee, does that mean I shouldn't watch this channel? Just kidding, all of your videos are food for thought. I will continue to watch even if I don't drink coffee. You know, Tea and trains flows of of the tongue easily. But you would probably have to be modeling British or european railroads. Have a good one.
🤣
Agree 100% that the hobby should be FUN and inclusive. It would be nice to be a super awesome modeller but the enjoyment comes from learning new skills and techniques for our layouts, and I have so much fun with the kids just running trains around our half built layout!
Good job Jimmy 👍 I always enjoy your shows
Thanks for being you Jimmy. Much love and respect ❤❤❤!
Our hobby is full of self appointed gate keepers who will vocally oppose or denigrate anyone who does things differently to them. It is tiring. Run what you love. Keep up the good work.
True in many areas of life. I try to do 2 things:
1. Just laugh and ignore people like that. Can be difficult!
2. Not BE like that. Less difficult.
Well spoken sir... Love all the shows....
Thanks for this one today. I do not have a lot of artistic ability never have. But I am going to do my best understanding that my best is not someone else's best. I want to use model railroading as a stress reliever, without a bunch of critics looking over my shoulder. Again, really enjoy your videos! Please keep them coming.
@ 10:07... right there, that says it all... "... having FUN and LEARNING..."
Loved your 'rant'. Well said! Keep on rollin'!
This is a great Hobby, well said 100% behind you. Mike HO from the land down under.
Hi Jimmy. Well said sir! I don’t have a railroad in the N/HO/O sense, but I love your channel and I love gazing at the incredible things others have achieved. For the love of trains, people, play nice and be kind. We need tolerance and mutual respect for one another to be embedded in life and the internet. Btw, Nescafe Gold Blend Cap Columbia is just fine by me - quick and simple!😁☕️
Way to go Jimmy! It's always a real treat to see your videos. It would be neat if you could do a live session sometime. I'm drinking Great Value 100% Arabica Colombian Medium Dark Ground Coffee.
I have a DCC-EX setup, it’s a Arduino Mega clone with an ESP8266 built in for WiFi rather than needing a separate WiFi shield. For a motorshield I used a deek robot motor shield. I use a buck converter to have a laptop switch mode power supply to feed 15 volt to the buck converter to down step the power to the arduino at 9v and then feed 15v to the motorshield to the rails. Mine is an HO scale layout the beauty to the switching powersupply is being able to fine tune what works best for your layout based on scale.
Also you’re doing a great job and I don’t care what anyone says. I’m an HO scale railroader and most of the RUclipsrs I follower are n scale modelers such as yourself. I never got the impression that your content was n scale exclusive or that you didn’t enjoy other scales. I don’t think you can be in the hobby without having appreciation for what can be accomplished in any scale regardless of if it’s your current or preferred scale.
