I remember when I was learning Spanish for about a year and I felt like I was confident enough to order my food at a Mexican restaurant in Spanish. The lady looked at me like an alien 👽 and didn’t know what I said so I had to say my order in English and my soul was crushed.😂

Listen, I worked at a grocery store and could speak a decent amount of Spanish. I took 4 years in school. Anytime I spoke to a Mexican person in Spanish they'd either laugh or give me that look of I have no idea what you said. And yes, my accent was pretty good. Then I'd get a Mexican person to say the EXACT same thing, the exact SAME way, and they all of a sudden totally understood. 🙄
Also worked with a whiter than snow kid who's mom was Mexican so he was fluent in Spanish. The second he'd speak to them they'd do the same thing.
I've asked my husband how to say a word in Spanish and he'll tell me idk. Then I look it up and it is literally the exact same word in Spanish just with an accent and he is like ohhhh, yeah now I know. FFS! 😂
Don't take it personal at all. You probably said everything exactly how a Mexican would but it's like they can't compute that a non-Mexican speaks Spanish. Chuy need to do a video on this! 😂😂
Just go to Mexico and you’ll get plenty of opportunity to speak Spanish. As an added bonus their food is the bomb.
I had a roommate in the early '80's from South Side Chicago. We were in San Antonio,Texas having lunch at an excellent Mexican restaurant. He insisted on ordering in his newly learned Spanish. He insulted the young lady in the ordering process. Some angry guys came out of the kitchen. After talking to Mike they understood the problem. Mike very bad about what happened. My Spanish is good. My stepmom was a Tejana. I took Spanish for 3 years in highschool but Lydia was my real teacher. I explained to this young lady my friend was trying to learn Spanish because it's Texas. The insult was not intended. After talking to him she realized his remorse was genuine.

I’m one of the only white people out here that can eat various spices and peppers without crying. Every time I try to get one of my friends to eat something as simple as a piece of a Jalapeño, they say absolutely not 😂
