On the IFI website they have publicity photos of people outdoors holding the HipDac with a headphone plugged in. I'm not sure what they are listening to as there is no source of music connected to it. If you stack this with your phone there will be a two inch loop of stiff data cable sticking out the bottom. If you disturb that cable it stops playing. This means you can't play music from it and put it in a pocket. You could carry it in one hand while being careful not to knock that cable. Technically portable but effectively only transportable. I imagined myself merrily wandering around while feeling superior about my portable audio so I was a little disappointed. If they were able to produce a cable or other connection that allowed pocket carry that would be great. The thing sounds fantastic.

These are really well suited to the grado prestige range with low impedance. They take the sharpness out of the high end adding a bit of warmth across the board, without losing clarity. The bass boost will add a little bit more full bodied clout too... Winner!

Pentaconn offers a 5th conductor which is a ground for a conductive cable shield. XLR4 has a ground lug as well, but 2.5mm TRRS doesn't. The 2.5mm doesn't really have a need for it as it is only ever used with portable devices, and electrical cable shielding is only ever desirable when cables are exposed to high levels of EMI/RFI, which isn't common in consumer headphone systems anyways.
So what Pentaconn offers, is an alternative to XLR4 with all of its benefits, at a size that offers more confident durability than 3.5/2.5mm, but still small enough to be applicable for portable devices. The market hasn't fully adopted it just yet, but if more desktop amps come out with 4.4mm Balanced outputs instead of XLR, it would be the more versatile connection for both stationary and portable setups, without any real compromises.

I wish it had bluetooth; it'd be more convenient to use on the go without my phone attached to anything. I know the xDSD does, but I have minor issues with it: 1- that thing is a fingerprint magnet. 2- I think the flat design feels better whether it's in your hand or in your pocket. 3- it uses micro USB instead of USB-C.

  • @TylersEclectic

Pentacon seems to be the new standard for portable balanced, which I really like as it is a more solid connection that I’m not worried about breaking, not that I ever broke a 2.5mm lol

Also you are quite limited to sensitive headphones with the Dragonfly red ( like over 98 db sensitivity and 150 hom at max ) nonetheless the Dragonfly is more convenient

Got my Hip Dac yesterday. The LED stays green regardless of the sample rate being played. 24/192 is supposed to be yellow and MQA magenta. I've used Foobar2000, Tidal Windows app, and Chrome (Neil Young Archives) on my PC. I've installed the proper drivers and set up the Tidal app per ifi's instructions and still the light stays green. Ifi support was quick to respond but have yet to resolve. My dragonfly black detects each sampling rate flawlessly. I really wonder how much time reviewers are spending with this product as they have out put reviews prior to the product being available in the U.S.

@@buenahora001 currently have the S1 and Beam 2S. The S1 isn't really that powerful at all compared to the Beam 2S.

Arthur Ju-Thai Lu haven’t tried the Beam 2S. I like the overall sound signature of the S1 and it powers my IEM’s quite well. Don’t really use it to drive headphones.

I only use iems as well. I find myself using high gain on the S1 compare to low/mid gain for the Beam 2S. The S1 tend to distort the sound a little on that setting for the music I listen to primarily. Also, I always shuffle play my songs, so the EQ function doesn't suit me that much.

Arthur Ju-Thai Lu appreciate the feedback. I might need to try the Beam 2S then!

Would you run the focal clear with this?

Mine died after a day of use.
I was in the market for a small portable DAC/amp, I settled on this after auditioning it against the BTR5 and xCAN. All of them sounded fine but the hip dac was much more satisfying to use due to the analog volume knob and it was also plug and play with my smartphone. The other ones are bluetooth only, the BTR5 apparently supports usb dac functionality but couldn't get it to work with my phone.
I was using a shure se535 for IEMs, in normal day to day, it was a great product. But at night time listening, there is audible hiss and can be distracting when switching music. Sadly couldn't use it at night.
I was using with a Focal Clear for headphones as that is the only headphone I had that can do 3.5mm and it was powering it well. No complaints on the sound, it sounded almost as good as my Schiit Jotunheim. But it died a few moments later so never really got around to listening and comparing properly.

Did you try charging it with the black usb c cable to a computer? I found the charging method a bit odd at first, so maybe it's related

To be fair, nobody should be looking at Hip Dac until they release a BT module. Sure sounds good, and bass boost, and looks cool and all other stuff you can review, but in actual use, the fact you need a cable that will disconnect and stop the music when you move the phone, makes you not wanting to use the device. No device worth buying if the experience makes you actually not want to use it. The usage is so bad that, I just pay the same exact money once more and got a BTR5 that I can actually use on the go.
