On the IFI website they have publicity photos of people outdoors holding the HipDac with a headphone plugged in. I'm not sure what they are listening to as there is no source of music connected to it. If you stack this with your phone there will be a two inch loop of stiff data cable sticking out the bottom. If you disturb that cable it stops playing. This means you can't play music from it and put it in a pocket. You could carry it in one hand while being careful not to knock that cable. Technically portable but effectively only transportable. I imagined myself merrily wandering around while feeling superior about my portable audio so I was a little disappointed. If they were able to produce a cable or other connection that allowed pocket carry that would be great. The thing sounds fantastic.
These are really well suited to the grado prestige range with low impedance. They take the sharpness out of the high end adding a bit of warmth across the board, without losing clarity. The bass boost will add a little bit more full bodied clout too... Winner!
Pentaconn offers a 5th conductor which is a ground for a conductive cable shield. XLR4 has a ground lug as well, but 2.5mm TRRS doesn't. The 2.5mm doesn't really have a need for it as it is only ever used with portable devices, and electrical cable shielding is only ever desirable when cables are exposed to high levels of EMI/RFI, which isn't common in consumer headphone systems anyways. So what Pentaconn offers, is an alternative to XLR4 with all of its benefits, at a size that offers more confident durability than 3.5/2.5mm, but still small enough to be applicable for portable devices. The market hasn't fully adopted it just yet, but if more desktop amps come out with 4.4mm Balanced outputs instead of XLR, it would be the more versatile connection for both stationary and portable setups, without any real compromises.
