  • In this Beach Gear Guy review video, I set up and review the Shibumi Shade. I bought this beach Shade for $250, which isn't cheap, so I really wanted spend some time with it to see if it's actually worth the price tag.

Our Neso was falling apart after one week of use. Collapsed under heavy winds. Returned it for a Shimbumi. Ideally, would keep the Neso Grand for days with no wind.

Thanks., saved me $250. First most beaches aren't that empty and if the wind shifts or sun angle, you're screwed. Plus the noise, the best part of the beach is waves crashing.

I bought the Shibumi and was bothered by the flapping and noise in high winds. There is a simple solution. I tied a short cord to each of the free corners (the ones that were flapping in the wind) and tied the other end of each cord to a water bottle filled with ocean water. I buried each water bottle a foot or so in the sand to provide an anchor point for each of the corners. This stopped the flapping. Shibumi should add a grommet hole to each of the free corners to make this easier as it makes the shade much more functional in windy conditions.

A subscriber found a knockoff Shibumi Shade on Amazon that included your grommet idea. Strangely enough, this beach shade has disappeared from the internet.

Yes it's too pricey. I used poles from my broken tent, bought two double hammocks on sale for $20, sew the fabric together and got my sun shade for under $25.

These line the beaches where we vacation at Oak Island N.C. I’ve seen people fight every kind of canopy while the people that have the Shibumi relax all day under theirs. I broke down and spent the $250 for one this year and can’t wait to use it ⛱

Thanks for posting this review. It's always (and I mean always) windy on the beach in Texas and it's also often very hot so shade is a must have. Unfortunately a typical pop-up canopy just won't hack it - bent poles, torn shades, etc. The $250 price tag is a little steep but getting the right gear can make the difference between a relaxing day at the beach and a daylong ordeal.

Received one today just in time for Memorial Day. It’s a gift for my dad after we saw a similar model at a local Texas beach. Looks like a breeze to setup and bound to catch attention! Felt okay about the higher price tag knowing it’s made of recycled plastic. 👍🏻

That's an excellent gift idea! The Shibumi Shade sure does get attention on the beach. I have the original shade which provides UPF 30+ sun protection, but I hear that the newer shade, made of recycled plastic, provides UPF 50+ sun protection. It's also supposed to be a little bit quieter, too. I hope you and your family have a fun & safe Memorial Day weekend!

Sooooo expensive and while I appreciate that it was designed by a couple of Navy Seals, those of us who can't afford that price point, but can sew, can make a similar item. I bought a tent this weekend that was similar to the Ninja one you showed, for $40 and it worked for what it was intended for and way more affordable. Super easy to set up too!

Good review. Just bought one and looking forward to trying it this weekend. Super popular on TX beaches. For anyone who thinks this is expensive (and I'm with you on that) consider 1) The value of your time fighting a traditional shade canopy, 2) The frustration of having a traditional canopy fail mid-trip (been there), and/or 3) Having the wind launch a metal-framed canopy into a person or vehicle (seen both). To say nothing of the weight and bulk of lugging other options to and from the beach. Point being: you're going to spend about $100 on some kind of shade whatever--if that's your sunk cost--then another $150 doesn't seem all that unreasonable.

Most people like to sit facing the ocean. I think the shibumi has the right idea with the lightweight and quick set up. But the noise the having to move it with the wind and price is bothersome. The ninja or something similar I think is more beach friendly for what people like to do. If you don't care about facing the ocean and/or shifting it every time the wind shifts than the shibumi is for you. I'll keep my ninja and/or umbrellas. Thanks for the review it was informative.

This looks like a giant pain in the ass, and very loud. You rely on the breeze, have to rotate it to the wind, move your things when you do, costs $250, I'm so glad you did this review! I went with a sunshade with poles and sand bag anchors! :)

    • @ericafors6039

I disagree. It is very easy to set up and only relies on a sand stake or guy line in the front. Also, and this is a big deal for so much shade, it weighs under 4 lbs. At our beach the winds ‘almost’ never too weak to use this shade. It can accommodate large parties, you can freely move under it and walk through it. The big drawback for me is the price, but it is a stateside and very well made item. They are hugely popular at our SC beach for all the reasons mentioned above.

I've used both umbrellas with anchors & sand bags and the Shibumi, which I bought 2 years ago, and I will always go to the Shibumi. Our beaches in the Carolinas rarely have a lack of breeze and I have never had to re-adjust/re-position the Shibumi yet. On the contrary, we've had this up on very windy days and had no concerns about it getting away from us. Also, I can easily set this up, 1 person, in just a few minutes.

I've been watching your reviews and it led me to buy a Neso Gigante, to go with our already owned Shibumi. We use ours in the Outer and Bogue Banks, NC and they both really have their uses. The shibumi was actually created in the Bogue Banks area too. The shibumi is a wind only kind of thing like you said and it is so easy and quick to setup. Last time we used it we had 11-20mph winds, and the shibumi worked great! However, it is sooo loud, it will even drown out music and you basically have to yell at your family when talking. But if you have no wind, forget about the Shibumi. Maybe one day they can offer a solution, like anchor attachments on the sails. When you are on the beach in NC, you will see Shibumis every where. The Neso Gigante is really awesome to go with the Shibumi. It is huge, and offers a ton of shade. It take a bit longer to setup and you have to learn through trial and error to get it right. The issue with the neso gigante is the high winds. On the days where wind is 15+mph of if the wind changes direction frequently, which it likes to do in NC, go with the Shimbumi. If you set up the Neso perfectly you hardly ever have to adjust or fix poles even if you are on the beach a full day. Being a tall person, the 8ft poles are awesome. Definitely buy more poles for the neso though, they are pretty thin and cheaply made.
TL;DR your reviews are awesome. Thank you! If you go to the beaches in NC and want the best for any situation get a Shibumi ($250) and a Neso Gigante ($150)

    • @julieh7478
      @julieh7478 2 года назад +1

Actually, I almost got the Neso. Some reviewers say it only comes with 2 poles and you'll need to buy the extra poles in case one breaks or sometimes you may want all four poles up. Anyway, Neso plus extra poles with tax puts you at $203. Shibumi at $250 plus tax is $270. I ended up going with the Shibumi since it seems more durable and there is usually no lack of wind at our local beach. From what I've read it can withstand higher wind than canopies which makes sense with its design. In term of loudness from flapping in the wind, I'll just have to see how annoying that might be.

    • @SuperPhunStuff
      @SuperPhunStuff 2 года назад +1

@@julieh7478 cool stuff. yeah I have been using both the shibumi and the neso for almost a year now. we use both pretty frequently. If you have the wind, shibumi is a great way to go; so much quicker and easier to put up than the neso. If there is heavy wind, the neso is kind of a pain to set up by yourself and you have to really overpack the sand bag corners. However, once up, most of the family preferred the neso because it was quieter, especially if they didn't have to go through the hassle of setting it up (leaving it up to me and stealing my spot!). You get kinda used to the noise levels of the shibumi, but when you switch between that and something like the neso, then you realize how loud it can be. But for simple and quick setup it easily goes to the shibumi. Really they both have their uses depending on the conditions on the beach.
      TL;DR from my experience
      shibumi
      - easy and quick setup
      - easy to pack and store
      - loud
      - can't use if there is no wind
      - the amount of shade depends on how well it is blowing the fabric
      - seems a tad expensive for what it is
      neso
      - larger area of shade
      - quieter
      - takes longer to setup
      - heavy winds make it a little difficult
      - extra poles are a must if you want to use it to its full ability

The light weight and ease attracts me - it seems easy to pack on an airplane and than tote to the beach if riding bikes. Just saw one of these and it was really cool. But I immediately started thinking of how to diy it. You can buy the flex tent pole and enough ripstop nylon for about 80-90 bucks. The rest is “just” sewing skills and time. So I definitely agree it fees a bit overpriced.

Thank you for the video! Great information and demonstration. I was debating between the Shibumi and a similar product called Beach Shade. I went with Beach Shade (also a tad lower cost) because with windless days, they include 2 windless poles to attach to the back to hold up the cloth and block some sun. I am heading to the beach in July in Florida, and am both excited/anxious to try out this new type of shade alternative.

Great video. Thanks. I was wondering why Shibumi doesn't simply make a second seamed opening on the other long side and provide another flexible pole? Sure, you lose the flapping and the "dramatic" look, but then you wouldn't always have to have good wind.

I can only assume that it's because if you did that...now your anchoring system would need to be much stronger since a strong wind would just blow it out of the sand and away down the beach. The flapping side prevents it from blowing away because it's only using the wind but not capturing it. 🤔

I got a sun ninja, because we were also going camping, and the campground had a beach on the lake. I figured there wouldn’t be enough wind on the lake for the shibumi. We set up the sun ninja once, and then figured it wasn’t worth setting up the second day we were on the beach. Just the extra space needed, and my kids didn’t like that we needed to fill up the 4 corners with so much sand. 🤷🏻‍♀️ But this week we went to Ocean City, MD and we realized that space in the beach was super limited. Again, the sun ninja seemed too inconvenient. So we set up the shibumi. It was really loud the first day, because the wind was stronger. My sister complained about the sound. My kids liked setting it up. It didn’t require nearly has much sand or space. So we did use it the second day we were at the ocean, and the sun ind wasn’t as strong. My sister was skeptical that it would fly because she didn’t think there was enough wind. But it was perfect! My kids really preferred setting up the shibumi. So the shibumi was a winner for the ocean. I don’t know what to do about the sun ninja. I might keep it around for lake beaches, but it was just kind of cumbersome to set up.

For a crew of your size, I would normally suggest a canopy beach shade like the Neso or the Sun Ninja, but they do take up a lot of real estate on the beach. I just reviewed the CoolCabana which costs more than the Neso and Ninja ($200) but it's really a good sun shade. It can provide shade for 3 people but it may get a little cramped with more than three. Have you ever heard of the Sport-Brella? I reviewed the Sport-Brella XL last year: ruclips.net/video/hsOEqs9BvaQ/видео.html . A beach friend also has one and in the past we've placed the two of them side by side to accommodate four people. It actually worked out well without taking up a huge amount of space on the beach. The Sport-Brella XL is still on Amazon but it's way too expensive now ($110). They now have the Sport-Brella Premiere XL which is currently going for $60.99. I've actually been using it at the beach this summer. The overall the quality is okay and it provides the same amount of shade as the XL. Just an idea. I'll keep thinking.

As an experiment I had a channel sewn on the rear side of our Shibumi (like the one on the front side), and purchased the same pole type (11mm, 7001 aircraft grade aluminum tent poles connected by shock cord) to mirror how the front was made in hopes we could control the loud wind flap.
We tried it out on the beach with 11-12 mph winds. The problem with this experiment was that the 1.1 ounce ripstop polyester material the Shibumi uses is similar to parachute material and is designed to catch the wind and use it suspend the canopy, which works well if its allowed to flow free, not so much if its not.
The issue with the aerodynamics of this feature became clear once a rear constraint was added to the mix (the new rear arching pole we applied). It created a massive upward aerial lift effect in the center of the canopy that would've pulled both poles out of the sand had two of us not be there to hold it in place.
Even after adding additional guy lines connected to heavier sand anchors on both ends the structure remained unstable. In the end the ripstop material worked great in providing the lift needed to suspend the shade but only if it was free on one end so it could flow with the windl unopposed. Otherwise, securing the back end unfortunately turned it into a parachute. I wound up removing the rear pole altogether which worked fine but the loud flapping noise returned. Oh well.
