- During 2016, Aviation Spotters Online was privileged to have had the opportunity to be a guest with the crew of a former Royal Australian Navy, Fleet Air Arm, Grumman S-2G Tracker, that once operated off the deck of the RAN’s flagship, the aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne, in the anti-submarine role.
Watch the pre flight checks and a fast taxi down the runway with in cockpit footage, at HMAS Albatross, situated in Nowra, New South Wales.
Fantastic , Truly Awesome stuff , A legend.
USN, 68-74, Electronics tech PO-2, I maintained GCA RADAR and TACAN, ended up at NAS Miramar 70-74. LOTS of S2 series came in for touch and go, etc. COOL little aircraft, I LOVED the sound of the Big Round Engines
Oh the memories. The fact I can remember so much of the start procedure.
Thanks for the ride along. Fabulous airplane
We loved the S2F when en in the U.S, December%

I hated that there was only one gauge for the air pressure, Had to check pressure on port start up. When finished, had to shut down port first and check you had pressure on stbd. Gauge was for system pressure only, not individual engine
Does Australia still use these?
No
Holy Shit.... How OLD are your pilots???? He's active duty???? Or it this just some kind of re-enactment volunteer organization???? Like the Guys that fly the B-29 Fifi in Texas???
Likely some reservist who used to work in Fleet Air Arm, now helps around at the museum.
The S-2 Trackers havent been in service for 40 years now.
I personally know this pilot. He is a Former RAN Tracker pilot who flew with my dad. he is similar age to my dad who is 73. Volunteers at HARS and also still flys commercially to this day.
