Thanks for sharing your thoughts! A lot of what you said lined up with my own views/method for bullet journaling. I definitely couldn't do the minimalist version that Ryder Carroll does. Half the benefit having having a bullet journal (for me anyway) is getting to sit down and set up the next month with all the different spreads and decoration. Investing some time, energy, and creativity into it is kind of the point. That being said, the migration method was the main game-changer for me when I started bullet journaling. It's how I knew I finally found a planning system that would work for my brain, so I'm grateful to Ryder Carroll for that :)
I love that you made this because I ran from bullet journaling after getting so overwhelmed with the decorations but seeing how many people do it differently is so cool. Reminds me what interested me in the first place (the customization)
I really liked this video! I just think that the statement that Ryder’s method leaves no room for creativity is not 100% accurate 🤓 In his book he even included some art work that has helped some of his readers. While he does not focus on creativity as we artists do, he definitely acknowledges that it can be part of the method for those who need it 😉 and the bullet journal official Instagram sometimes features artwork from creative bullet journalers ❤🎨📖
What I like about Ryder’s method is that is simple, I don’t get anxious or stress thinking about decorations and draws, I love to watch videos of people drawing but personally I don’t do it, and the thing that I most love is that If I don’t use the bullet journal one day or more there is not going to be blank pages, I get what you say about the method is the same than buying a planner because some how it is but at least for me I don’t have to worry about the pages I don’t use, many times I stopped using them because I didn’t use some pages and I was like, why I’m buying if have is empty because I didn’t need or forgot to use it. Regards from 🇲🇽 love you videos
Well, one of the chapters in ‘the bullet journal method’ starts with the quote “Have nothing in your homes that you do not know to be useful, or *believe to be beautiful*.” So I think your style lines up! Even if it doesn’t ‘look’ traditional; especially with “believe to be beautiful.” ❤ I got burnt out on the craft-y side of planning during HS, coming from the ‘full-page-stickering of a structured planner’ side of planner youtube (the favorite for a while was the erin condren pwms) and now barely do a lindseyscribbles-style light deco in my own bujo normally. I love going all out for holidays, though-some of my favorite times in my notebook have been in October or December. I circle back to videos like yours or jashiicorrin’s for inspo.
I am definitely more on the Ryder Carroll side of the spectrum and that's why I use Hobonichi and Happy Planner. I do love to get ideas for my planners from bullet journalers though because everyone is so creative. I like to use various trackers and spreads in my own little functional way. I find the art so cool, but it gets in the way of me being able to process the information. They also take a long time. I'm considering doing long term tracking and memory keeping spreads in an artistic bullet journal. I just haven't taken the plunge yet. I loved this video and love hearing your ideas. Thanks for sharing!
i definitely see your point, but at the same i think the original system is very simple because ryder carroll has adhd and he came up with this method to help his own adhd or at least bullet journaling actually works for me bc it's the simplest thing to make and clearest thing to look at and has layouts that actually serve my messy and disorganized mind since i have adhd too, while pre-made planners never really worked for me bc they were actually /pre-made/ but making my own planner and being able to change whenever i want based on what i need that actual moment or whenever the layouts become boring and i need something new is a blessing and my life has been kinda organized since i've been using it i've been bullet journaling for at least 5 years and right now i don't use an index either but write my goals in it too, i write in it whatever my mind comes up with that's actually important and a lot of brain dumps, i only use very simple (and ugly) monthly, weekly, daily layouts, so therefore too many things and artistic stuff would only confuse me and would take too much time while the trackers are completely useless for me bc i forget about them so i have to write my habits as tasks every day or i would forget to do them, but since i also really like the whole creative thing i have another journal which is a mix of scrapbooking, diary and journalling with the creative and artistic idea of the usual bullet journal so i actually get the best of both worlds ! :)
I love your thoughts about the bullet journal method! I guess I'm something in between, I use the simple monthly overview and the bullet system (but x means that I haven't done the task). I don't use daily pages but my weeklies as vertical boxes. But I also love to decorate a lot (mostly scrapbooking style).
You just took very old material, did no research and put your words together. It's bullet journal system, means you can edit it for your own needs. Ryder is glad for creative part of the community, too, he just do things as he feel it's better for him and also is better to understand for a beginner - from that point you can do whatever you want. Also, it's not only productivity and organisation. Yes, back then was, Ryder himself said so, but he and the community constantly make progress, use mindfullness, self-knowing, in the BuJo U there are different experiments going on. It's evolving, trying to look for "why" behind your goals and tasks. I just think, you did really bad with such an old video and nothing else.
while i appreciate your opinion, if you heard in the video i talked about how the bullet journal community has 100% evolved the system over the years, but also that there’s nothing inherently wrong with either method. i just happen to use my bullet journal a lot differently than how ryder described in his video.
New subscriber here (hey!) I know this is an older video, but I wanted to jump in here and add it to the comments. I lie between the maximalist and the minimalist bullet journal spectrum. Function over form 100%, but I love to have stickers and my own pages. That is one place where I will jump in and add my viewpoint... the issue with a pre-printed planner that truly takes away from a system is, even if you are 100% on par with Ryder's method, the availability of "the next blank page." Ryder has made a lot of updates to his system since his original video and even his book. I am not sure if you keep up with him there, but he is very much pro collections, trackers, etc., as long as they are adding to what works and not for the sake of collections. He is very much about intentionality as the entire focus on the system. Is it about productivity? Sure, but it is mostly about bringing intentionality to doing what is necessary. I am returning to the bujo after using a pre-printed planner for over 2 years (Hobonichi Cousin), and the convenience of having a pre-printed planner is a definite bonus (index, monthly, weekly, daily). I am going to school full time, working full time, and I'm a mom and a wife (you get the idea, haha), so the pre-printed planner would be the answer. It worked... until it didn't. The pre-printed planner's limitations reside to someone who needs "the next blank page". There are none. The restriction lies in the pre-printed pages. This is why I am back in Bujo. I absolutely love the freedom of having an open page when I need it. With school and work, I definitely do. Sometimes, I need a page outside of my daily log to write things (a collection), and the freedom is 100% perfection. As I said, I am somewhere in the middle of the spectrum of highly decorated and artsy to a strict one pen and a blank page type. I love my stickers, the calendar grid for my monthly, and I tend to use a page a day, much like the Hobonichi, where I have a time ladder to put in events and such. But I love to watch creators like you with such incredible talent (I also learned from Amandarachlee and Boho Berry from back in the day). Keep creating! I love it!
Definitely on your side 🤎 I really think if I had to follow the original method I might as well use the notes and reminder app in my phone so I really feel the original method is not of much use now..I mean using apps will make this process so much more time efficient but I really just like you said find this to be creative outlet and for memory keeping..I love to see my whole year with goods and bads in a notebook so I definitely am on your side 🤎🤎✨

yess i feel like we're very similar and i agree w you on the artsy stuff being the bonus of bullet journaling :)
I love that you made this because I ran from bullet journaling after getting so overwhelmed with the decorations but seeing how many people do it differently is so cool. Reminds me what interested me in the first place (the customization)
yes of course! the personalization is my fav part :)

that’s a valid point. even if he doesn’t use art himself it doesn’t mean he doesn’t think others can in their own journals :)
What I like about Ryder’s method is that is simple, I don’t get anxious or stress thinking about decorations and draws, I love to watch videos of people drawing but personally I don’t do it, and the thing that I most love is that If I don’t use the bullet journal one day or more there is not going to be blank pages, I get what you say about the method is the same than buying a planner because some how it is but at least for me I don’t have to worry about the pages I don’t use, many times I stopped using them because I didn’t use some pages and I was like, why I’m buying if have is empty because I didn’t need or forgot to use it.

that’s a good point actually the skipped pages in a planner may be a little anxiety inducing :/ either way glad you found a system that works for you!

i love that! and yea the holiday season seems to be where i get really inspired to journal as well :)

so interesting! yea the art does take a long time haha but i’m glad you found a system that works for you :)
I’m still looking into the bullet system 😊❤thank you for sharing

oh that’s cool that you have two journals! i didn’t know that ryder has adhd but i can see why the system would work really well for him then. :)
Thanks for the video. I love how honest you are being😊
absolutely!
I love your thoughts about the bullet journal method! I guess I'm something in between, I use the simple monthly overview and the bullet system (but x means that I haven't done the task). super cool! :)
fantastic video, such a good thorough review, loved it ❤❤❤
Thank you so much!
12:51 who said that he msjes the same spreads without adding something bee? He's adding a lot in there, like trackers and projects, and journaling
maybe he's updated his system since his original video was posted, but i'm just going off of what he described in his video :).
Hi! Another intresting video!🧡Ty
thank youu
P. S. I have my sketchbook for my creative stuff. I prefer my planber to be straight to the point with no drawings
i love that! a little bit of both :)
I feel like it's just kind of apples and oranges? The original method was very clearly and loudly pure productivity
that’s valid yeah and then from that method many people have tweaked the system and added different aspects over the years :)
♥️👍

that’s a good point, a lot of his method can be transitioned into digital! :)
