This is a run I've been meaning to make a video on for a while, so I'm glad that all it took for me to get around to it was Resident Evil 4 Remake coming out in a couple months! Speaking of remakes, isn't Dead Space out in like a week? The Novistador in the room on the way back to the broken butterfly is only there in the GameCube version of the game normally. When it was ported to other PS2 it was removed for some reason, along with a bunch of other stuff, and that version is what all later ports were based on. The RE4 HD Mod pack adds it back in because it was trying to mimic the original GameCube release as much as possible.

Actually, the 2007 PC Port was based on the PS2. The Wii Edition port was based on GameCube's (though the added content itself was based on PS2). The Xbox 360 and PS3 Ports were both based on Wii Edition's. Every other port after that was all based on the 360 edition since, including the Steam UHD 2014 version.

Like you said Ashley really isn't that bad at all. In fact I think Ashley is the single best escort mission in any video game ever. She does her best to avoid getting in your way, she follows you pretty closely and doesn't run into danger, she can be locked in a dumpster wherever applicable until the fighting is done so she doesn't distract you, and when you get the armor for her it's just hilarious watching enemies constantly drop her because she's too heavy. Honestly I think it's fun to have a few sections where you have to escort her just to mix things up every now and then so things don't get stale.
Funny story when i was young I played RE4 the first time through without realizing you could sell stuff, combine herbs or upgrade weapons. I had never played a survival horror or RE game and just didn't get the mechanics. I just assumed that was how hard the game was actually supposed to be lol, it kicked my ass for months but was so satisfying when I finally beat it and it instantly became an all time fave game of mine. Then I came back years later as an adult and played the game utilizing upgrades and all the mechanics and was like holy shit this is so much easier I'm so OP lolll . I just find it funny I unknowingly did a super hard challenge run on my first ever run of the game

The fact I loved about the remake when I saw the demo gameplay is that Leon already started using Jiu Jitsu throws against normal enemies unlike he used to perform what is called "ipon seoi nage" against Krauser exclusively as he does here 21:44

Those Novistadores appeares 'cause you have installed the HD Project mod on your copy of RE4 for PC.
For some reason, looks like the devs intended for that room to contain those enemies, but the flag for them was left unchecked (intentionally?). HD Project just "restored" them too.
They despawn after freeing Ashley.
That's why I never saw him as a kid.. I always waited to go in that room till I had Ashley again (was on GameCube)
The No Merchant run category is nothing new to this game, I've actually done it back then on the Gamecube when the game was still new. Definitely the greatest experience you could have with this game, it really turns it into survival horror.

You could alternatively blow the leg off of the regenerator, and then as fast as you can proceed to immediately use the knife on it. Works for the iron maiden too.
My favorite re4 cheese is the quick time event Krauser fight. The qte's only have 2 button possibilities and doesn't punish you for hitting all of them. So just mash all 4 buttons and you will never fail another one
They actually added a trophy for RE4 remake without even interacting with the merchant

Instant like and subscribe once I heard your opinion on Ashley. She’s no where near as bad as people make her out to be. Yes the screams can get old fast, but overall she behaves really well for a character you have to escort and defend. Also I too had never seen the cutscene with the pack of plaga dogs until this year and I’ve been playing RE4 since it came out. I’m obsessed with games that still allow you to discover things even after a million playthroughs.

Did you check out the HD pack's secret room? Not in this run, of course, since you went right at the cabin lever. I thought it was really cool when I found it.
Also, agree on the Red9, love using that one. I always plan on trying out the punisher, but never really get around to it. Apparently the basic handgun's max upgrade also increases the knife's critical rate, so it can be pretty handy, too (not in a no merchant run, I mean, just casually.) Here's hoping the remake turns out alright.
I have seen it, it's a really neat addition! Honestly thought of including it in the video, but it'll make a nice little find for anyone who decides to play the HD mod :)

Considering how easily you could cheese enemies in the original, I love how the people at Capcom are 100% aware of most of them and punish plays for using them, especially Salazar which is extremely fun in the Remake but also terrifying as he still can insta-kill you and he moves are A LOT.
The U-3 boss fight is something that I both miss yet am glad was not in the Remake.
I did a knife only run back on PS2. It was fun. Had made 48 runs in normal, and 23 in professional.

hey ! so in the two giante room, you can drop one into the lava pit and then you do a rinse and repeat of climbing up the ladder, jumping down just before he goes into the animation to shake it, and then knifing his leg 3-5 times before doing it again ! that way you use no bullets whatsoever, but it does take about 10 minutes :)

Im like a year late to this vid but i man the memories i got from ur intro talking about the intro on the gamecube, i was 7 when i played re4 on the gamecube for the first time and i was hella scared but i wasnt gonna tell my mom lol.

I remember doing this on the GameCube but never could do enough damage to the truck to keep it from wrecking into me when Ash was driving that bulldozer. I even used the broken butterfly with that Free RPG from the castle.
I have (mostly) beaten Professional with knife and throwables before. Most of the strats used here is exactly like mine. Only some part that I can't figure out how to pass without a gun like the salazar (still knife until he opens his cocoon tho, and then rpg his face). Other than that, I think the only two times I need a gun is waterwheel boxes and protecting ashely from the balcony which I think it's somewhat doable with grenades.

You can actually get through the double gigante fight knife only. Firstly drop one of the gigante down the lava pit and wait for it to close by running around, then climb up the ladder and wait for the gigante to grab the ladder and begin the animation to make leon fall off the zipline area, the instant you see the animation jump down the ladder and knife him a couple of times in the leg till his animation is nearly done, then climb up the ladder and rinse and repeat till he's dead
Damn the remake is gonna have some shoes to fill

When I played RE4, the truck part got me thinking the same, especially in the end when you blast through the wall. I played it in 2022
For the village section with the shotgun you can go to the same house you held up in but do a better strat to conserve ammo. Shoot a hole in the door get right up against it and knife enamies through the door. You shouldn't get hit unless a stray enamy throws there weapon

I finished my pro playthrough no merchants not to long ago. I swear that the enemies near the end were learning from me, and started using my strats against me. (things like camping the ladders to hit me as i come up)
Edit: My biggest tip to anyone trying this challenge, one save as many flash bangs, and regular grenades as you possibly can (without sacrificing ammo). Two Salazar is a bitch if you stand in the right spot, three always use the rocket launcher on the Verdugo (just to be a dick). Four krauser is a bitch to knives, and five ain't nothin wrong with using the nike strats, a strategic retreat is a valid strategy.
Edit 2: At the boss fork, i killed both el thicc boi, and the bella sisters. Just because at that time i wanted to fight every boss in the game for my run. I gave that up when i got to the Los Dos Thicc Bois, and eventually gave one a lava bath.

This is funny for me bc when I was a kid I had accidentally killed the merchant at one point and either didn’t know how to reload a checkpoint or he was already dead after the checkpoint, I can’t remember lol. But I only thought there is only one merchant so with killing him I thought he wouldn’t show up for the rest of the game so I just quit playing it 😅

Finished my first no merchant on pro run a few days ago. My strategy was to not grab the shotgun so that I not only could hoard a bunch of handgun ammo, but also grab the rpg for the Salazar fight. As for the U3 I simply knifed him in phase one and then spammed a bunch of incendiary nades to finish him off. No Mag rounds wasted.
Finished the game with a few full heals, about 17 magnum ammo and maybe 47 handgun ammo left in my inventory. Took me 9hrs and 38 minutes and all I can say is the wrecking ball room was easily the hardest part in the run, to the point where I had to use the empty weapon glitch.
You can kill both Garradors with the rocket if you shoot the door behind em. It catches both plagas on their backs.
Considering ive only played the vr version of re4 i didnt know shooting the water did this.... so glad i didnt get trolled into shooting the water lol i would have scream and got mad at who made me shoot the water

Now.. Regenerators. Oh our favorite fellas.
Here's what you do: shot gun to the leg. Big fella falls over. Run behind him fast and knife him and until his ass explodes. As long as you keep knifing, he cannot get up or move. Takes about a minute to kill him but it is knife only and when you get good at it, you take no damage.
For the first el gigante fight, stock up on 3 grenades (first grenade is carried by the crow in the first area sitting on the danger sign, second grenade is in the water where all the trip mines are after the second qte boulder, last grenade is in a bird nest just outside of the little shack that leads to the church after meeting the second merchant). As soon as the fight starts, run to the first fire on the right while hugging the wall. Turn around and throw 2 grenades at his feet and that will make the giant parasite exit its body. Run straight up to him and stand right beside him, throw your last grenade high up at the wall next to him so that it will bounce off the wall and explode right on the parasite. Instant kill every time. Takes about 5 to 6 seconds to kill him with a bit of practice.

This game is great and certainly one of the best in the series but after 100%-ing it I will never put myself through the pain of professional again! Or go near that horrific fucking shooting gallery. I have no doubt lost years of my life from the stress 😂
That 2nd el gigante furstrated me so much because i dumped so many bullets into him i just ended up knifing him which was the thing that actually managed to kill him

There's a custom run that I like to do that find really challenging and fun
-can Only buy one weapon per chapter if available
-No selling treasure on the black market because Indi says they belong in a museum (that's about 750k lost)
-the shotgun is locked until ch.2 and cannot be upgraded as it a rusty piece of junk
-lose weapons after ch 1 (including shotgun)
-Get only bolt action rifle from merchant on chapter 2
-shoot medallions and sell punisher to buy red9 as the true reward
-Get the TMP after you enter the castle
-get the riot shotgun after you meet Ada
-Get the the grenade launcher where the RPG is
-the broken butterfly is just that... Broken, so you only get the 6 shots then sell it as a collectors piece antique
-shooting galeries are how you increase the size of your attache case and get the killer7
I think that's everything...
Not being able to sell treasure means you have to really scrounge for money for those upgrades.
Also... You can KNIFE the U3... It tricky but totally doable

Short answer : yes. But it’s fucking hard. You can get broken butterfly from the castle and just rock with the shotgun and pistol. Most enemies you can just run by or stagger.

hey so to explain buggy wuggy in the castle side room. there is a AI director that basically controls what is where and if u havent died for a long period of time or haven taken damage in a long time usually enemys will have more frequent spawns or the game will just pop a random enemy in a loot spot. ur welcome for the explanation
Beat the game 2 years back with no merchant, only pistol, can’t use eggs until the final boss as well as must pick up any that you see. Lastly you have to pick up a big fish when you can. The inventory management is soooo hard but possible

Funny thing about the double Gigante fight. A friend of mine was playing the game and all he did was take the zipline twice before the fight started and he was able to clip through the wall and walk up to the exit.

I have to say without the added challenges you put, the hardest achievement in resident evil in my opinion is the cqc for the win achievement from the resident evil remake( cqc for the win requires you to beat the whole game with just the knife. No guns or defensive items allowed)
