Ak, šis gads ir zaķa gads! The huge quake and tsunami that destroyed much of Japan's east coast was in the year of the rabbit... meaning already 12 years have passed! Time flies....
I watched the Zaķīšu Pirtiņa... I felt like is was more a piece of artwork than a children's cartoon. Very beautiful. My take on it is that in the end we see all the different animals sleeping peacefully in the winter night. It's a dark-looking like the lo-o-o-ng Latvian winter nights... the little bunny feels safe even though it is dark outside and he knows all the other animals are sleeping peacefully just like he is. Nu viss!

I'm not a patron (yet), but - referring to your creative crisis - and coming with little help: maybe an episode about Latvian (not always) popular music? For example, in Poland, most people know the song "Maybe" by Brainstorm, but few people know that in Latvia this band is Prata Vetra, and I'm sure that there are certainly more interesting discoveries - pop, rock, jazz ... I think this could be a nice episode, full of new words 🙂 Paldies! 🙂

All the idioms you’ve shared are so colorful; in terms of resources, it’s not fair that Latvian isn’t easier to learn! I’m so glad for these videos.

Started crying when you explained the ending of the Zaķīšu pirtiņa. I also cried during this scene.

Glad you are back. We have been talking about you in our Latvian learning groups. How delightful these videos are! I watched the Zaķišu pirtiņa, and I wonder if the horse flying symbolizes something? It does feel dark at the end. But for a true Tumša zaķa experience: Watership Down.

Missed you and your great sense of humor.
Our son was born on the year of the rabbit, and grew up loving his "Lapin."
    Love the idioms!

5:41 - I would not say it' s scary, more like a bit sad, because it's composed by Imants kalniņš, and he just has that vibe and also loves somewhat complicated melodies.
P.S. A melody that _always_ makes me cry is "Kingdom Hearts" OST. It's beautiful, but... It just reminds me of lost love, I guess, something that could have been there, but was not.

It's made gloomy and sad by design, central committee of Soviet Union and its Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic subbranch design that is. Just like the Kaķīša Dzirnavas, although released in 1993, still full of Soviet propaganda - lending money ->bad, not giving it back -> good.

"Zaķis" is the wild animal "hare", and it is not kept as a domestic animal. The animal kept at home is "trusis" the rabbit. "Trusis" normally doesn't live in the wild in Latvia, although it does in other countries. Those really are two different animals :)

"Rabbit" is the default English word for a long-eared cute animal, whereas "zaķis" is typical for Latvians, even though they are different genera. "Bunny" however is not specific, and could be either rabbit or hare. There is no equivalent in Latvian.

Exactly. "Trusis" is most likely a Belarusian loanword "трус". In Kashubian, rabbit is also "trus".
