This is part four of our "Makers of the Modern World" series. In this video, I finish the discussion on Theodor Adorno and then explore some of the major themes of the writings of Herbert Marcuse in the development of Critical Theory.
Thank you so much for covering this kind of intellectual poison, we need more people like you and James Lindsay who understand what's going on.
I am really in need of a critic of Foucault! And looking forward for Derrida one (art theory student here).
This series is amazing. Thanks a lot!
An important part that you have missed in your lecture, which was nonetheless still very insightful, was the influence Heidegger had on Marcuse and especially Heidegger's critique of modernity given in question concerning technology. In his book the one-dimensional-man Marcuse copies Heidegger's critique, written in a les difficult language, to explain that capitalism makes everything a commodity.
I got a disney plus ad right after you said Disney was the most dangerous American.
Excellent content. And yes unfortunately in today culture it is a junkyard.. I much prefer to watch vintage black and white films and listening to music from 20s until the 1950s.. And I love early Christian art work. And of course classics music
As always another presentation excellently done God bless you brother ✝️
I am overwhelmed and greatly indebted to you how you just simplified everything.
Please make a video on Marcuse's The Affirmative Character of Culture
The class-consiousness issue is I think most insidiously seen today in Black Americans who aren't pro-BLM being seen as "racially black" but not "politcally black."
Or Biden tying having a particular political beliefs with being Black.
Great report, thank you for your thoughts on Marcuse.
There is lots of nonsense in the social and online media... either extremely biased with an agenda or very superficial; people reciting things what they read, without having understood what they mean. One detects easily after watching for a couple of minutes. This is the third video I have watched in that channel. This is one of the best concise summary on contemporary thinkers, so to say. Very to the point, and clear. I must say that I am surprised when seeing that you are a pastor. I am not a religious person, but deeply informed and experienced in a certain way. Neither pro-Marx nor pro-Paul (I sometimes think that they are the same person-with a two millennium difference : )) ) Anyway... I hope you get more listeners. We need clear and educated thinkers with a humane side to save our nose from the post-modern mud we mired into.
Thank you for this series.
The videos seem to be coming out later and later, luckily, I was looking for something to watch!
Been researching all of this for a few years. In order to fully understand it all you're consciousness does have to be raised. Meaning you understand how they think and what their objectives are. It's wild watching people express the ideology without understanding that they've been indoctrinated into it. But understanding it does induce confidence in the possibility of confronting it. I.d fall under the "woke dissident" category outlined by pseudonymous author Charles Pincourt in the book Counter Wokecraft. Pretty wild watching all of these thinkers ideas play out, again... but this time with a vengeance. The repressive tolerance is almost totaling. Scary stuff. Awesome series!!
Hello Dr. Cooper. Excellent lecture. Can you tell me where you discovered that Adorno had originally called the culture industry “mass media”? That is a fascinating detail.
It's from his book Dialectic of Enlightenment. I believe he used "mass-medium" which is now referred to as "mass-media".
@@thomasc9036 Thanks Thomas. I've read DoE but I don't recall this. Do you remember where this is taken from?
This is so instructive to me. Before, I had mainly an intuitive rejection of what I could see coming out of the academy because I wasn’t familiar with who the gurus of Critical Theory and Cultural Marxism were and what they taught. It occurs to me that the great corrective to all of this has to come from within the Mother of Western Civilization itself: the Church. The Academy is lost. We are looking for Christian intellectuals to do this. Dr. Cooper, we are looking at you! Consider it a Divine Call.
Thank you for doing these lectures with an intelligent Christian response. I am Christian reformed myself. Critical Theory was the reason why I never pursued a Phd in English.
I quite like the Frankfurt School ideas (im guessing we differ in that way), thanks for the video :)
Povert Peddler 😉
Nice. It's sad that many people who like Philosophy are obsessed with Sartre and Nietzsche. Made me dislike Philosophy for a while
Augustine loved philosophy. In fact, most Church Fathers and great theologians relied on Greek philosophical teachings. I think you are referring to the modern philosophy that promotes self and reason to understand the world. The ancient philosophy believed in external/metaphysical truths instead of self.
Great series! In light of this, could you do videos covering the origins and variants of liberation theology? I ask because I've seen many peers, clergy, and parishes leave the conservative Anglican circles that I've been in to advocate for this kind of theology. Although advocacy for the oppressed is certainly commanded and commended by Christ and God's Word, so many people conflate this biblical advocacy for the Marxist-tinged liberation theology, and more often than not, it leads them down the path away from orthodoxy into heresy.
I also think a series on the origins of Christian Nationalism (ex. the National Conservatism that we've seen advocated here in the states and the rise of purported Nationalists like Orban in Hungary and now Meloni in Italy) would be great. So many faithful Christians are getting deceived by these harmful ideologies because they look so attractive in the moral values and shared cultural heritage that is being advocated. Yet, it almost always comes with racism, dehumanization, and the unrighteous conflation of God's Kingdom with an earthly one.
Great second half, Doctor. I'm sure you've already thought of it, but a video on the Birmingham School would prove very beneficial if you wanted to continue the discourse on modern Marxism.
Thanks, seems like an overall pretty honest review of their general ideas.
Some things stood out. The liberal bourgeois revolutions as well as the Lutheran's, and even the original Christians themselves were radicals, and sought to change things in totality. They all succeeded, more or less. So, being radical isn't necessarily something wrong or fundamentally flawed; that criticism itself of radicalism has its own origins in those revolutions. Are the Amish not radicals? Did they not seize their own means of production and culture?
Another thing I want to point out, something I don't think the critical theorists forsaw, was the general proletarianization that has come about with the internet. For better and worse. The only thing worse than having academics knowing things and trying to influence society for the better, is ignorant masses undermining society. Whether that's a violent drug addled music star or otherwise unemployed political influencers calling for violent revolution to arbitrarily overthrow the systems that have been established (except the hierarchical capitalism).
Then as far as western society or culture is concerned, socialist traditions and Marxism are themselves part of western culture. And having criticism for the parts of it that are bad, there's nothing inherently wrong with that. If the local scrooges are in passive control of the lives of everyone around them in the lower classes, there's nothing inherently wrong with eating that dynamic to shift towards something better. There were even elements of this in Christianity, though arguably, especially in the US, Christianity itself has largely been subsumed by these dynamics related to capitalist exploitation and class.
This is a very insightful lecture. Perhaps you van also engage the work of Dr James Lindsay, he has been digging into the original sources of Critical Theory and how it's manifesting in the controversial issues of the day.
Hmm. How does Marcuse and his "completely different humanity" fit in with the humanist technocrats and their desire to merge humanity with computers and technology?
21:26 Adorno's criticism of media is accurate but the conclusions he arrive at is lunacy. So, is this more a case of a broken clock being right twice a day
Please do a video on art.
It would be cool if you could engage with Biblical Critical Theory (Watkins) at some point!
paulo freire’s pedagogy of the oppressed would be a good definition of critical theory…
Let's talk here instead. Hopefully you'll take my courtesy and be amicable.
I agree.
Same with Franz Fanon, who Freire largely drew from. I think Fanon is much more dangerous and less read these days. But his influence has permeated everywhere.
Glad we listen to a lot of the same channels
@@Verulam1626 Freire is my education hero :)
and I appear amicable now not because you agree with me... I turn unamicable when good faith is absent from a discourse... I have been in the kitchen long enough to be able to take the heat... I don't expect others to agree with me...
@@nelsonang are you aware of any extent his ideas have been appropriated for things like critical pedagogy and critical race theory in education?
His ideas are good. But those who interpret and apply them are very different.
Wow. I think almost 90% of my beefs with leftism is just Marcuse.
Yeah, his influence on our society is vast and unknown by the masses.
Are you going to speak to why Marxism and Critical Theory (and its derivatives) are wrong?
Did you watch his other videos? It begins with their rejection of classical metaphysics.
@@tylerkroenke7804 Yes, I was hoping for a more in-depth analysis, especially from a Christian perspective.
We look back on the working conditions of the early industrial revolution through the wrong end of the telescope. To say negative things about child labor, lack of safe working conditions, etc., is easy to do looking back from today. But consider the situation looking forward - from when life on the family farm approached regular bouts of starvation and deprivation; the conditions those children lived and worked in when on the farm or in the slums or dumped in orphanages.
We cannot compare the early industrial revolution to today. Just as is the case for many of the so-called social injustices in the past, we look through the wrong end of the telescope.
We always possessed enough of a counterbalance (barely at times) for countering the effects of Marxist activism. Because of Marcuse, assisted by Soviet and CCP goals of general disruption, the poison of the lie of a Socialist Utopia has succeeded and CRT arose as the Final Solution. However, Marx was correct that The Revolution never ends, so utopia will always be elusive and the blame will be placed on the next group most available.
Marcuse had no insights. Insulting factory workers and fun movies isn't galaxy-brained.
All Critical Theory achieves is the recognition that when raised by 'the ignoramus', unsurprisingly one adopts their mannerisms. Being raised in a Christian culture just means one doesn't have to be a Christian to think like one.
Scientific Socialism = Make Belief Science Socialism.
I know you know this, Sir, but not all of the working class liked the media brainwash. I stopped watching TV in the 80s. I read all the classics I could get my hands on then got my GED moved onto some collage. I get most of my education reading philosophy, science, and history of the people and otherwise. I am still quite a bad writer so I apologize for that, but I did want you to know that we are here and we hate superman. No one is going come save us like a super hero and we must do it ourselves. There are a lot of people down here that are sick and tired. Very tired. I do not believe in god due to the many arguments against the likelihood of a being like that existing in this universe.
When you say conservatives promoted minimum wages and anti child labor laws...well...you are REALLY being ahistorical.
Marcuse:"Capitalism commodifies people!!!"
