I have solid very-basic skills and not very many intermediate skills. Please keep being clear! This is amazing! I subscribed to learn from you because you're an awesome teacher! Thank you so, so much!!
I never leave comments but honestly, this video series is awesome! So helpful! Thank you for taking the time to teach it-- can't wait to make one like this!
Oh my goodness, I wanted to do a mitered square blanket by Purl Soho and I found a video in Dutch, but I couldn’t understand the technique, plus no other tutorial was showing how to demonstrate it the way it was shown! It was always on an even number of stitches with 4 decreased in all, so thank you very much!
I absolutely love this pattern I am doing one using mandala yarn cakes and a white in baby weight just cause it's what I had on hand you did very well explaining yourself and the process used to accomplish this so glad I found this video series
Oh thank you. I'm taking notes (since I like to work from written patterns rather than videos). I'm glad you included how to do the mitered squares because I've never done one before. I'm SO excited to finally get started on one of these.
Oh yeah, that would be great. I know a lot of people learn best from videos but I learn best from reading. It is great that you are willing to do that. I know you are busy. I really enjoy learning new knitting techniques.
I just found this series! I am a new knitter and I can't wait to try this. I never would have thought to put the color in between the blocks I love the look! Thanks. I hope you have finished your blanket.
I have been buying sock yarn to make a mite red square blanket for about 6 mos. I have liked at other pod casts and finally found yours and had an "ah-ha" moment because your video and explanations helped me to now finally begin my blanket. I love the "edge" you did and the black border around each metered square. Thank you so much. I am going to begin and do a few base squares and then proceed to your next blanket tutorial. Happy holidays😍😍😍Ellen
Oh my goodness I'm so glad you like it! I was afraid I would be the only one (but hey, it would be at my house, right? :P). I hope they're helpful! Let me know if you have any questions!
Thanks ever so much. I was trying to figure this out at lunch-time today and then found you. I like that you do 49 stitches as I am a really tight knitter too. Just perfect for me.
thankyou so very much. i wanted to learn how to do one of these. i love the way your squares turn out. plus love the way you knit. thank you from kelly davis from michigan
Oh I'm so glad it's helpful! Step two will be up in a few weeks! In the mean time, you need tons of base squares (as many as you want your blanket wide!), so keep chugging away!
Thank you for a great video and a beautiful pattern that brings back great memories of crazy quilts. Please note that you're actually decreasing TWO stitches in the middle, not three stitches as you said on the first row. (-:

Thanks for the great tutorial! I’m getting ready to start my blanket. I’ve never done a mitered square, and I LOVE the black border!! The name of the center decrease is a CDD Central Double Decrease....you are decreasing 2 stitches, keeping the center stitch on top. I see it a lot in lace. It can be done on purl side, but it is really a pain!!! Thanks again for just what I needed to get started!! Cheers!!
15:35 what did you mean by “so you don’t actually have to put your yarn in front this time; you just purl the stitch”? Since we slipped 1 as if to purl, the yarn is already in front… is that what you’re saying?
Perhaps an odd question, mathematics is not my strong point. After you knit the first row with 23 sts on each side when you turn the fabric on the wrong side do you purl the 23 st or the 22 st ?
I fine this fascinating.,.. Its a piece of art., how one little square., turns out to something beautiful.... ☺😁😍😀😊 just started my first square... Thank You For The Video... Happy Knitting., 😁😍😀😊👍👍
Hey Meena, the technique to create the centre diagonal ridge is called a Central Double Decrease (CDD). This is where the THREE centre stitches are used to do this, however, only TWO stitches are actually decreased. If you listen to her stitch count during the video, you will notice she has only decreased ONE stitch each side of the centre ridge. Thus her total stitch count is only TWO less than the previous row. It is indeed very easy to do and adds a lovely detail to the square!
Thanks for the comment, Demmi! And Meena, Demmi is absolutely right! I think I misspoke in one of the videos? But this is the right info. Sorry I haven't been around lately to respond, but I appreciate you jumping in, Demmi, and I'm glad you like it, Meena!
I want to knit this for a baby blanket about 28.5" by 40" using needle US 10 and yarn Lion Landscapes. Do I still cast on 49 stitch as on the video> Thanks
I want to knit this for a baby blanket about 28.5 “ by 40” and using US size 10 lion landscapes. Do Still cast on the same number of stitches as you do on the video?
I know! Someone else mentioned that to me - I misspoke in this video. I'm knitting through the back loop to twist the stitch so it's oriented flat along the edge.
What size needles did you use? Are you looking for a firm fabric, or loose and squishy? Also, I tried to find you on Instagram, but there are quite a few with the same basic name. Can you spell it out here?
How can I slow down the video please so I can see how you end the first row of the first base square, I have watched it 12 times and it's too fast to see how you do it
I'm not sure what you're asking. Every row, whether it's a right side or wrong side row, begins with a "Slip as if to purl, with yarn in front, move yarn to back" and ends with a "knit through the back loop." The purpose of this is to make the stitches that are easily picked up on the sides, and to make them lay flat. Without the ktbl and s aitp, the stitches would be all twisted and much more difficult to pick up from.
Here is the thing I do not understand. When I try to do a mitered square this way I am only decreasing on one side. I am certain it is simple but it boggles my mind. I want to do it but I can't figure it out. I can do the square inwhich you decrees on one side knit the middle stitch then decrease next two stitches.
Hmm. When you say you're only decreasing on one side, do you mean that it becomes lopsided, and only one half of the square "mitres," or do you mean only on the right side and not the wrong side?
Hey! I love your pattern and the detail in your videos. I have one problem when I knit the squares myself: they are all warped, as if the mittered diagonal line was too long for the square to sit flat. Does anyone know what I should do about it?
So, if you're not making the center ridge garter, it can "stretch it out," if you will. I've found that it works itself out as you pick up more squares on the sides, but you can also skip that purl stitch on the wrong-side rows and just make the whole thing garter.
Sofia Panziera my reply is late. you are supposed to start your decrease 1 stitch before the middle stitch. so if you cast on 29 stitches row 1 would be row1-knit 13-slip 2-knit 1-psso 2-knit 13 row2- knit 13-purl 1-knit 13 row 3-knit 12-(start decrease 1 stitch before the middle knit stitch) slip 2(this includes the middle stitch, knit 1- then psso2) knit 12 hope this helps.
HI Lily: I have all my mitered squares made, and am wondering if you can show how to join them like you did with your black boarder but with out adding more squares but using the ones I have already made.
Oh I don't know if that's possible. Could you send me a picture? You can e-mail me (ladybuglaboratory at gmail dot com) or send me a rav message (ladybuglily).
I don't understand how it ends up being a square because she's always decreasing.. shouldn't it end up as a triangle then?? Can someone explain this to me please, I'm confused :)
Sure! If I were decreasing on the edges, I would be making a triangle, but since I'm decreasing in the center, I'm basically "folding" the knitting into a square. You'll notice how the original cast-on edge (which was straight) bends in the middle by the end? That's because I'm decreasing in the center, pulling the two edges closer to each other. So as those two edges come to a point at the top, the bottom cast-on edge folds in the middle, making it a square, not a triangle. Try it! It's actually a little bit magical to see it happen for the first time. If you want to do a sample, just cast on 21 stitches, and on your first row, work 9 before you CDD. It works, I promise!
Just use whatever needle feels comfortable for you! As long as you use the same size needles and yarn for every square, then it will all even out, it will just change how big each square is. If you want to do squares in different yarn sizes, if your yarn is bigger than usual, go down a needle size or two, and if your yarn is smaller than your usual squares, go up a needle size or two. Hope this helps!
Hi, I'm working on my very first mitred square blanket and i am loving your video. i was wondering if i wanted to work this in a stockinette stitch would i just purl alternative rows? Would it effect the squares at all? Thanks 😊
Hi, I've never done one of these squares before. Do the base squares have to be connected? Or is that going to be part of the second video? (I thought we had to pick up sts to add on the squares.) Thx!
That's part of the next video! I do mine a little differently than most people, so that's why I start with disconnected squares. The next one is up, by the way! :)
What is the length of the cord you are using? (I have interchangeables). Most patterns I have see are done on dpn's.. Just wondering how long of a circular needle we would need.
I sometimes you DPNs, and I sometimes use 12" circulars. I like the circulars because I can never lose the second DPN, but interchangeables don't really work well for that.
Ladybug Laboratory Thank you for your reply. I have 4” interchangeable needles, but the smallest cable I can get is 8”, I think. So, that would end up to be too long I suppose (16”). I might stick with dpn’s, less of a fuss.
Thank you so much for your tutorials. I am a fairly new knitter, and want to make a blanket with my leftover sock yarn. Your videos show me how to make this popular pattern, as I have never done a mitred square. I do hope, when you have time, that you will make written instructions for this pattern. I would happily buy a printed pattern too - so I can carry my work away from the computer. Found you on Ravelry BTW
This is excellent, and I'm so looking forward to having enough scraps built up to try it myself! Quick question though: about how much yarn is needed per square?
Sandria Tyrrell Are you doing all of the decreases correctly? I imaging that missing one out would give you a kite shape and it's something that's easy to count wrong.
I'm not sure what you mean by "regular yarn," exactly, but you could use any size yarn for this, you'd just have different size squares. If you're not sure what size needles to use, look on the ball-band of the yarn - it will usually tell you. :)
It's supposed to be flat! If you don't like that look, then don't purl the center stitch on the wrong side - knit it! Then you'll end up with a complete garter square. :)
I haven't yet, but I'm planning to once all the videos are out. I don't want to do it yet, since I'm still figuring out how I'm doing all the parts of it myself! When I do, though, I'll put a link in all the video descriptions.
That would be helpful because I still am finding it difficult to understand where my center decrease actually is from the right to wrong side. I keep making leaning squares :)
That's right! That's why you use a central *double* decrease. That decreases one stitch on each side of the ridge in one stitch, and not on one side only.
I finally got it but would prefer to decrease on either side of the central stitch by working two stotches together. I Just made one and it looks great, however I will work one your way and compare them. Regards.

Slow it down.
You can do this yourself. Little cog at the top of the video?
I mean, the little cog.
Thanks for such a prompt reply! What's the purpose of knitting tbl of first stitch, if I slip the last stitch of each row as if to purl?
I'm not sure what you're asking.

How many stitches do you knit on row 3 before the decrease ?
First time was 23 then slip 2
So is the next decrease row knit 22 then slip 2?
I am wondering that, also, Guess I have to try it first and then see.
Whoops, just saw this! That's exactly right - each row it's one fewer stitch per side.

The easiest way to do this is to follow parts 1-3 to make 4 corners, and then seam them together.

This is excellent, and I'm so looking forward to having enough scraps built up to try it myself! Quick question though: about how much yarn is needed per square?
I use about 4g per square, but it depends on your gauge and size. If you used bigger needles or cast on more, you'd need more, and vice versa.
Thanks a lot 🎉❤🎉

There will be, soon. They're out with my testers right now.
i was wondering if you have to make individual squares when making all a solid color square with the black boarder?
I'm not sure exactly what you mean.
Hello could you explain it in french an all thé square?
Thank
I don't know French well enough, I'm so sorry!
U have not taught how u finish the blanket
I tried twice, but I don't get the center ridge in the middle. It's kind of flat. Any idea?
It's supposed to be flat! If you don't like that look, then don't purl the center stitch on the wrong side - knit it! Then you'll end up with a complete garter square. :)
Very nice
Thanks!
Very clear, thank you.

Have you by any chance done a written pattern?
I haven't yet, but I'm planning to once all the videos are out. I don't want to do it yet, since I'm still figuring out how I'm doing all the parts of it myself!
When I do, though, I'll put a link in all the video descriptions.
That would be helpful because I still am finding it difficult to understand where my center decrease actually is from the right to wrong side. I keep making leaning squares :)
SUPER, u voice so cool
This does not work. If you want a central ridge you have to decrease on both sides of the central stitch and not on one side only.
That's right! That's why you use a central *double* decrease. That decreases one stitch on each side of the ridge in one stitch, and not on one side only.
Yes but that is not what is shown in your tutorial. By the way I think your blanket looks is great.
I finally got it but would prefer to decrease on either side of the central stitch by working two stotches together. I Just made one and it looks great, however I will work one your way and compare them. Regards.
Ah, I see. Either works, of course, as long as the numbers stay the same! Do what makes you happy!
