I've been playing guitar and now bass for a while, and going over this simple stuff again seemed so easy, but it's amazing how much I've forgotten/never occurred to me... Cheers.
Great lesson. I've been using online tutorials for 7 plus months and this is one of the best simply because you tied the knot between what we typically listen to and how its constructed on the fret board with theory. Thanks!
I told a friend of mine the same thing many years ago, about playing above the 12th fret. I said to pretend the nut,(12th fret), was defective, and every time he wanted to play an open string up there, he had to hold it down, so it wouldn't pop off. He said it became a lot easier for him after that. Thanks for the video.
Just now found you! I worked thru the modes and after your lessons on this I have a greater understanding of the modes ... wow great lessons!! Thanks Rufus!
Great lesson. I have been playing for years but restudying now since I was away from playing for about 12 years. The call-response using different octaves is a great idea. I will use that. One thing I notices is in my playing, which is mostly blues and R&B, playing the same notes further down the neck gives the line a more relaxed feel even if the higher overtones are more pronounced. Playing up the next but on lower (heavier) string adds a bit of tension making the bass more "noticed". I did not hear this in your recording. Anyway great lesson and thanks for posting.
Good video, especially for the beginner. One of the reasons I usually play a 5 string bass lately is to play the same thing although higher up on the neck to get that thicker sound.
Playing the blues scale with the position of the upper and lower frets does produce a cool sound. I like to play this way for the song I'd Rather Goblind ...
I ve been teaching myself bass for a while now (i like to think ive gotten pretty good) but i learned a different blues scale. Very similar but the one i play goes across 4 strings and uses the 5th fret on E as the root.
I just started with a teacher today this is what he is teaching me and I was playing in minutes I love bass i,m 49yrs old if I can learn it anyone can awesome way to learn
Hey there Marquayn-glad you enjoyed the lesson! I have quite a lot of students who study with me via Skype now...Go to www.rufusphilpot.com for details if you are interested!
