  • I have been dealing with the direct vent gas insert fireplace leaking air sense I bought this house 3 years ago. I fixed my problem and believe this is probably the same problem everyone else is having.

Well done buddy! This is a common issues with these builders. They should be put in jail for the level of neglect they put in these houses. 😒

Thank you! If only this video was available 20 years ago when the house was built. The world needed this. I was always wondering why I could feel a draft

2 yr old house I have insulation stuffed in mine because the cold air pours in from the bottom where the controls are. I did notice when built red fire caulking but didn't pay attention to the pipe sealing or not . I would bet when I rip this out that it's just pushed on there. I figured because the double wall pipe that was the issue. Great video. Unfortunately our surround is stone so this unit will cost me thousands over the years in wasted energy. I plan on blocking off the hole in the house and disconnecting this unit.

After eight months, this was definitely the fix. Some people will say that it is a convection that happens through the back of the fireplace. I do agree that that happens but it is so slight that the cold air doesn't extend 5" past the bottom vent. We had 45mph wind gusts the other day with 35 degree temps and none of that air blew into my house through the fireplace like it did before. Now the windows are a different story. lol

I'm having this EXACT same issue with what I'm sure is probably the same fireplace. Throughout the years I've tried caulking underneath like you have, from the outside; I knew the issue was either with the fireplace or with the wall cavity. I have masonry all around my fireplace, and it looks like it is sealed in there pretty good, so I'm not sure how I'll ever address the problem outside of calling an "expert." This video really hit the nail on the head as far as the problem goes. I'm so glad this video exists.

Brother your video was exactly what I found after pulling out a 25 yr old insert that the builders installed. I buttoned it up like you did foam and all and worked great! Thanks for your efforts to capture your fix!

So happy to find this video!!! My fireplace is so cold! I can’t wait to get it fixed. I feel like I throw away so much money through my heating bill.

Awesome job on the video and very informative. Just bought a house and notice a super cold draft coming from direct vent fireplace; this video definitely helps me get a good idea that the builder took a cheap shortcut.

Thanks for this video. I bought a house and had it remodeled and had a direct vent fireplace installed (similar to yours). Stone masonry was then installed all around the fireplace essentially locking it in place. Well, that first winter it felt like an open window. That summer I took the outside cap off and put high temp caulk in, had to buy a new pipe and cap because the guy totally jacked up the install so it basically WAS an open window. Inside I cut access through the drywall and had to be a contortionist to insulate and great stuff everywhere I could. It’s 98% better but will never be airtight as it should have been from the start.

The nature of the thing is the "professionals" who charge an arm and a leg and do a shitty half ass job! Lots of dishonest people who have no pride on what they do and don't respect the customers.

We bought a previously owned home in a development. Our problem wasn’t a draft but air blowing in, enough to billow out a wool blanket taped to the front of the fireplace. When we had the roof replaced this summer, the roofer removed the shingled roof covering the outside chimney. My husband hung inside from the open top and saw that there wasn’t any insulation in some sections of the framing. He stapled insulation where needed and inside the roof. We just had 50 mile an hour winds in our area and didn’t have one single draft or one single banging. Hope this is a help to someone else.

Very much appreciated! I don't see that we will be able to fix the issue at the moment as it's ~ -35C, but definitely something to queue up in the spring.

Wow, at least you had building wrap. I have mine apart right now to redirect the vent, vertical routing, and I will take the time to fix all of my leaks. Also, I believe there is an insulation gasket, large fireproof square blanket, that goes around the vent pipe. One more thing, there are holes on the sides of the box for the gas pipes to enter. Make sure they are also sealed. Thanks for the video.

Thank you so much for the explanation. I have the exact same problem and was thinking of switching to electric fireplace. Now I know what’s going on and maybe it’s time to buy a new gas fireplace and make sure the contractor does a good job sealing the pipes.

I always hated my builder. He didn't insulate under it. But that didn't fix the issue of draft, just the floor building ice in winter. I have tile all around it, and taking it out will be a nightmare, but I can almost guarantee there's not even Tyvek behind mine.

Don't ya just love it when the builders save themselves $47 but cost the owner $500 if they hire someone to fix it?
